Notes: Citrus Ninja Exchange is the first of two collaboration beers brewed with The Charleston Beer Exchange. The first incarnation (released on draft only in September 2011) was a single-hopped Cascade double IPA brewed with approximately 50 lbs of fresh grapefruit, and then dry-hopped 4 times in the fermentor. The 2012 version has a simplified malt bill and uses a blend of American and New Zealand hop varieties.

Consumed extremely fresh (within two weeks of bottling). This beer is exactly what I don't like in IIPAs. It features a heavy sweet malt backbone that adds massive caramel/honey notes to the beer and detracts from the hop and grapefruit profile. There was a still a nice bitterness and some grapefruit notes present, but all I could taste was the big sweet malt bill.

Enjoyed on vacation in Charleston, SC. Bottle to pint glass. 7/23/14.

A: Hazy golden color with thick-frothy egg shell head that retains a frothy film. Great laces.

S: Big on citrus, smells like fruit pineapple/banana juice. Notes of grapefruit, pineapple, mangos, banana, lemon, dusty grain, light malts.

T: Strong malt backbone and moderate to highly bitter. Notes of grapefruit, lemons, biscuits, and mangos.

M: Sticky, full body, high carbonation, and slightly harsh.

O: I really enjoy fruit-forward IPS/DIPAS and this is good, but not excellent. I certainly grab a lot of grapefruit, which lends nicely to the bitterness. Although it is not smooth, so that's a double-edged sword. The smell is definitely the best aspect and I would hold this up against almost anything in the SMELL metric. I would not go out of my way to get this, but I'm glad I had the chance to try this. I'm curious how a fresher bottle would differ.

From 12/02/13 notes. Had a 12 oz. glass of this served in a tulip at The Jeffrey in NYC.

a - Pours a murky, dark orange color with two inches of off white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of citrus hops, oranges, grapefruit, light tropical fruits, and light floral hops. Nice nose, with a decent amount of oranges and citrus to it, which I like.

t - Tastes of oranges, citrus hops, tropical fruits, lemon zest, fruity malts, bready malts, floral hops, grapefruit, nectarines, and light yeast. Taste is great, even better than the nose. More oranges and tropical fruits, and no bitterness. Awesome.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation, no bitterness at all. Quite smooth and creamy, fantastic mouthfeel.

o - Overall I thought this was a great DIPA. Very easy to drink and a great taste to it, with a lot of oranges, citrus, and tropical fruit to it. Really like this one, hope to get it again sometime.

22oz bottle into a snifter
Bottled on: 9/2/13

A: Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow with 1 fingers width of white head. Head dissipates down at a moderate rate and leaves a good amount of lacing.

S: Resinous pine, lots of citrus in the form of lemon-lime, orange, and of course grapefruit. More subtle malt sweetness in the background. Booze comes out as it warms.

T: Piney bitterness, soap, citrus rind. Not a lot of citrus flesh characters. A hop bomb for sure though, much more so than last years batch IMO. But mostly on the bitter aspect of the hop spectrum, not many tropical fruit notes and honestly rather lacking on the citrus.

M/D: Fairly smooth for the style, medium body, ABV is very well masked, drinkability is average.

O: A good DIPA, certainly hop forward with tons of bitterness. Not great though, in my opinion. Now granted I did spend the last couple of weeks indulging in the glory that is Boy King, so my DIPA expectations are at an abnormally high level right now. Either way, its definitely a solid beer that I enjoyed drinking, but I wont run out and buy a supply.
