Molotov Cocktail - Single Simcoe Hop EditionMolotov Cocktail - Single Simcoe Hop Edition
Notes: Despite the crudeness it is tricky to make an effective Molotov cocktail. Despite the unruly nature of the rebel it is very tricky to resist accepted conventions. Molotov Cocktail is a tour de force in rebellious hoppiness, it’s a spark for action and by far one of the most anti-authoritative beers ever made by Evil Twin Brewing.

A bit hazy yellow/amber with white head of decently dense foam, no lacing. Scents of pine, mango, pineapple are dominate over a bready malt. Taste is everything expected in a big IPA: strong bitters, big malt with the tropical fruit background and an astringent finish. Heavy body and above average carbonation.

Pours an effervescent honey color with 3+ fingers of cream colored head. Stays effervescent throughout, stellar lacing & head retention

S: Breadyness, no real hop nose

T: Bready, a little honey malt, grapefruit, & pineyness up front. Cakeyness, a little more grapefruit, woody hops, & dryness. Finishes cakey, with a little toffee, dryness & woody hops

MF: Medium/heavy body, slight carbonation, good balance

Drinks easy enough, doesn't taste retired to me. Worth a go

On the docket: 22 oz. Evil Twin Brewing Co.’s Molotov Cocktail Single Simcoe Hop Edition

Poured into: 6 oz. wine glass

S: Burnished, bronze-orange body that rests under a beige head of thick foam. Tiny bubbles actively rise to the top.

A: Simcoe, simcoe, and more simcoe. A big nose of passion fruit, but slight spice, earth, and pine notes. The malt here is completely crowded out by this hop behemoth.

T: A brief sweetness of clean malt greets you, before a huge explosion of hoppy, bitter goodness. Much of the nose comes through into the taste, with a slight twang from the passion fruit. Tropical profile. Ends very dry, bitter, and piney.

F: Medium, good carbonation. Long finish, with a bit of piney oil.

O: Does not drink like it's 13% abv (careful!). Excellent way to feature a single hop variety. I’d drink more single hop Double IPAs if they were done this well.

S: 4 A: 4.25 T: 4.5 F: 4 O: 4.25

Suggested food pairing: creamy cheddar or bleu cheese. Salad with pineapple chunks, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting

Aroma is hops/Simcoe, spices and slight earthiness. The flavor is Simcoe/hops, berries/a hint of blueberries, slight earthiness, mild honey/sweetness, spices and a mix of the expected Molotov Cocktail alcohol and bitterness in the finish.

This beer pours a slightly hazy golden amber color with a huge fluffy white head. The retention is ok, and the lacing fantastic. The smell is muddled. Citrus and piney hops, sweet malt and alcohol. Taste is the same with some hop spiciness and good deal of bitterness. Feel is light side of medium with good carbination. Overall this is not a good beer. Too much booze, too sweet. Normally love simcoe hops, but this just not for me. Considering drain pouring the rest of this as I write the review.

A: A dirty yellow brown, with a considerable amount of chunks. A decent amount of white head on top.

S: Pine and grapefruit with perhaps just the smallest hint of onion. Definitely a lot of hop aroma in there.

T: Loads of hops! Grapefruit, pine, and some tropical fruit favors. Bitterness is pretty hefty, with a long lingering bitterness. The finish is slightly sweet, but man this beer could be very dangerous.

M: Fairly , light in mouthfeel with very active carbonation. I think the carbonation and the light mouthfeel keep this beer from becoming cloying.

O: Overall a pretty tasty beer, perhaps not for everyday drinking, but for the price... Holy hell is this a beauty.

Reviews all over the place on this one but an 83, I don't think so. Not a whole lot going on with the smell but I don't smell well anyway. Look is a dark amber with some floaties, which I don't mind. The taste when colder is smoother and once it starts warming the 13% shows it's head. Overall I enjoyed this beer & I don't think it's as sweet as others say.

Pours a clearish orange color that develops a slight chill haze in the glass. The head doesn't resemble an IPA and the usual craterous, meringue-like peaks and valleys. Instead it looks like every other head, though it's got an orange hue. Retention is fair, leaving a faint thin lace.

This thing produces an amazingly aggressive smell. VERY piney and floral. Dank. I don't know what Simcoe smells like, but it's evident in this beer. Any malt profile is destroyed by the hops.

Taste is bangin.' Lots of pine, but citrus flavors finally come out. Orange and grapefruit evolve and what seems to be pineapple. A bit of malt is alive too. At 13% they're is some alcohol.

A lot is taking place with the mouthfeel. A bit of sweet starts the party before the bitterness builds. The bitterness and heat last long into the finish and never really go away. For an IPA the body is full and manly.

I like this beer and I'm looking to buy some more. It's good stuff, complex with nice strong flavors and high ABV.

22OZ bomber; dated as 329: 14; not a lot of fizz upon opening. Poured a nice foamy white head (I was surprised at how 'white' it was), with a standard IPA golden color; very nice hoppy aroma (somewhat sweet); the flavor is very sweet (not too much), and very smooth. I detect little to no booziness--amazing considering it is 13% ABV. Overall: this is perhaps the best beer I have had to date. It has everything I am looking for in a quaff-able beer: it's smooth, sweet, fresh, and amazingly flavorful. I think this is a limited edition version of their Molotov Cocktail, but I may see if I can find another before its gone.

