Wry Wolf 2.0 is a rye bock from Wild Wolf in Nellysford, VA, brewed with both ale and lager yeasts. This is the most recent incarnation of a project that once featured a 7.8% abv monster, but I think they got it right this time.

This brew pours a glowing orange-y amber, with a somewhat lazy-seeming carbonation. This appearance offers zero clues as to what the consumer is in for.

The intrigue begins in the nose. Bright banana and a touch of fruity bubblegum are the major notes, with a spicy rye note in the background. The taste follows suit, with those fruity flavors more than balanced by a firm backbone of lightly caramelized malts and bold rye. Hops are less than assertive (25 IBU), but their background bitterness supports, rather than overwhelms, the unique malt flavors. Despite the insignificant head, the mouthfeel is surprisingly active, with all flavors lingering in a long finish.

"A bock that's an ale"- where have I heard that before? Maybe WW did draw some inspiration from Rogue Dead Guy Ale, and no one can blame them, but in my eyes this is a new foray rather than an attempt to clone. Wry Wolf is a product of expert control of brewing in the gray zone between ideal lager and ale temperatures, while DGA is a cool but imperfect idea whose flaws are masked by an overload of hops. Much love to WW for 1) chasing the dream of filling unknown beer territory, 2) sticking with the dream through multiple iterations, and 3) getting the darn thing right. You've got a real winner here. Buzz should start.... now.
