Imperial stout brewed with lactose and with vanilla and coffee added

A few times in the history of craft beer it has happened that a highly praised beer maker rises beyond mortal stardom into a higher godly league. Usually the recipe to become such a divine hero you need crazy juice skills, a fake Minnesota dialect and a cool and exotic sounding name like Jean-Claude - it's even more JCs - an affogato style imperial stout.

16 oz can from Tavour. Stunned from the get-go. Silky black pour, tiny beige creamy head, oil slick. Sweet, roasty aroma, chocolate. Taste is mildly sweet, roasty, chocolate. Super slick and smooth, creamy. Sublime. Awesome.

Shared 440 ml can. Black colour, minimal brown head. Aroma of roast malts, lactose, molasses, vanilla and coffee - kind of sickly sweetish. Very sweet flavour, with the same elements as the aroma. Alcoholic. Too sweet.

More sweet than I like, but can't really score it down much if that is the intention of the brewer and it is clear from the label. Looks and smells amazing. If no added lactose I suspect it would be close to a 4.5 from me. If sweet stouts float your boat it is definitely worth trying!

Pour is jet black with a huge thick deep cinnamon head. Great retention
Nose is coffee, vanilla, dark roasted malts, chocolate.
Taste follows. Creamy chocolate, vanilla, touch of coffee, tobacco, leather, ash.
Thick, creamy, viscous body. Lingering fudge, latte.

Got this from some website a while back.

From a 500ml can into a snifter
Brewed at Westbrook
Brewed with lactose and with vanilla and coffee added

APPEARANCE: Pours our clear black and yields a two finger, medium looking, creamy, dark tan head with great retention. Black body with some carbonation evident. Head slowly recedes to a full, thick, creamy cap, then down to a splotchy, swirly ring and wisp. Ring remains leaving touches of lacing down the glass as it empties. Good looking stout.

SMELL: Plenty of lactose sugars, vanilla cream, milk chocolate with hints of roasted coffee on the nose. Butterscotch aromas as well. Bold and plenty lactose forward.

TASTE: Lactose sugars, vanilla cream, butterscotch and toffee sweetness, then some creamy coffee at the swallow. A touch of alcohol too. Bold and lingering finish is full of lactose, butterscotch, vanilla cream and milk chocolate sweetness, coffee flavors and some roasted bitterness on the palate. Flavorful with plenty of lactose sweetness.

PALATE: Medium-fuller body and medium carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, goes down sooth with a bit of a burn and finishes somewhat mouth-coating. A touch of heat lingers.

OVERALL: This is a really well-made beer, like a lot of these Even More Jesus variants are, though I will admit the lactose is perhaps a touch stronger than I’d like, which probably gets in the way of the coffee additions, which I would definitely appreciate more. Regardless, the engineering on this is great and it’s plenty aromatic and flavorful. If you’re a lactose stout fan, you’re be pleased with this one. Give it a shot if you have access to it. Cheers!

16 ounce can into a snifter. Canned 3/22/18, had 2/25/19.

Pours near black and opaque, with a half inch head of brown foam and light foamy cling. Aromas of coffee, vanilla, malt, chocolate, cocoa, some lactose, malted milk balls, light caramel, some molasses, a little raisin, light smoke. Flavors of vanilla, chocolate, coffee, malt, lactose, cocoa, light caramel and smoke, a little molasses and fudge. Some bitterness midway through the finish. Smooth, creamy, a solid full body, well carbonated.

All the add- ins show wonderfully, every sip is a new adventure. Not as roasty as Even More Jesus, but that’s not a negative as this has a great feel. Truly like a coffee drink, wish I had more than the one can. Buy this if you can.

Simply amazing stout. Smells of coffee and chocolate. In the mouth it is thick, heavy and smooth. Sweet with coffee, vanilla forward and a hint of bitterness on the back end. One of the best stouts I have ever had.

Dark molasses looking beer. It smells like molasses and very sweet. Alcohol is hidden in the aroma. Sweet, chocolatey goodness. No alcohol noticed in the taste. Mouthfeel is slightly syrupy but not a bad thing. Smooth meet smooth. Delicious and over the top. Homerun Eviltwin. I dig the sweetness on my tongue. Canned 04/10/18 so it's got some age on it. Reportedly Retired. Bummer. Should have bought two.
