Large place, very hopping, dart games, large bar, energetic staff, the food was very good. The stout was excellent with the food, will try to visit again.

Coming off I 90/94 North the four and half mile drive through the country to the pub is an interesting one. I think I saw an old timey general store; I know I saw a goat sitting on top of a picnic table. Is this Madison? It's certainly Wisconsin.

I've been to the downtown Great Dane location a half dozen times or so over the years, and have enjoyed my experiences there. The Eastside pub is quite large. It is full of dark colors, but missing the wood that fills the original location. The pop country playing in the back ground also gives it a much different feel. I like the character of the downtown brewery much more. One thing this location has that I like is that the female staff aren't forced to wear the sexist Hooters'esque uniforms they wear downtown.

The beer is Great Dane brewed beer, and that is a good thing. (I've never had a bad beer from them in my somewhat limited experience.) There are twelve taps, and two beer engines.

The food on my visit was disappointing. I had an unseasoned burger. I asked to have it done medium. They cooked it to a shade lighter than hockey puck. The fries were also unseasoned.

The service I received was prompt, and friendly, and that's all I need.

Overall, my experience there wasn't good enough that I would visit again. The most interesting part of the experience was the ten minute drive from the interstate to the bar. If, in the future, I'm driving through Madison, and want a quick stop for a bite and a beer that's close to the interstate I'll make it Ale Asylum. If I want to go to the Great Dane I'll take the extra couple minutes to go to the downtown location.

One of my favorite spots! Much better than the downtown location, probably one of the best views in the city, head upstairs at night and there's an awesome view of the Capitol. Great place to have a great dinner date, or stay downstairs by the bar and play pool. Either way this place is for everyone....unless you want a Bud Light

After an epic three days in Chicago, I was happy to head home after a morning stop at Binny's in Schaumberg for liquid souvenirs, a bottle shop I've been buying from for years on the way home from Chicago or Purdue—never been disappointed. Can't even openly admit how much Al and I bought together, but the staff took notice. Check out Al's blog, as he's been review most every beer.

I've been to the Great Dane many times, but only the downtown location, never having a reason to stop at one of their more distant pubs. We took the drive by opportunity to have a quick lunch and test one farther out: Eastside.

I put the address in my GPS while still on I-90. Good thing, since, unknown to me, there's no exit from the freeway right at the Cottage Grove Rd. The GPS took us off the freeway, seemingly, way early and gave us, necessarily, a tour of the Wisconsin countryside. Not the easy-off, easy-on I had been planning, but it worked. In an earlier, pre-GPS world, it would have been more of a hassle.

To be expected, there's a much smaller selection of beers compared to the downtown location, but the quality was just as good from our two drafts. The Carpenter's Crop IPA was better than reasonable and a shared glass of the Barley Wine Black was also very good. For my meal, the appropriately lunch sized Wisconsin Cheddar Mac more than hit the spot, but I think I had had my expectations too high and it wasn't quite what I had hoped for.

To match up to the downtown Great Dane is a pretty high bar. Eastside is too suburban and feels like a chain compared to the authentic grittiness of the downtown location. However, the quality of the smaller number of offered beers is the same, which fit our needs today. A worthy stop that was pretty much what I was hoping for—a high quality, fast (relatively with the tour de cows) lunch stop while being able to move on down the highway.

Great Dane Eastside was not my first choice in which Great Dane location to visit. But I was tired and had to stop at Ale Asylum as well so it was off to Eastside. The pub has a chain restraunt vibe to it, ala Granite City or Rock Bottom. About a dozen beer choices were available. The beer I tried was good but not really memorable. Most people in the place were either drinking cocktails or wine. Service was fast and friendly. Cute bartender. The biggest letdown was the food. Poorly constructed and executed. It was also rather flavorless. Beer prices seem to be $.50 more a pint then anywhere else in the area. I would give them another try but I should of went to the downtown Great Dane.

Stop #226 on my brewery tour of the world.

Having visited the exceptional downtown location of Great Dane earlier in the day, I figured I'd cross another brewery off my list and hit up this location which was close to my hotel.

Two very different experiences.

The evening crowd was very young and there were lots of cocktails being poured vs. the beer. The interior felt more like a suburban chain. To be fair, the downtown location is the benchmark for brewpubs in historic settings.

I went with a pint of the pale ale and the hottest wings they had which were slightly underdone for my liking - very spicy though.

A dream come true for me...a brew pub in my neighborhood.

Technically, the new Great Dane Pub on Madison' East side (in the site formerly occupied by Cloud 9 and Jovian Taphaus) just sells Great Dane beers brewed at their downtown and Fitchburg locations.

The downstairs is primarily a bar area. Currently, this location has 8-10 of Great Dane's most popular beers at all times, plus 3 rotating beers.

Just like the other Great Dane locations, the food and service were superb. I ordered a Black and Tan made with the Emerald Isle stout and Old Glory Pale Ale and it did not separate, although that may have been due to it having been carried upstairs.

I also ordered a growler of the Black Earth Porter, which is my favorite of their beers.

This location was very busy on Friday and Saturday night, and should be successful as, unlike their predecessors, Great Dane has several other successful sites and can reap economies of scale by shipping excess inventory from their other locations to this site.

I will be spending a lot of time here!
