Old Fashioned Lemonade IPAOld Fashioned Lemonade IPA
Notes: Collaboration with Omnipollo

A refreshing drink often associated with childhood nostalgia to others a pop-cultural symbol of emancipation. Whatever the association we teamed up with good old Swedes, Henok and Karl of the fashionable Omnipollo to squeeze out a tasty, tempting and deceivingly well balanced IPA with sweet and sour notes of old-fashioned memories. Perhaps you can taste the dishonesty, it's all over your breath -it's Lemonade.

Evil Twin Brewing "Old Fashioned Lemonade IPA"
12 fl. oz. can with an illegible code starting with "ETLIPA2..."
$4.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: I read the name, as it's written, as "Old Fashioned Lemonade IPA" and thought what the hell is an old fashioned lemonade IPA? I've never even heard of one. Then it dawned on me, it's old fashioned lamonade, not lemonade IPA. Duh.OK, it's poured a very hazy golden-orange beneath a short head of white that dropped almost immediately. That's not good but I can be forgiving on appearance. So what does it smell like? I'll let you guess. It smells like sweet lemonade and grainy malt. On to the flavor... well, no surprises, it's like you physically mixed lemonade with a straightforward IPA. I'm not really even getting hops out of it. Yeah, sure, there's some, but it's not like a hoppy IPA - but then again, why would you waste the hops if you're going to make it a lemonade beer. Of course they could have just made it a little less strong and called it an old fashioned lemonade pale ale which is really what it tastes like. That would not have sold as well. Ohh, I almost forgot, it's a bit tart as well, so you've got sweet and tart and grain and lemon and a little bit of hops backed by a moderate bitterness. You get the hops pretty nicely in the burp. I wouldn't call it complex, it really is like lemonade added into an IPA. In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp. Any more carbonation would probably accentuate the acidity so it's good as it is, and then it's smooth like a lemonade. Nicely done. The only thing I haven't noted so far is that the lemon seems artificial, but at the same time the lemon almost always seems artificial in lemonade unless you get the reals thing, which is rare. Of course, THAT is what I'd call "Old Fashioned Lemonade". In the end this is a pretty decent and refreshing beer. I'd like more hops, but I'd like more hops in almost anything. As a summer beer this is absolutely worth trying.

Pours a hazy bright lemon yellow with a thick white cap that dissipates fairly quickly. Aroma is decidedly lemon forward but also sense some funk. Flavor is all lemon with a touch of sour funkiness that I associate with farmhouse or wild ales. No hop bitterness. Feel is fine but overall this doesn't seem like an IPA to me. Not my cup of lemonade.

My seCANd beer of New Catch-Up Beer Sunday (Week 696) is a recent score from a trusted bottle shop so I am curious if it is back in production. No matter. This one is part of my Go Green! theme, picking up from Brewdog's earlier Hazy Jane. It is all a part of The CANQuest (tm), which will give you your USDA ReCANmended Daily Allowance of madness. Sit back, strap in/on & get ready for the ride!

From the CAN: "A refreshing drink often associated with childhood nostalgia to others a pop-cultural symbol of emancipation. Whatever the association we teamed up with good old Swedes, Henok and Karl of the fashionable Omnipollo to squeeze out a tasty, tempting and deceivingly well balanced IPA with sweet and sour notes of old-fashioned memories. I Crack!ed open the vent & beCAN a slow gentle Glug into the awaiting glass. It started out fairly clear, but as I CANtinued, it beCAN to take on a light haziness & so I stopped what I was doing. This gave me a ChANce to CANduct a vigorous in-glass swirl that raised a brief finger of foamy, fizzy, soapy, tawny head with modest retention. Color was a slightly-hazy Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7). Nose smelled EXTREMELY lemony! OMFG. I LOVE what these guys are doing, especially in CANs, but for an AIPA, it was NOT to style. (Shrugs.) Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium, not watery, but thin for the style. The taste was REALLY tart, VERY lemony & great on a hot, hazy, humid Summer's day, but again, not really to style. Any hops & their inherent bitterness were lost in the noise of the intense citrusy lemon flavor. I liked it, I enjoyed it, but it is going to suffer when I rate to style, as I ultimately must. Finish was dry, tart, refreshing, but not in keeping with the style. YMMV.

