I like this recent swing to coffee beers that aren't black. this one is a mikkeller collaboration that maintains the heavy coffee and the big hop profiles well throughout. pours an apricot orange color, with a fluffy white head that's not real resilient. it smells like an old man. its weathered and tired, wise but reserved, and somehow timeless. the coffee is there, but its not fresh, its like unroasted beans or something. im not a coffee expert. the hops are bright and floral, and go well with the coffee in both smell and taste. a lot more malt balance than i expected, and a very well hidden alcoholic strength. I am getting a little bit of a caffeine buzz from this, which is much appreciated. I like that its not acidic in feel, even thought the coffee flavors are strong. the body is fuller than medium but not filling to me, although it could stand a little more carbonation. it almost has the same mouthfeel as a cup of coffee, which is an interesting post beer observation. overall I like the way the hops and coffee blend together while each retaining their own spunky identities, and how well hidden the alcohol is. I would buy this again.

I never imagined this beer would ever exist – a coffee DIPA? As crazy as it sounds, I am really excited to try this one out.

A: Looks more like a DIPA mixed with coffee than a DIPA with coffee flavor, pouring a dark amber-orange with a dirty brown haze. Reminds me of dull carrot juice. The head is just as unique: it starts as a foamy two fingers, tan and creamy. And as the bubbles pop, the texture beings to look like cappuccino cream; it collapses in a churning, thickening manner. It seriously reminds me of coffee, which is a great thing for this beer.

S: Now that’s an odd mix of scents; there’s a huge blast of fresh-ground coffee at the start, though without the strong roast scents that are normal for coffee stouts. This is more of a strong cinnamon, bitterness, mineral, and acidic fruit, sort of like you would get from a dried out coffee-filter. It’s different, as expected. Hops are barely apparent, but you can make out a faint oil aroma of pine. A layer of malt shows a chocolate, roast, and caramel syrup with an herbal note of unanticipated anise; not too thick, though, giving this a bit of a thin profile under the initial coffee.

T: Rich, flavorful – its malt backbone is a bold, caramel-heavy thickness, a familiar DIPA taste. Toffee and maple make up even more syrupy sweetness, with a dedicated taste of toasted malt underneath. The bitters are lively and complex: iced coffee, thick, sticky pine, citrus rind, and an espresso bean kick. Delicious. Any fan of Stone’s black IPAs would enjoy this palate: I’m getting thick, chewy tastes of licorice and malty darkness, tobacco and fig. The aftertaste is incredibly earthy – coffee with sugar, walnut, mineral water, and vanilla – with a lasting sting of peppery American hops. Impressive!

M: This is the only place you feel the alcohol presence, drying as it builds a strong coating effect. The hops pepper the feel with intensity, balanced nicely with the warmth of the booze and the chewy grain presence. Much more drinkable than a coffee stout, but with all the boldness of a DIPA.

O: A pleasant surprise, most definitely. While the bottle was pretty expensive, it was a worthwhile investment; I may even pick a few up to age, just to see how much of the American DIPA character comes out from underneath the darkness of the coffee. The perfect morning alternative to a cup of Joe…just make sure you don’t have anywhere to be, because the 10.5% alcohol will knock you out.

12oz bottle poured into a To Øl Teku glass.

The beer pours a super murky brown caramel color, hues of burgundy and tan with a bone colored head, very billowy and soft, nearly 2 fingers high that has nice retention and leaves behind a massive web of lace. The aroma is heavy on fruit forward coffee, citrus hop with a touch of pine and sweet, rich caramel malt with just a touch of subtle roast. On the tongue, the coffee is integrated so nicely with the fruity hops, nice roast, pine, citrus and rich malt that is balanced well and transitions very nicely from coffee roast, to fruity hop to smooth malt. The body is nice, very lively, with crisp carbonation that dances on the tongue nicely with a nice dry finish.

Verdict: A very unusual beer, but quite successful in it's mission to blend coffee and hops. The beans used perfectly compliments the hop profile and aren't overly harsh or roasty, but rather smooth and highlight the fruit flavors in both the beans and the hops.

Served in a tulip glass

This beer pours hazy and a deep amber color. It is topped with several inches of creamy, tan head that clings to the side of the glass.

The coffee aroma hits my nose first misleading me into thinking of a stout. Then the citrus pops up with some orange and grapefruit.

