Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
This is our take on a classic cocktail with an Asian twist and a cool name. An IPA with apricot and a slim hint of umami. It's crisp, fruity and perhaps full-bodied.

Basically marmalade for hop heads, Evil Twin latches on to the fruit forward theme of summer while also delivering on the promise of citrus, herb and bitterness from hops. There's only so much that you can squeeze into an IPA, isn't there?

But Sumo in a Sidecar doesn't agree. Chocked full of apricots, the beer swoons about the nose with a rich orange, marmalade and nearly candied scent. With underlying citrus aromas, a floral perfume works with the fruit additions seamlessly. Heavily hazy, the beer shows suspended fruit pulp upon an orange and golden mat finish. As creamy white froth builds, the beer looks like a snow globe. Sweet to taste, the beer's light caramelized malts and honey impressions leave the taste of honeysuckle and orange blossoms on the front of the tongue.

As the hops intensify on the middle palate in true IPA form, the sweetness begins to waver. Never achieving total dryness, the residual taste of apricots leave tracks of marmalade and jam on the tongue. And as the pink grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango and cantaloup flavors of hops complement the fruit, the session remains sweeter than usual. Offset by stern hop bitterness, the finish is of strong and fragrant citrus and tropical fruit peels, chive and fresh pine shavings for a beer that tilts to the bitter side, but not overly dominant.

Medium bodied and medium flavored, the taste of apricots is as much of an asset to complexity as it is a distraction for the IPA buried underneath. Its a crisp, clean and refreshing taste that leaves a deep and bittersweet marmalade on the finish once more. A long and bitter aftertaste remains of fruit peel, pith and rind along with those herbal accompaniments.

Poured from a 16 oz. can into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a bright golden orange. Moderate amount of bubbles and a solid finger of white head that settles into a thin patchy layer.

Smell: A juicy and piney hop driven aroma with a scent of apricot, citrus, and pine. Upfront scent of apricot. Citrus hop scent of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, and tangerine along with some pineapple. Earthy hop hints of pine resin. Malt hints of grains and cracker along with yeast. A pretty nice aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a juicy and piney hop forward taste with notes of apricot, citrus, and pine. Good taste of apricot. Citrus hop notes of orange peel, grapefruit, mango, and tangerine with some pineapple. Earthy hop notes of ripe pine resin. Background malt notes of caramel, grains, and cracker with some yeast. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Juicy, oily, and drying.

Overall: A very good fruited IPA. Good tropical fruit and pine flavor.

16 oz can with a Batch #004 stamp.
Pours with an amber body that has visible carbonation despite some haze. A good head leaves a partial coat of sticky lacing.
Fruity, floral and lightly herbal aroma. The flavor is also fruity yet different than the aroma suggests. Moderate bitterness for style.
Medium-full body with medium+ carbonation.

Pours a very effervescent gold with 3+ fingers of rocky cream colored head, & floaties. Decent head retention & lacing, plenty of floaties

S: Apricot, some citrus late to the party

T: Follows the nose, some pomelo & dryness as well up front. Apricot jammy sweetness builds as this warms, along with dryness, along with a little mandirin orange & pomelo. Finishes dry, jammy with some sweet & sour citrus ( mandirin & sour orange juice )

MF: Medium body, fairly firm carbonation, lovely balance

Pretty drinkable, not huge on apricot in this style, but this well-executed & in balance

Bought a can at the Beer Shop in East Longmeadow, MA. The beer has a murky yellow appearance with some nice lacing on the sides and a thin head. Could more sense an orange citrus and malt aroma over the apricot as advertised. Taste was good by following the aromas with some orange flavoring citrus. Medium body. Overall, not bad; definitely a good appearance.