Poured from 22oz bomber. Golden-orange with a thin white head. Small clearish (pulp-like) particulate floating in the glass. Aroma is Sweet, caramel booze with some faint hop presence. Unfortunately taste follows nose. Cloyingly sweet, I don't mean "malt forward" , I like malt just not when it is too caramel sweet, especially when it should showcase hops. This beer gets low points because I like Simcoe and it gets no justice here. Recently I had a single hopped DIPA hopped 100% Simcoe and it showcased the hop fantistcally. In this the hop is hidden under an onslaught of sweetness and unfortunately as I sipped along it only felt sweeter. Feels sticky which only adds to my perception of sweetness. Not sure why I don't like this since I love "brown shugga" but this beer just didn't do it for me.

22oz Bomber

A — Pours a clear light amber hue into the glass, just looks thick coming out of the bottle as well. Quite a few bubbles slowly rise to the top, some sticky lacing left behind.

S — Smells of sweet hoppy juiciness, lots of juicy Simcoe action here, some real sweet malt undertone as well. Big bit of grapefruit and pineapple character.

T — Taste is initially hoppy and juicy, lots of pineapple, mango, melon, and grapefruit. Though it does morph into a real sweet and syrupy beer. Big and rich.

M — Medium bodied, incredible drinkability for being 13% ABV. Dangerous, like a Molotov Cocktail.

O — Very good overall, just dominated by sweetness, tough to drink a lot of, but great in small doses.

Served in a tulip glass from a 22oz bomber.

Appearance: Hazy dark gold color with medium bubbles on the body. Heavy bubbles towards the head rising about half a finger's length. Just to let you know the head is a straight white and settles quick before the first sip.

Smell: Has a strong alcohol scent and hit of citrus, smells nice but very light.

Taste: Very strong alcohol with a whiskey barrel hit.when I mean a hit I mean like a truck through a stop sign. It's definitely hoppy, little sweet but don't expect a dessert. Malty and quite hard to describe where it leaves you when you're finished with the first glass. Absolutely no complaints.

Mouth: Think of a malty Maple syrup. Citrus after-taste just lingers. Medium carbonation might listen up a bit.

Overall: Little pricey and might not appeal to all palates. I love IPAs in general and this one will go down as a classic. Salud, hope hou all enjoy!

Poured on 7/29/15 from 22-oz bomber (bottle date 11/25/14) into chalice. Beautiful translucent copper color with creamy white two-finger head, good retention and lacing. Aroma was more muted than expected, not overly piney or fruity. Taste was nicely balanced, with a little malt sweetness offsetting the hop bitterness. Not as much pungency from the hops as I expected. Will have to try a fresher one for comparison purposes. Even so, a fine brew.

Enjoyed from the bottle in a snifter glass. This nice IIPA pours a light hazy amber with a moderate head of white dissipating foam that dies down to a thin ring and nice spotty lacing with a bit of sediment. Nose of lemon grass, very herbal, grapefruit, and a TON of sweet honey malt. Flavors surpass the nose with sweet turbo heat from strong booze to all sides, grapefruit and earthy herbal notes balance out barley wine honey like sweetness in the middle and back with a light bitter hops note in the aftertaste. I personally liked the original version a touch better, but this is pretty solid for a single hops version of the famed cocktail. Moderate carbonation keeps it lightly spritzy and helping to cut through the slick coating nature of this beast.

Don't like IPA's but prefer barley wines and high octane Belgians? Try this beast and be prepared to be surprised. Another great from a great brewer.

Cheers

On Tap at One Mile House.

Looked Golden to light orange, thick creamy head.

Smelled of pineapple and mango, sweetness apparent.

Tasted syrupy sweet like someone poured mango concentrate into the beer. Overpowering sweetness.

Feel- Again the thickness added to the syrup sensation.

Really missed the mark with this. Doesn't showcase the hop. Way too sweet.

Poured from the 22 oz. bomber into a Tree House stemmed tulip.

a: Clear amber with a half finger thick white head which receded to thin patchy surface foam and spotty lacing.

s: Mild pine.

t: Heavy bready malt up front with caramel and slight tropical fruit notes, followed by a mederate hop bite. Bitterness pervades the mouth, fading gradually on a dry finish.

m: Full and smooth, like the regular Molotov. Good carbonation tingle.

o: Both this and the regular are tasty with winsome full mouthfeel, and both cover the very high 13% ABV very well, although given my ratings I evidently prefer the regular to this. But both are excellent at covering their very high 13% ABVs, and both are well priced for all that.

The genius of these guys is a bit off the mark on this one. Neither balance or panache is handled well. The sweetness doesn't balance the hop. The hop flavors have some off qualities. But this is measured against their normal mastery. Against the norm- not bad.

22 oz. bomber, tulip

A – Light copper in color and mostly clear. Pours with an inch of white, bubbly head, which does not stay for long.

S – Light pine and orange-citrus character take the lead. Biscuit-crackery malt.

T – Rich, orange marmalade, with a resiny, almost buttery component. Pine is mixed in with that resin. Extremely sweet, malt flavor is that of a shortbread cookie.

M – Very, very sweet, past the point of cloying. Juicy and full-bodied throughout, with only moderate-light carbonation. A small amount of bitterness on the end. Zero alcohol heat, it is very well-hidden.

O – Just extraordinarily, overly, sweet, outweighing any showcase of awesome hop flavors. Prefer the original Molotov.

On-tap 5/11/2015 at Natty Greene’s Tavern in, North Attleboro, MA served in a snifter glass.

A: The beer is a cloudy gold color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains citrus, alcohol, floral hops and caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out with a big bite of booziness. Then some sweet flavors of caramel and citrus quickly follow. The hops presence is there but it’s a bit subdued. The malt character is hearty and brings some balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: A little tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, very strong kick, good representation of style, there are definitely several better 2IPA’s that I would choose first.
