truly one of the best beers i have ever had that doesnt include barrels, bacteria cultures, and multiple years to make. its downright flawless, and its simple elegance yet robust flavor profile makes it an absolute champion in my book. this is the kind of beer i like to drink, and like to drink a lot of. a pale ale that doesnt bore, its wonderful. hazy yellow in color, whipped cream topping three inches high on top of my schooner. the nose on this shows citra hops, pungent and lemon forward. the rye malt is subtle in smell, i get maybe a bit of wheat in with the two row here. the taste shocks me for the color, it has some density and probably should look a bit more copper and dense than it does, impressive. furthermore, the flavors are genius. the citra hops are all on the finish, while the front end is peppered with spicy rye malt, but only just enough for this to be different. the other base malts keep it in line with what we expect from a pale ale. the hopping comes as a surprise too, not often are both grain and hops so bright in a beer at the same time, and that is part of the beauty here. sessionable as they come here for my palate. i could drink ten of these and be neither sloppy drunk or bored. the citrus profile of the hops finishes the beer clean, but its still got this lush creamy body that is refreshing and quenching and just addicting. i wish this was available out here all the time, and maybe it well be soon, but this is one of the best pale ales i have ever had, and deserves to be mentioned among the best examples of the style. its everything i could want in a session beer.

L: Hazy golden orange with some floaties. The head is huge, rocky, and creamy. Retention is excellent, and lacing is left in sheets.

S: Ripe mango, cantaloupe, papaya, pineapple, apricot. Very juicy and sweet with ripe fruits. The malt backbone is biscuity and lightly toasty.

T: Juicy, ripe tropical fruit. Tons of mango, papaya, apricot, yellow peach, cantaloupe, tangerine, and pineapple. The malt backbone is light biscuity and toasty, a solid backdrop that is well-balanced but not sweet. Near the finish you get just a tingle of black pepper and coriander notes from the rye. Finishes well-balanced, just a light kiss of orange and lemon peel, and is slightly dry.

F: Medium bodied, smooth and soft, moderately carbonated, flows well.

O: A fantastic and delicious rye pale, juicy and fruity and very dynamic with the use of rye. Highly recommended!

Appearance: Pours a cloudy honey color with a three finger head; nice streaks of lace are left behind

Smell: Very bright, with floral citrusy and spicy rye

Taste: The hops jump out bringing, lemon, grapefruit and papaya flavors; underneath, there is just a touch of bready flavor that grows in a spicy rye direction, after the swallow

Mouthfeel: Medium body with crisp, moderate carbonation

Overall: One of the most refreshing beers I have tasted; the flavors are bright and crisp

12 oz. can dated 01/16/17

Pours cloudy amber gold with a creamy white foam head. Smells like spicy rye, melons, papaya, mango, orange citrus, grapefruit, with dank floral earthy herbal grassy resinous pine. Tastes like melons, papaya, mango, spicy rye, orange citrus, grapefruit, with dank floral earthy herbal grassy resinous pine. Feels medium bodied, creamy and smooth with low carbonation. Overall a really nice rye pale ale.

Poured from 12oz can into a pint glass.

Appearance: light golden hue with a light haze and a moderate effervescence. Head pours a thick finger of frothy ivory foam.

Smell: the glorious aroma wafted to my nose directly the can was opened. Big, fruity notes; citrusy grapefruit and even orange; tropical tangerine and mango; and a bit of resiny pine thrown in for good measure. I can absolutely get behind this.

Taste: piney flavors at first, then developing into grapefruit and tangerine. The rye is kind of hidden under all of the hops, but in general it's an amazing damn beer.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good carbonation and a nice creaminess for the style.

Overall: this is absolutely one of the best beers I've had this year. It really checks all the boxes for hop-forward beers that I like. Westbrook, please start distributing in the northwest!!

Poured into a La Cumbre pint glass.

A- Poured cloudy, golden/amber haze with a mean head on it. Looked like the froth on a root beer float.

S- Deep spicy rye, hints of hop.

T- Delightfully citrusy, mildly tart, grapefruit and other citrus fruits, rye spice coming in and out.

M- Almost creamy, a true treat to drink.

O- Yet another gem from the good folks at Westbrook. Although the appearance was a bit misleading, the aroma, smell and mouthfeel make for a great beer. I'd easily make this a regular sipper if I could get my hands on it more easily.

33cl can. Hazy orange with a thin white head. Citrus and grapefruit, bread, spices, caramel. Medium bodied - actually thicker than most IPAs - with a low carbonation and a moderately bitter and spicy aftertaste.

12oz can into a pint glass
no canned on date

A: Pours a very hazy, nearly opaque, golden yellow with 2plus fingers width of bright white colored head. Excellent retention before dissipating down to a thick film. Leaves many thick gobs of lacing.

S: Rye spice, citrus hops, tropical fruits. Lots of tangerine and apricot. Floral hops.

T: Rye and piney hop bitterness, citrus zest, orange, floral hops. Tons of citrus characters. Very nice.

M/D: Smooth for the style, moderation carbonation, somewhat drying on the finish. Drinkability is very good.

O: I really dig this one. Nice to have another go to local option in the 6 pack format. I predict I will be enjoying this one frequently.

12oz can poured into a New Belgium Globe. Canned 7/23/13 Reviewed live.

A - Pours a rusted orange with a huge pillowy white head from a gentle pour... Possible over carbonation issue with this one. Excellent lacing though!

S - Orange and grapefruit juice with a spicy rye background. Hops definitely over shadow the malt. Nothing yeast driven of note.

T - Much more balanced between the malt and hops. Rice spice and pine bitterness intertwine - some times pleasantly some times harshly. Hints of assorted citrus try to shine through.

M - With the possible over carb and rye base this brew is as dry as they come. The spice notes linger hard.

O - I had higher expectations for this brew, not a bad beer at all though. I think it's pretty good and a nice change up. However I haven't quite found a hoppy rye beer that doesn't clash on my palate. But that's just me.
