When she comes knocking on the door, can you expect a bitter woman of care and finesse or one of abrasion and fury? Blanc De Blanc does a little of both as its supple character links with the souring acidity of hops. We love her and brace against her.

She opens with a hazy amber pour, just a shade deeper than honey. Building a short but dense lather of foam, fruity and winey aromas abound. They mingle with juicy grapefruit, orange, apple and apricot as the fruity hops, deep yeasty esters and wine barrel fruitiness all rise at once.

Continuing to build across the palate, its fruit-forward demeanor takes greater hold with the taste of musty grape, bruised red apple, booze-soaked tropical notes and an earthy tobacco nod. Then as the carbonation races in to scrub the palate, a zesty peppercorn, vinous acidity and citric tone takes place and carries the taste toward finish.

Drying late, the rich fruit finally begins to dissolve and the dryness gains control- inviting an elevated finish of rose wine, apple cider, bitter orange peel and tannic oak.

The beer comes in a golden orange.

The aroma hits of stone fruit, sweet apricot, a touch of honey, white wine, and hay funk.

The flavor follows with the dry wine notes, then onto stone fruit flavors, on the back is almost a spicy saison quality with breadiness and oak finishing off the beer.

A great balance of Brett, hops, fruit, and barrel.

22oz bottle poured into a tulip
A: Light brown, very hazy with a 1/2-finger head that quickly settles to a thin lacing
S: Chardonnay, sour apple, light grain
T: Kind of a weird oaky/bitter without much of the sour notes that came through on the nose
M: Medium-bodied, bitter
O: Not sure how I feel about this one. Interesting beer but struggled to finish the bottle. Again fairly bitter but not from traditional hops; I think more sour on the palate would spice it up

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy deep orange/amber color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pineapple, pear, apple, tannic white wine, oak, light vanilla, pepper, herbal, grass, light honey, bread, light funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy brett, wine barrel, citrus hops, and pale malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pineapple, pear, apple, tannic white wine, oak, light vanilla, pepper, herbal, grass, light honey, bread, light funk, and yeast/oak earthiness. Fair amount of tannic tartness, citrus peel bitterness, and yeast spice on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, lemon/orange zest, pineapple, pear, apple, white wine, oak, light vanilla, pepper, light honey, bread, light funk, and herbal/yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and robustness of fruity/spicy brett, wine barrel, citrus hops, and pale malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness/tartness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth and fairly crisp/acidic mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent wine barrel aged brett IPA. All around great balance, robustness, and complexity of fruity/spicy brett, wine barrel, citrus hops, and pale malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on with balanced acidity. A very enjoyable offering.

A: Pours hazy gold producing a creamy, moussey, 2” off-white foam collar that grips the side of the glass leaving thick ledges of lace.
S: Fruit, grapes, white wine, fresh herbs.
T: Some large pitted fruit and citrus with some sweetness but finishes dry. The bitterness is big on the finish but it is well rounded and is well balanced by the malt.
F: medium body, above average carbonation with a super creamy texture.
O: A very refreshing IPA with a luscious creamy texture.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy, deep yellow color leaning toward orange/amber. Very minimal head which drops quickly. Minimal lacing.

Aroma: Chardonnay barrel is big here. Lots of fruit, wine, and booze. Suggestions of vanilla and oak as well. These sit on top of Femme Fatale's usual gorgeous character: juicy citrus, tropical fruit, and hints of funk. Not sure they meld particularly well.

Flavor: Opens with lots of zesty citrus and grapefruit. Quite acidic on the palate with some wine barrel booze. Again, hints of vanilla and oak. Hints of some earthy, herbal character. Dries out significantly on the finish.

Feel: Dries out completely in the finish and the wine barrel has definitely contributed some oak/vanilla/tannin and a bit of acidity. Hints of bitterness throughout. Light to medium bodied.

Overall: The regular Femme Fatale and its variants are some of my favorite beers. While interesting, I'm not sure the wine-barrel treatment adds anything. Still an enjoyable beer to drink.