Is exactly what I'd expect given the name. The lemon is very present in the nose and taste with the hop acid balancing it all out. The mouthfeel is a balanced but you'd almost want a touch more body/malt; not sure if that would alter the taste much. Well worth it if you like lemon and IPAs - great lawnmower or pool beer.

Picked up an old can from the House of 1,000 beers.
A - Very lively beer hazy golden yellow with an inch plus of fizzy frothy foam.
S - Not getting much lemon just some citrus hops and a touch of sweet malts.
T - Wow now I get the lemon it is pretty balanced with the IPA leaving a citrus hop flavor and some sweet malts in the finish. Wouldn't really call it a "lemonade" but it is an IPA with bright lemon flavor.
M - Pretty crisp and clean with mild tartness and a smooth finish.

Overall this beer is very good again don't go in expecting a very sugary lemonade but do expect a very lemon forward IPA.

This beer pours a orange/golden color. Very murky. The head is white, 2 finger, frothy. Retention is poor.
The nose is a pine/citrus/lemon mix. Interesting aroma.
Taste - well, there's a lot of lemon in this beer. I get it mixed with some pine up front. The backside is really lemony.
Feel is moderate bodied. Tart feeling.
Interesting IPA.

12 oz can poured into a teku

A- A hazy golden copper with a three finger white head

S- Lemons, a little more on the sweet side than the tart side, some piney and floral hops.

T- Lemon candies, slightly tart, touch of honey, floral, some piney hops.

M- Smooth, medium body.

O- A very interesting beer. It works for the most part, kind of reminds my of honey lemon cough drops in a good way.

Comes in a hazy, almost opaque yellow color with a foamy white head that eventually dies down into nothing, leaving little to no lacing.

Smells like powdered lemonade, lemon candy; a bit of crackery malt and faint pineapple.

Tastes like lemonade. Lightly tart with cane sugar sweetness. Big lemon candy vibes. Almost nothing else, save for some crackery malt, hints of hay, and pineapple. Finishes well, though, not really sweet. Very balanced.

Feels medium, moderately carbonated, smooth.

Not really an IPA, in my opinion, but as a shandy or a general alcoholic beverage, it's delicious. Super refreshing.

Got this beer from my bro-in-law. It poured a hazy yellow with white head that is not leaving any lace. The scent had lemon zest. The taste was very fruit leaning. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it's ok.

L-Pours a two and a quarter headed bubbly head. The beer itself is llight and hazy with heavy carbonation. Looks a little like lemonade (hint hint)
S-Very spicy upfront. Piney, grassy and of course, citrusy hops are present. Very fruity, and yeasty. I also get a strong sense of lemon zest.
T-Very juicy! Citrusy lemon pop, with a crisp iced down finish in every sip. It is also just bitter enough to give a satisfying bite.
F-Crisp with a slight amount of thickness.
O-Very great beer! Evil twin has made an extremely tasty and refreshing IPA. The slight bitterness combined with the pronounced hop flavor and spicy notes keep the lemonade honest enough to keep itself a true IPA. Perfect beer for the summe. With that being said, it's surprisingly heavy.

Beautiful pour. Heavy lemon on the nose with a little citrusy hop presence. Very sweet but then again lemonade is right there in the name. Nice and tart. The hop presence is subtle so alot of it is lost with the over powering lemon flavors.

A: Juicy lemons, candied lemon zest, floral hops, light malt sweetness.

A: Bright yellow color, super hazy, with a thick white head that's everlasting.

T: Moderate lemons and candied lemon zest, with moderately light malt sweetness, with very mild hop bitterness and juicy finish.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, very smooth mouth-feel.

O: Interesting; the beer has a great floral, candid lemon quality and the soft-serve really show off the beer's aromatics.