The first taste is of coffee. Then, much like the smell, the citrus comes into play. However, the more I drink, the more the coffee flavor asserts itself on my tastebuds leaving a lingering coffee aftertaste.

It is full and creamy not unlike a stout.

This is an interesting beer. The balance of the coffee and citrus flavors agrees favorably with my palate. I am enjoying this beer. The next logical step is a bourbon barrel coffee IPA.

A - Hazy amber-brown with a finger of frothy off-white head. Fades fairly slowly.

S - Sweet caramel malts, grapefruit, citrus, and pine hops, roasted coffee, brown sugar, and some booze.

T - Sweet caramel malts, grapefruit, citrus, and pine hops, some resiny bitterness, roasted coffee, brown sugar, and some booze.

M - Medium-plus bodied, moderate carbonation. Smooth with a bitter, sweet, warming finish.

D - Nice balance, could have had a bit more punch.

Marriage of coffee and double IPA? They did it! Not wholey convinced it's a good thing, but if anybody had a chance to do it right, this is it. Poured at a good temperature with a mammoth, foamy, frothy, light tan head that settles down and lots of lace. Color is a cloudy/hazy amber. Aroma is hop, malt, coffee. Flavor's much like nose with bitter & sweet on top, balanced with some carbonic tang and coffee showing up much more. Body is full and carbonation good, but some clashes between extreme bitterness and tang. Finish is like flavor, long, and boozy. Interesting, but one is enough.

Done in a horizontal tasting with Koppi Coffee IPA from Mikkeller and Bed and Breakfast from Brouwerij De Molen.

Eye: Starts off with a nice creamy one finger head that eventually falls down to a sheet over the beer. Lacing looks nice as well. Color is pretty much the same as the Mikkeller Koppi Coffee IPA, murky tan/light brown.

Nose: Strong blend of hops and coffee in the aroma here. Earthy hops take the lead and coffee struggles to get through but is there in the background creating an interesting backdrop.

Tongue: Less intense coffee flavor in this one, hops are the much more dominant flavor. The aroma suggests that they'd be nicely balanced but Mikkeller's Koppi Coffee IPA is a much more what I expected from an IPA with coffee in it. Unlike the Mikkeller, this one gets bitterness from hops, very little coffee flavor making its way through, its much more subdued. Pretty green hop flavor, real fresh, real earthy. Alcohol is detectable. Coffee flavor is there, but it supports the hops instead of; like the Mikkeller, taking the stage from the hops and then bringing them back for an encore performed together. This beer has more depth of flavor and isn't as single minded. The more I drink of it the better I like it, its a completely different beast, more complex. Medium body with appropriate levels of carbonation. Definitely an IIPA though.

Drinkability: This one is definitely worth checking out. Different than the Mikkeller because it isn't as single minded and its much more complex. Two very different beers here, can't really choose a favorite because they are so different. Both are better than the Bed and Breakfast though. Depending on what I want I'd have to say go for this one over the Mikkeller just because its a little more complex, but if I want something straight forward and single minded then I'd go for the Mikkeller.

11.7oz bottle into snifter

A – Dark rich amber, toffee colored creamy head, sticky beautiful lacing.

S – Muted, dark and rich malty notes, some coffee is hiding in here, but very subdued.

T – Sweet dark coffee, bitter hops, light malt sweetness.

M – Medium body, long lingering finish, proper carbonation.

O – One of the best coffee beers I've ever had. Excellently balanced.

Poured from a 11.2 oz bottle in to a snifter.

Opaque burnt orange color with a light tan 1/2" head. Recedes to 1/8", comes back nicely with a swirl. Leaves wide spotty curtains of lacing. Looks a little odd for a DIPA but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt since it's made with coffee.

Roasty, nicely bitter coffee comes out most on the nose with some orange and lemon zest. A little white pepper. Not too complex but it's nice how well the coffee and hops come together.

The taste reverses the nose, with juicy orange, lemon zest, and a little pine coming on first, followed by rich, smooth, roasty coffee. The finish is all coffee with a slight hop bitterness. Nicely balanced. Again, the hops and coffee go together well. Hides the ABV well.

The texture is excellent. Medium bodied, smooth, creamy in the middle but ends drier, lets the coffee and hops linger in the aftertaste.

Not your normal IPA but I liked it a lot. They made the coffee and hops come together better than I would have imagined. Unique, balanced, and well crafted.
