Brewed by:
Evil Twin Brewing
New York, United States

Style: American Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 13.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Despite the crudeness it is tricky to make an effective Molotov cocktail. Despite the unruly nature of the rebel it is very tricky to resist accepted conventions. Molotov Cocktail is a tour de force in rebellious hoppiness, it’s a spark for action and by far one of the most anti-authoritative beers ever made by Evil Twin Brewing.

Where strong IPA flavors flirt with barleywine balances, the Evil Twin brewers now celebrate the Simcoe hop in all its earthy, garlicy, oniony glory.

With a lighter than expected color spread, the golden ale layers in the glass with swirling legs of port and a short cast of foam. Its nose is bright with grapefruit and orange peel, but bring about those chivy notes that reminisce of cannabis. And once the first sip resonates upon the tastebuds, its honey-soaked character is realized.

The candied citrus middle explodes into a malty bit of simple sugar and fruit candy. With the hops dancing in the background, their tangerine, marmalade, and grapefruit flavors do little to thwart the syrup sweetness that then takes hold. As its vegetal flavors seep in, its grassy botanicals begin to shape its finish.

Simmering bitterness break through and give the waning moments a decidedly bitter taste, but trending soapy and with chlorophyl bite, the ale is bold but unsettled to the palate. In the end, the earthy celebration of Simcoe does its job, but with too much rebuttal from malt, the beer lacks hierarchy, balance and procession.

A rich looking brew, with apricot tones. Not at all clear, and the cream head dissipates fairly quickly.

Aroma is sticky sweet, with resin, cat piss, fresh cut grass, a touch of onion, and a hint of grapefruit zest.

Flavor reveals a syrupy sweet base, expected of such a high abv brew. The citrus pith and muted grapefruit hop notes provide a bit of contrast, as does the bitter, resiny finish.

Not quite the hop beating that I recall from the original. I enjoy big malt and big hops in my dipas, but this one does lack a bit in hop character for my liking. The malt sweetness overwhelms.

A sweet syrupy mess. Couldn't drink more than a few sips.

Bomber bottle, picked up at the affordable priced of, I believe, $6.99 at DiCicco's in Ardsley, NY

First thing to remember here is that is a 13% (!) beer....not for beginners...

It pours hazed and kinda dull looking lighter amber, loose and luxurious light tan head, leaves a quality looking film, thicker collar and spotty lace.

Leafy and herbal full force hopped up nose.

Herbal, minty and leafy hops abound, along with a quite sizable malt package. On the sweet side, with not quite the hop presence to make this overly drinkable. Enjoyable none the less for a hop heads night caper.

On the docket: 22 oz. Evil Twin Brewing Co.’s Molotov Cocktail Single Simcoe Hop Edition

Poured into: 6 oz. wine glass

S: Burnished, bronze-orange body that rests under a beige head of thick foam. Tiny bubbles actively rise to the top.

A: Simcoe, simcoe, and more simcoe. A big nose of passion fruit, but slight spice, earth, and pine notes. The malt here is completely crowded out by this hop behemoth.

T: A brief sweetness of clean malt greets you, before a huge explosion of hoppy, bitter goodness. Much of the nose comes through into the taste, with a slight twang from the passion fruit. Tropical profile. Ends very dry, bitter, and piney.

F: Medium, good carbonation. Long finish, with a bit of piney oil.

O: Does not drink like it's 13% abv (careful!). Excellent way to feature a single hop variety. I’d drink more single hop Double IPAs if they were done this well.

S: 4 A: 4.25 T: 4.5 F: 4 O: 4.25

Suggested food pairing: creamy cheddar or bleu cheese. Salad with pineapple chunks, carrot cake with cream cheese frosting

Wonderful aroma, way too sweet. I agree with all the other "sweet tea" reviewers. Nice chewy mouthfeel, but the sweetness was hard to take, too hard. I dumped out all but the 4 ounces I tried.

650ml bottle - they just had to make this single-hopped edition come in a bomber format, didn't they?

This beer pours a slightly hazy, pale golden yellow colour, with some odd swirling effervescence, and three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly off-white head, which leaves a wash of eroded limestone formation lace around the glass as it slowly recedes.

It smells of dense tropical fruit mass (pineapple, blood orange, and papaya), mildly dank pine resin, bready caramel malt, toffee pudding, a touch of raw onion, and further leafy, floral, and certainly perfumed hops. The taste is more heady citrus rind and pine needle astringency, biscuity caramel malt, lemon furniture polish, simple syrup, more muddled fleshy tropical fruit, ethereal chopped scallions, more leafy, floral hops, and a bristling hot, hot, and yet cold heat.

The carbonation is quite active in its pervasive and enveloping frothiness, the body medium-full in weight, and more or less cloying in its attempt at smoothness. It finishes on the sweet side, duh, the subservient caramel malt bowing to the fruitiness of both hop and alcohol, the assumed bitterness all but washed up.

Does sugar really catch fire all that easily? I ask, because constructing the titular weapon from this saccharine (relative) mess appears to be a less than ideal pursuit. It's like the sweetness has well masked both the bitter and the boozy here, which is kind of like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Anyways, not too difficult to drink, but somewhat hard to appreciate.

Bomber served cold into a pint glass.

The single simcoe hop addition is a slightly hazy copper color with thin white head.

Aroma is hoppy but not overly so for as strong as the beer is.

Flavor is bold and bitter with big hops and plenty of malt to balance it out.

Mouthfeel is medium to full I'm body and nicely carbonated. Alcohol is definately noticible as it warms on the way down.

Overall a huge and unique double IPA.

Nice looking beer with good mouth feel. The taste and smell were not good . Very sweet and cloying. I never drain pour, but this one was close.
