Notes: On a pilgrimage for immortal craft beer, we tripped on some heavenly drops of beer with amazingly overwhelming aromas of chili peppers and more, a thick fudge-like body, pitch black color and obviously only made in limited amounts. And the taste….furthermore jesus.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours midnight black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid finger of tan head that settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A rich, roasty, and spicy dark malt driven aroma with a scent of chocolate, coffee, and chili peppers. Dark roasted barley malt with a scent of dark chocolate, coffee, smoke, biscuit, toast, and yeast. Big scent of spicy chili peppers. Sweet scent of molasses. Also some hints of black licorice and tobacco. Subtle dark fruit hints of prune, fig, raisin, and cherry. Hops are pretty faint. A really good aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a roasty, rich, and spicy dark malt driven taste with notes of chocolate, coffee, and chili peppers. Dark roasted barley malt with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, toast, biscuit, smoke, and yeast. Big taste of spicy chili peppers. Some notes of black licorice, tobacco, and leather. Sweet taste of molasses. Dark fruit undertones of raisin, cherry, prune, and fig. Very light hops. A great taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Rich, chewy, spicy, and somewhat syrupy. Mild alcohol heat.

Overall: A really good twist on a great Imperial Stout. The chili peppers add a nice spicy kick that blends well with the dark malt flavors.

From a 330 ml bottle to a tulip glass.

A-The beer looks dark and thick. The head is on the short side with little retention. The foam is a nice, deep, brown color. It looks the part.

S-The aroma is rich and suggest well-roasted malt. I smell bakers chocolate, cocoa powder, some dark molasses sweetness and, of course, chili spice. The heat here comes through as chili powder instead of the vegetal, fleshy green chili flavor that is often present in spiced-up beers.

T-The taste is similar to the smell, but more complex. I get some cream or marshmallow flavor at first, but that is soon replaced by rich, dark roasted flavors like semisweet chocolate, cocoa powder, brown caramel, and dark molasses. The chili heat comes on the mid-palate, but fades towards the finish. There is virtually no alcohol.

M-The feel is thick and robust without getting syrupy. Carbonation is softer.

O-This is a very good beer. I especially like the chili flavor, which is dry and dusty instead of fleshy and vegetal. I love spice and this beer has just the right temperature for me--not too hot, but enough to add complexity. The mouthfeel is also a highlight. One of the better chili beers out there.

12 oz bottle poured into Speigelau glass

A: pitch black almost no head whatsoever but very small tan mocha head

S: very deep roast , anise, some bakers chocolate I can't really pick up any peppers

T: very nice stout some nice deep roasted malts, chocolate, anise maybe a tingle from the peppers but not much taste from them.

M: Very thick lovely feel

O: This is a fantastic stout I'm a little disappointed the peppers aren't more prevalent I notice some heat but I'm wondering if it's my imagination or if it's real either way what a great stout. It's thick and such a roast deep chocolate flavor actually you do get residual heat from the peppers which is quite wonderful.

Bottle purchased at Nathaniel Square Corner Store in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a dark black, with a very small head, and basically no lacing.

Smells like chocolate, mild pepper, molasses, and roasted malt.

It tastes pretty much the same. The chili character is fairly mild, there's also some chocolate, molasses, a little bit of hop bitterness, and roasted malt.

This is fairly thick, luxuriously bodied, very creamy, with a normal level of carbonation for the style.

This worked pretty well for me.

Pours a modest 1/4 finger head; retention is decent. Brew is a lovely black, the head a very dark tan.

Some chili on the nose, which takes some digging to find through the thick roasty notes common to Evil Twin's big stouts: molasses, licorice, coffee, and burnt caramel.

Flavor immediately hits on all cylinders: chili, chocolate, coffee, brown sugar, and roast up front; heat in the middle, building to a moderate strength (for a beer); ashy/char finish.

Smooth brew, showing some lingering chest heat on the finish. Lip-smackingly thick, chewy, and sticky.

As far as pepper stouts go, the best ones balance more sweetness with the heat. This one has a wonderful level of the latter, but it comes across ashier, roastier, and overall more "flat" (for lack of a better term) than my favorite pepper stouts. I think this is a very well made brew, but I personally won't be revisiting it.

Pours pitch black, virtually impervious to light. Nice mocha head slowly fades to a ring around the glass that sticks around for a while. Big aroma of burnt malt., not my favorite aroma. Rich and creamy, big and flavorful. Charred caramel comes to mind, lots of roasted malt flavor, bittersweet chocolate, espresso; chili makes itself known upon swallow. It really hits the back of my throat. This is quite full bodied, very smooth and not too sweet. Great balance. Overall another great Jesus beer from Evil Twin.