I got a can of Evil Twin and Omnipollo's Old Fashioned Lemonade IPA last week for $3.59 at The Lager Mill. Since I tried the pink lemonade version it's only right I try this one too, so lets see how it goes. 2017 Vintage. Poured from a 12oz can into an IPA glass.

A- The can looks good, it has a nice design to it and it's a little eye catching. It poured a hazy golden color that took on more of a brighter yellow color when held to the light and it had a finger and half worth of creamy white head that died down to a thin a ring that stayed till the end and it left just a little bit of spotty lacing behind. This is a pretty nice looking beer, I have no complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a medium amount of sweetness with a fruit lemon aromas being the first to show and with some more sweetness it had a lemonade like aroma to it that goes into a weird floral hoppy aromas making it a little perfume like and it's followed by a little bit of stonefruit and green hop like aromas. Up next comes a slight bit of doughy yeast that goes into the malts which impart some pale malts, grainy, light bread and light sweet malt like aromas. This beer has a nice aroma, but floral perfume like aroma clashes with it a little.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma, but more intense and it starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the lemons still being the first to show up and this time it has more of a candied and sweet lemon aspects that give it more of a lemonade flavor and it's followed by the hops which impart most of the same aspects that they did in the aroma without that weird floral and perfume like aspects. Up next comes a little bit of doughy yeast and that leads into the malts which impart all the same aspects that they did in the aroma and on the finish there's pretty much no bitterness with a medium amount of tartness taking it's place and it has a sweet lemonade and light hoppy aftertaste. This is a nice tasting beer, but I wish it was more balanced, the sour lemon flavors overpower the IPA base.

M- Fairly smooth, slightly mouth puckering, a little crisp, a little refreshing, medium bodied with a slightly lower amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is pretty nice and it works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a nice beer and solid example to the style, but to me it's the lack of balance that held this beer back from being as good as it could, it was more sour beer than IPA. This beer had ok drinkability, one is the perfect amount for me, it might wear on me after more than that. What I like the most about this beer is the lemonade aspects, they were nice and lived up to the lemonade part. What I like the least about this beer is the lack of balanced, I need more IPA flavors and less sour beer intensity. I might get this beer again, but not if I was looking for an IPA and I would only recommend it if you want something more sour beer like than IPA like. All in all I liked this beer, but I didn't love it and I think it would be better if they beefed up the hop profile. It's not a favorite beer from this brewery and it's a solid example of the style. Nice job guys, but with some more work and hop and this beer could be taken to the next level.

Decent beer. Way better than a shandy, but couldn't help think shandy the entire time while drinking it.
It did have nice sweet and sour notes with some glorious hops mixed in. Very drinkable. Would be a smashing summer beer.

A 330ml can with a best before date of 10th January 2018. Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass.

Appearance: A hazy milky dark orange colour with a one finger white head that dissipated quickly and left no lacing.

Aroma: Unripe mango, lemon zest, lychee and lemonade.

Taste: Tart, lightly sour, lemonade and candied lime zest.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with high carbonation.

Overall: This was quite tasty and refreshing, and definitely has the hard lemonade taste but hardly seems like an IPA.

This is not an IPA. It's a Belgian white. Smells like it. Tastes like it, if you squeezed in a lemon. I drink a lot of beer, and you could fool me with this one. Like, one of those horrible, reprehensible golden stouts. It's a citrusy wolf in sheep's clothing. Good IPA for prudish chicks on the beach who don't like "hops".

Drank from a 12 fl. oz. can
Batch 11
Served in a tulip
Thanks to my friends Cassandra and Dave for this thoughtful birthday gift.

Hazy, straw yellow appearance. The body was topped by an inch-tall, bubbly white crown that quickly dissolved. No lacing whatsoever.

The nose reminded me of a cross between watered down lemonade and a watered down IPA. Lemon Pledge also came to mind. There was a fair amount of sweetness too. Bit of earthy hops in the background (just enough to remind me that this was indeed a beer). As the liquid warmed, the lemon notes intensified.

