22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled in 12/2018. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1 finger dense and rocky dark tan head with awesome retention, that reduces to a thin spotty lace cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, maple syrup, molasses, vanilla, toffee, cream, fudge, brownie/cake batter, marshmallow, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, and dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of licorice, raisin, prune, cherry, fig, date, smoke, char, leather, tobacco, herbal, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Some increasing booze in the aromas as it warms, but not overwhelming. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and maple/bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, maple syrup, molasses, vanilla, toffee, cream, fudge, brownie/cake batter, marshmallow, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, and dark/brown bread; with lighter notes of licorice, raisin, prune, cherry, fig, date, smoke, char, leather, tobacco, herbal, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Very mild herbal, roast, char bitterness; and bourbon/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, maple syrup, molasses, vanilla, toffee, cream, fudge, brownie/cake batter, marshmallow, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, dark/brown bread, licorice, dark fruit, light smoke/char, leather, tobacco, herbal, and yeast/roast/toast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and maple/bourbon barrel flavors; with a solid roasted bitter/sweet and bourbon/oak spiciness balance; with zero cloying/acrid flavors after the finish. Slightly increasing dryness from lingering roast bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness. Light-medium carbonation and very full body; with a very creamy, silky, velvety, and rich mouthfeel that was insane. Slightly slickness, chalky roast, and bourbon/oak tannins. Mild increasing warmth of 12%, with no barrel booze lingering after the finish. Overall this is an insane barrel aged imperial stout. All around amazing complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt and maple/bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the huge ABV, with the mildly bitter/tannic/drying finish. Amazing well rounded rich/decadent malt complexity with perfect barrel integration/balance. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering bitter/tannin dryness. A highly amazing offering, and world class style example. This was a lot less boozy/drying on barrels than the base beer, with the Elijah Craig variation.
