Now that IPA has been trending "American" for more than thirty years, its a trip down memory lane for the tastebuds when in the capable hands of Evil Twin. Their Retro IPA celebrates what IPA was when American microbreweries broke from the restraints of their early British-inspired hoppy ale.

Hazy gold and with a tinge of bronze, Retro pours with a creamy persistent froth, casting savory aromatics of toasted malt and firm caramel with balancing citrus and leafy hop character. Its taste is toasty, nutty, caramelly, peppery and with a hint of smoky cumin.

And with much more balance than we expect in a modern IPA, Retro's stance is sweet, biscuity and firm with graham cracker and granola. With the hop flavor building, its the white and pink grapefruit and the bitter orange peel that provide the bulk of flavor and the billowing bitterness that eventually overshadows the malt. A finish of hop leaf, stem and a grassy bite reveals the rugged and unrefined nature of IPA an era ago.

Medium-bodied and lingering with a lasting malt balance, the beer would today be considered more of a slightly more hop-forward amber ale rather than an IPA, especially now that we value the dry-hopping stages of beer making more than ever and we prefer the "west-coast" dryness of IPA and the showcase of hops that the dryness allows.

I was 10 in 1985 so I couldn't verify this recipe.Pours into a standard pint a light to medium golden with a thinner bone white head atop.Earthy hops mixed with nutty malts in the nose, that smell is retro of an early 90's PW pale ale.Much more malt driven in my mind than hop driven, nutty with light caramel with some earthy hops coming in the back end.I like this beer and it would be great on cask but it's a "way back" retro IPA.

L: A hazy golden amber column filled with streams of tiny bubbles supports a 3" lacy off-white foam cap with good retention.

S: Popping the can releases an initial citrus and tropical fruit detectable aroma from an arm's length away

T: lightly sweet with light fruit and citrus up front while a light bitterness emerges on the sides with some biscuit and then the beer comes into balance just before the swallow.

F: creamy and smooth with a medium body and carbonation

O: a very well balanced and executed beer that is pleasant to drink

Poured from a 12 oz. can into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a deep amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About a finger of off white head that settles into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: An earthy and juicy aroma with a balance of hops and caramel malt. Earthy and grassy hops with some pine and citrus hints of orange and lemon. Pale malt with a scent of caramel, biscuit, grains, and yeast. A solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a juicy and earthy balanced taste of hops and bready malt. Citrus hop notes of orange and lemon. Earthy hop notes of grass and slight pine. Malt notes of caramel, grains, and biscuit with some yeast. A solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Fairly chewy and smooth.

Overall: A solid take on an older style of IPA. Nice balance of hops and malt.

12oz can, a partner to the 'Modern IPA' which both just arrived in Alberta. So, retro all the way back to the 1980s, huh?

This beer pours a slightly hazy, medium golden amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly eggshell white head, which leaves some decent out of focus ghostly lace around the glass as it slowly and easily recedes.

It smells of bready and doughy pale and caramel malt, a twinge of biscuity toffee, some earthy stoniness, and plain leafy, herbal, and grassy hop bitters. The taste is grainy and biscuity caramel malt, a muddled domestic citrus fruitiness, sharp green forest floor thingies, a damp flintiness, and more herbal, grassy, and gently spicy hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly Solid Gold in its tight and tingly frothiness, the body an adequate middleweight, and perhaps a bit too acerbic to be deemed particularly smooth, but it's not not, y'know? It finishes off-dry, barely, as those green hops carry on and on, while the malt starts looking for a tag-out.

Well, I wasn't drinking IPAs in 1985, unless, of course you mean India Pale A(&W), so it's hard to determine now the veracity of this one's claim. At any rate, this is pretty good, but more of a pale ale by today's (American) standards. Very drinkable with some Value Village fashion throwback scores, I would imagine.

Poured from a 12 OZ can into a pint glass. The appearance is a dark amber to orange with a small white head. The aroma is a really good blend of malt and hops. The taste matches the aroma. An outstanding beer.

Pours an effervescent bronze with 3 fingers of cream colored ( got a little carried away with the pour ). Vey nice lacing & good head retention

S: Breadyness & a little pine

T: Bready with piney and woody hops, just a little grapefruit as well up front. Dryness creeps in as this warms, along with herbal hops, a little cakeyness. Finishes piney, woody, with some pear, dryness & cakeyness

MF: Medium body with somewhat lively carbonation, love the balance

Solid IPA without all the citrus & tropical going one, very drinkable, nose could use some improvement

Look: Darker yellow in color, thin but lasting white bubbly head.

Smell: Pine resin, pine nuts, floral (rose), whole grain bread.

Taste: Bitter pine hit at first, nutty, then malt on the finish.

Feel: More 'chewy' than the average IPA, lasting finish.

Overall: I'm not really sure what I was expecting from something called 'Retro IPA', but it actually tastes retro! I know that makes no sense, but there's something about the overall effect that lends itself to being 'retro. A solid IPA!

A thanks goes out to the founding father of the canquest woodychandler, for this beer. I wasn't familiar with IPA's in 1985. I was 15 years old and happy with drinking 40's of O.E., Colt 45, or Red Bull with my crew. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a dark golden color with a 1 inch head. Smell is mild, some malts. Taste is bitter, some mint, none of the flavors I associate with an IPA are present. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall, if this represents mid-80's IPA's, I guess not all things were better back in the day.

Look: honey colored, light foamy head that quickly dissipates to a nice lasting lacing.

Smell: faint citrus notes a top what might most resemble the 80's, the aroma of parties past

Taste: smooth malty flavor mixed with piney notes, smooth finish with lingering bitterness and citrus tones

Feel: crisp and effervescent, well carbonated, maintains fresh feel to the tongue well after being comsumed

The body is a very light golden straw color, very clear with a thin white head. Not getting too much hops on the nose, a nice clean crackery malt comes through, sweet pilsner malt, grassy and slight floral hops, cardboard woodiness, and hint of bitter pine. The mouth feel is very light and crisp, good carbonation throughout, drinks likes a sessionable pilsner or lager. Some citrus comes through in the flavor, along with the floral and spicy pine hops, clean malt characteristics add a sweet backbone to the beer.