Lemon came through even stronger in the flavor. Lots of sugary sweetness up front. This definitely tasted like lemonade! Some rind-like tartness appeared as the beer moved along the palate. More sweetness on the back end. Notes of lemon peel and a subtle earthy hop bitterness rounded things out on the finish. Pithy, bitter, lemon rind notes and a cloying, simple syrup-like sweetness lingered after the swallow. Melted Italian lemon ice came to mind.

The mouthfeel was lighter bodied for the style. A fairly aggressive, larger bubbled effervescence gave the liquid a frothy, somewhat prickly quality on the palate. At 7% ABV, the alcohol was very well buried. This, unfortunately, might have been the most impressive aspect of the beer.

I tend to enjoy kitschy, adjunct-infused beers, but this one was even too much for me. A lemon-infused IPA might have been enjoyable, but this "lemonade IPA" tasted like cloyingly sweet lemonade with a smattering of hops tossed in. I could probably stomach this beer in small quantities on a brutally hot day, but otherwise I would definitely pass on it. Also, for the price ($18 for four twelve ounce cans), I would recommend spending half the amount on a six-pack of shandies or even Mike's Hard Lemonade.

Poured from a can into a pint glass.

Look: Hazy, faded, old yellow. Nice egg shell creamy head. Lacing on glass is impressive.

Smell: Grapefruit, lemon zest, lemon candy, herbal citrus notes.

Taste: Candied grapefruit, aspirin-y mid palate. Dry. Not too balanced for all the citrus. Gets pretty tart halfway through the beer. It tastes more like a beer than lemon-influenced, in a good way. I was afraid this would be too sweet but it just tastes overhopped and has too much citrus. Not the worst thing in the world.

Feel: Medium bodied, drinkable, not too heavy.

Overall: I'm not sure they accomplished the "old fashioned lemonade" feel here, something seems off in that regard and I can't put my finger on it. Regardless, interesting beer and worth trying if you encounter it on a tap list or at the store.

Extremely hazy, murky bright yellow color with some yellowish foam. Aroma is really fruity, citrusy mostly, like orange juice and tangerines but also a hint of banana. The hops are also present in the background. Taste is sweetish tart at first with lemon flavor, gets more astringent towards the finish, also quite dry on the aftertaste. There is also a weird dirty rag note throughout. Heavy body, soft carbonation. An interesting beer but it has some flaws and the flavors are not that well integrated.

i have criticized omnipollo for being far too liberal in calling beer "ipa" in the past, and i will stand by and even double down on that sentiment here. this is a far cry from anything a reasonably educated consumer would consider to be an india pale ale, the hops and the bitterness just arent there, and its far too flavored to really fit that mold. its misleading, and its a little frustrating, but, at the same time, i dont want this beer to be any more hoppy than it already is, and in fact, more flavor is the last thing this beer needs. for me though, its refreshing, but its too strong for that, and it really straight up tastes like country time lemonade powder was just dumped into a pale ale. it has a real artificial lemon aspect, and even the color and shade look like an overmixed glass of that stuff we grew up on. the dusty powder that swirls around when you open the lid is exactly what i smell and taste in this beer. usually i like evil twin for pushing the limits but not hitting the gimmick level. the al pastor beer comes to mind, along with countless others, but this is past that point, and feels cheap and forced to me. a step back for them with their flavored stuff in my opinion. tangy and tart at the same time, lemony but not real, and not at all hoppy for something dubbed "ipa". good and interesting, but i am glad i went with one can instead of the (very expensive) four pack. as much as i didnt like this very much, i am definitely still going to try the pink lemonade version...

This beer pours a slightly hazy deep yellow with an average head. The aroma features strongly sour lemon juice and lemon peel. tart pineapple, and papaya. The flavor is really very reminiscent of lemonade - there is a broad but balanced tartness, and strong flavors of lemon peel and flesh, with tart tropical notes. The mouthfeel is full with fluffy carbonation. Overall this is a nice beer - it manages to be both very much an IPA, and very like lemonade.

L: Hazy yellow, white finger width head has good retention.
