Black IPAs (where are they on the beer styles list???) are always a good bet - Kooinda make a great alternative. First time I've had anything from this brewery and it was pretty pricey at almost $11 for a 330 ml bottle at Jims.

To me, this was true to type. Appearance is almost that of a stout or porter. The head thins out quickly but stays for a long time. Great hoppy overtones exactly as you would expect. If if had to make one criticism it's that the ABV is evident.

Even at this price I think this is a beer I will visit again. Maybe next time I'll try it back to back with an Aussie version.

330ml bottle. Snifter glass. Black color headed by deep tan & creamy crown. A lasting layer remains on top leaving some spots on sides. Roasted aromas, hints of oak, notes of chocolate & fresh black tobacco. Crispy upfront & gentle bitterness at first sip. Medium to full body. Soft carbonation. Silky palate. Complex flavor profile arises in the middle: hints of fudge chocolate, licorice hues, lemon touch, nuts, black cocoa & coffee infusion. Citric zest astringency opens a long bitter finish. Dried nuts on the aftertaste. Great job & well balanced beer: high ABV is not felt & bitterness is sharp but sticky malty backbone holds on line.

Pours deep dark brown with an overflowing light brown head. Beautiful! Strong earthy smell. Strong toasty taste, chocolate, rustic funk, and a bit of bitterness. Very flavorful!

Tasted this at a beer club in Dublin - it was definitely a consensus favorite of the evening.
The look is deep black and the smells of tobacco, coffee, maybe even oil. Taste is extremely deep and rich, with a bit of a bite on the end. Dry, definitely not sweet. I really enjoyed this beer.

Pitch black with a very tall tan head. Roasted grains, bitter cherries, dark chocolate, cocoa and coffee. Medium bodied with medium carbonation and a bitter chocolate/cherry aftertaste. Excellent.

A: Toasted malt, boozy, smokey, molasses.
T: Malt, molasses, mild citrus, hops, nicotine,
M: Dry, medium body, very well rounded, great bitterness that lasts a long while.
O: A bit pricey but worth it. This is an outstanding Black Imperial IPA

330ml brown bottle purchased from Beer Cartel in Sydney. Served to me blind by @tobeerornottobe.

Pours a deep, opaque brown, with a ridiculously frothy head of mocha foam that does settle down a little bit, leaving masses of crispy lace on the glass. Body is fairly light and fluid and there's no visible carbonation sticking around. Looks pretty decent.

Nose is lovely. Big fresh hops mingling with chopped dark chocolate to give jaffa and liqueur characters. Pleasant citrus notes, slight roast, and fresh fragrant cold-press coffee. Yep—it's a great nose for an IBA.

Taste is also good, and follows the mould well. Clean and crisp for the most part, with a pronounced hop character running through it's length, and lingering ephemeral roast characters kicking the back palate. Body is pleasingly light, but given some structure by a slightly chalky dry malt character.

Overall, this is a pretty damn good IBA. It's fresh and bright, but with a genuine hat-tip to the roast characters which give it its colour. It's that nice balance that's really worth achieving.

Poured into a Black Raven pint glass. Pours pitch black with a three finger fine light brown head with great retention (actually grows over time) and tons of thick lacing. Aroma of piney hops, toasted malt and charred coffee. Unusual flavor of estery pine and citrus hops, charred and toasted dark malt, overnight coffee and light coffee. The hops dominate the flavor, but are not intensely bitter. Semi-dry finish with lingering hop bitterness. Medium bodied with light creaminess. An interesting take on an American Black Ale, but emphasizing hops rather than dark malt. The malt is there and but provides its char and toast in a supporting role. Flavor seems a bit thin by West Coast black ale standards because of the light malt bill, but still covers all the bases and is nicely complex.

A tower of cappuccino foam over charcoal black. 4
Ash, orange oil, and touches of flowers + brown sugar. 4
Big char, some sour coffee, blackberries, then resin, spinach, and orange peel. 4
Cocoa end and endless bitter linger.
Oily, clingy, almost medium. 4

Galaxy, Centennial, Columbus, Cascade

Certainly has the eponymous black - not quite a porter, but tons of burn. Hops are a bit buried, too - can't say I get any light tropical notes from Galaxy (and Dec.2.*18* date suggest this is pretty fresh.) Story here is IBUs and roasty notes playing back and forth. Hefty, but not especially sophisticated. 4

Black pour with a really nice light mocha head, small, but lasts quite a lot and leaves nice lacing on the glass.
Nice balanced smell of dark malts and hops. Chocolate, light coffee, some cigar, rich pine, burnt sugar, faint dark licorice, rich grapefruit and lemon peel. Some hints of smoke and even some wood.
Starts pretty straight-forward, with rich roasted malts and leafy hops with a strong pine note. Citrus peel and a bit of juiciness underneath. Some dark chocolate shows up, with just a bit of burnt sugar, but the sweetness is kept at a minimum. Spicy, earthy hops in the finish, with some ashy burnt dark malts.
Aftertaste has a nice hop freshness, with a bitterness upgraded by the lingering burnt malts and some coffee powder. Medium body, medium carbonation, kinda smooth. The lactose brings a certain creaminess, i think, but i can't really detect it in the taste.
A traditional Black IPA, has all the elements ticked, and they're intense enough to actually make this beer stand out in the crowd.

Pours a black color. One inch head of a tan color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of alcohol, wood, sweet malt, roasted malt, and piney hops. Fits the style of an American Black Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of alcohol, strong sweet malt, roasted malt, piney hops, earthy malt, hint of yeast, and wood. Overall, great appearance, good aroma, body, and blend, but the earthiness is unfavorable.

Teku glass. Bottle. Pitch black with light brown, tow fingers head. Average lacing. Roasted, smokey and wooden aroma. Taste is definetely roasted, form the middle you can feel heavy bitterness, which quickly dissapears, some tart and ashy notes. In the background some roasted coffee and zesty citrus. Dry, medium to full body, sticku to oily texture. Earthy aftertaste. In general interesting beer something between dry stout and black IPA. From the dry stout you can experiency ashy and dry notes, from black IPA some hoppy nature. Just try it.

Totally black, with a light brown colored creamy foam.
In the smell roasted malt, light toasted, and then a loto of american hops, with citrus and resnous notes.
Some cocoa and hazelnut.
Full and round taste, malty. Light toasted, dark chocolate. Green notes of hop. And green nuts.
Quite full body, without being too much. A lot of dark chocolate in the aftertaste, followed by green hops and cocoa. Long.
Good, full, intense, gratifying.

Pours black with a large tan head.
Nose shows roasted grains and coffee with a big pine and grapefruit hit behind.
Very roasty flavours too, massive dry roasted grains with more pine and spicy hops leading to an aggressively sharp bitterness.
Carbonation seems a little full on.

Drank from my Ciney sniffer

A - Pours a deep black oily colour with a large tanned head that retains well

S - Malt, molasses and whiskey booze.

T - Up front some nice sweet malts that are well balanced middle palate is smooth and vanilla. The finish is very earthy

M - Medium to full body with low carb

O - A well rounded beer that lacks complexity. If truth be told its more of a porter than anything else.
