Notes: The great warrior of Gath. The mighty champion of the Philistines. Embedded in ancient folklore and religion. Coming from the World of Old. His size and stature is not human. He is bigger. The armor of Goliat is black. Creamy black lacings. Stands with a towering height. He can grab elements from both earth and heaven. Earthy, roasted, notes from the earth. Warming, pungent, sweet notes from the skies. His heart is beating slowly, almost endlessly slow. This man is thought to be invincible!

Ingredients: Water, barley malt, roasted barley, dark cassonade sugar, flaked oats, hops, gourmet coffee and yeast.

Brewed at De Proef Brouwerij, Lochristi-Hijfte, Belgium.

375ml bottle poured into a Hill Farmstead tasting glass, side by side with the barrel aged variant.

The beer pours a jet black color, cola brown edges with a finger or so of khaki head that has nice lace a decent retention. The aroma is huge on the coffee, really nice choice of bean, smooth, rich, roasty, lots of chocolate, grain, a bit of sweetness and a touch of stone fruit, but man the coffee is huge and in your face, but really balanced within itself. The flavors are spot on, huge expression of coffee, chocolate, rich malted grain, a touch of roastiness, nice richness, mildly sweet with stone fruit and vanilla at the finish. The mouthfeel is excellent, thick, coating, rich, smooth, gentle but full bodied with an easy and creamy finish.

Verdict: A decadent and delicious coffee stout, all the hallmarks of a great stout with a perfectly integrated blast of coffee. One of the finest coffee stouts around, and in fact, one of the finest stouts in general. To Øl really hit the nail on the head here.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass.

A decent small head, with a good dark tan collar that manages some good staying power. Thin puck, but a good black tan hole of head in the middle from rising carbonation. Classic, opaque and very dark walnut brown next to black color. Leopard style lacing while drinking.

Aroma is an excellent mix of the basics. Coffee warmth that accentuates a roasty sweet malt base. Roasted bean and dark grains that envelope the nose nicely. Small hints of nice little hazelnut and chewy sensing nut like quality also make an appearance on the nose. Very nice and with soft subtle qualities, sometimes less is more and this is a perfect example.

Palate manages the goods, and even a few more surprises than expected. Silky body, even a mix of thick coating oily mouthfeel which lets the flavors stick all through your teeth. Noticeably sweet easily, but not severely, and brings out much more diverse flavors. Coffee and almost sweetened condensed milk, but takes a big turn as dark roasted malts kick in. Nice bitterness, with some tobacco notes, and a fantastic anise and slow lingering soft black licorice quality that really coats the back of the throat.

This is a real impressive stout that takes some excessive deal of sweetness, but brings out far superior and unexpected flavors. Much of the coffee notes on the palate though are lost, but what is replaced ironically is far superior.

Purchased this by recommendation from the store beer buyer. This is in his "top 5" all time beers.

Appearance: Dark in color with a malty creamy head. 4.5

Smell: Chocolate and coffee are strongly present. There was another unique smell. I took multiple whiffs to discover it. I can most relate it to an acidic smell like lime juice. It actually fits in nicely. 4.5

Taste: Very unique, wonderful taste. Has the chocolate, coffee, lime juice taste with some more flavors going on as well. Very good my friends.

I am very glad I took his recommendation. I was a little worried as I purchase another one of his recommendations the same same and had it a few days before this one. I was not a fan of that brew (we will keep it unnamed) but this one is delightful, Highly Recommend

Until Next Time

On the roasty and dry end of the stout spectrum. Pours black with a rocky, loose tan head that settles down to 1 or 2 inches. Not viscous looking but coats the glass well. Lots of dark roast coffee, cocoa, roasted malt. Taste follows through with primarily coffee, some nuttiness (hazelnut?), a roasted oat flavor, a hint of bitterness. Moderate feel with some creaminess.
