Presentation: 500ml brown glass Teutonic Flasche. Dark green crown cap matches the bottles neck and main labels, which look just like those on the BA Avatar. Listed as “Diebels German Premium Dark Ale”. No strength listed but a Best Before End of 05.04 L16216…hmm, is that bad news!?

Appearance: Chestnut brown with a dark interior. Low key mild tan head disappears quickly and never puts up a fight, which is not like the Germans.

Nose: Oatmeal, crushed barley and a malt laden nose. Smooth caramel and a brown sugar sweetness. Simple, but nice enough.

Taste: Malty start, thin tastes set against a watery backdrop. Finishes with some caramel and dark chocolate, all sounds great but the flavors are low key and hard to break out at times. A little too depressed bitterness and malts but not much else to get excited about, well except a soft nutty aspect when it warms.

Mouthfeel: Tardy, sort of flat, watery and thin. Like a boring English Mild Ale.

Drinkability: Fair enough; nothing detracting or upsetting.

Overall: Nothing special. Another dark German brew that does nothing more than expected, never challenges but doesn’t upset either.

Sehr Durchschnitt.

(No head as poured at bar) From the top, dark brown, with a nose of hops and malt. Taste is unremarkable but slightly bitter. Watery, bubbly mouth, with a mildly bitter finish. Overall, not bad, but not impressive. This is a middle-of-the-road ale to me.

Pours a clear light brown brew, I could almost call it bronze but it is a bit to dark.

Smell is mild grain and malt and a noticeable amount of hops.

Taste is mildly sweet, almost dry in fact. Mild toasted grain flavors and moderate hop bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel is good.

Drinkable, but no more so than a good lager.

Pours with a soft, intensely energized carbonation that releases an annoyingly bitter nose atop a malt candy platform. The color is brown, just a notch lighter than the glass of a dogfish bottle, and very clear with a modest off-white head.

The taste is truly awful. It starts with a slight measure of Bavarian malt followed by a wall of harsh, unappealing bitterness. Even the mouthfeel didn't live up to the soft, feathery lightness suggested by the sound of this beer as it poured. And the aftertaste was a trainwreck.

The numbers on the brown half-liter bottle I drank seem to suggest that I consumed this beer two months before its expiration date.

In summary, this beer sucks.

Appearance – Light brown in color and very clear with a good, tight, white German head.

Smell – The aroma is simplistic but fantastic. The malts are extremely rich and sweet with a hop note or two for balance. The brown sugar is thick and juicy here.

Taste – The malt here is a bit grainy but done up well. The sugar took a big step back, allowing the bitter nature of this ale to be appreciated.

Mouthfeel – Flat and bitter with a light to medium body.

Drinkability – This may be a bit harsh for some, but I enjoyed it. The sharp grain coupled with an endive-type bitterness is not what a lot of people think of when they think of beer or a dark ale. I would suggest pairing this with food, preferably with something heavy.

(Enjoyed at Manni's in Ft. Myers, Fla. Beer appeared to be fresh, in appropriate glass, and at appropriate temperature.)

Almost melon orange in color with an off-white head that clinged crisply to the glass, somewhat cloudy. Bready, Munich malt notes dominate the nose. Restrained flavors with minimal hopps played off some surprisingly assertive hard water flavors. Overall, very refined.

The beer pours a translucent mahogany color with a humongous creamy light tan head, as it ever so slowly decomposes the residual lace a fine veil to shield the glass. Somewhat earthy, sweet malt and a hint of caramel, crisp, clean and fresh with the start lightly sweet and nicely malted, top is light to middling in its feel to the palate. Finish is sassy in its acidity, the hops delightful in their spicy but subdued presence, aftertaste quite dry and linger, a very drinkable beer, a good change of pace beer in my humble opinion, and well worth a sample.

Pours a nice brown with a hint of amber. The head is beige effervescent. It settles quick to leave a 1/8" coat of foam on the top. The nose is fruity malt with a nice hop undertone. The flavor is a solid hop with a malt undertones and a barely noticeable spiciness from the yeast. The mouthfeel is light and refreshing and followed up by a moderate hop aftertaste. very drinkable and good.
