On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Dark black throughout, no clarity, thick, viscous, heavy, and substantial looking. Gorgeous. This leaves a bit of sticky web-like lace down the glass.

Rich aroma of dark chocolate, roast, a bit of cream, earthy vanilla, and a hint of anise. Complete.

The chocolate flavor in this beer is phenomenal. The chocolate flavor is rich, bitter, sweet, and earthy all in one. There's a bit of dark fruit, sweet vanilla, and anise character as well, but it's minimal and only a complementary accent.

Medium to full bodied with low to moderate carbonation.

This was incredibly tasty, and surprisingly so. Easily, the best Evil Twin beer I've had to date.

16oz can from Brewers Haven. Dark brown pour, wispy beige head forms ring around the glass. Chocolaty aroma, roasted malts, anise. Taste is sweet and chocolaty, burned toast, hint of licorice with some milky notes. Smooth and creamy. Not much apparent with the ABV.

Look: For a beer; it pours just about the darkest shade of black I have ever seen in my life - with a one finger chocolate brown head of finely laced foam. Little to no head retention, fizzles away within a minute. This is literally pitch black, completely opaque.

Aroma: Blackstrap molasses, chocolate covered raisins, red figs, caramel & treacle, bitter tobacco / shoe polish (in a pleasant way), red apples, Columbian coffee, model airplane glue (yep), sweet maraschino cherries, plums and hot chocolate. Very inviting aroma. 5/5.

Taste: Initially; the biscuity, yet rich and complex flavors of chocolate malt come together to form this sort of graham cracker, chocolate brownie type experience that is so rich, fruity and supple - - but at no time cloying or overbearing. It's evened out and balanced by a vinous, almost tawny port wine flavor of raisin and maraschino cherry. Midpalate, flavors of dark chocolate - complemented by a bitter; yet paradoxically sweet tobacco take center stage. It ends on fruity - malty - flavors of roasted Columbian coffee and treacle. A warming, alcoholic sensation blankets the entire experience with a sort of medicinal, floral hint of bitter hops. Somewhere in between it all notes of roasted campfire marshmellows and s'mores. Fades out with very strong flavors of molasses and crème brulee.

Feel: A lot of people would find this too heavy and rich. But for the initiated, I consider this perfect for the ABV and style. Mid-heavy weight that is still creamy and smooth - lightly carbonated.

Overall: Everyone's taste is subjective and I don't mean to gush over this beer, but wow... I was not expecting this to be this good. Maybe it's just because I had low expectations after having had bad experiences with ET stouts in the past - but I'm very impressed.

500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 10.4%. Pitch black colour, big brown head. Nice aroma of roasted malts, coffee, dark chocolate and vanilla. The flavour has loads of roasted malts, notes of strong coffee, dark bitter chocolate and vanilla, bitter hops in the finish. Good stuff!

16oz can

Black look, khaki head, amber edged. Smell is the main attraction for me: like a bowl of brownie batter with a shot of good bourbon next to it. It tastes good initially, when very cold, but as it warms a ton of dark fruit comes out, along with leather and smoke and cacao nibs - all undesirable flavors for me. It's also much much too sweet, as most of these are. Some decent flavors in here I must admit, almost tastes like a fine cigar at points, I just wish it wasn't so sugary. I had to choke most of this down and it ended a drain pour

I like this in small doses, this was borderline excellent at times, but is just way too sweet and doesn't taste that good

Undated bottle but I think likely from 2015 or 2016, stored at cellar temp.
Pours opaque black with scant half finger of reddish tan head.
Aroma has notes of molasses, caramel, vanilla, and dark chocolate. Milder dark fruit note and some earthy hops.
Taste is moderately sweet with again the molasses and vanilla sending an opening flavour salvo. There is some dark chocolate, a bit of caramel, and a definite earthy coffee/char bitterness in back with a mildly boozy warmth.
Medium full mouth feel - smooth with a warming bittersweetness, leaning more into the sweet territory. Been too long to remember what this was like fresh, but very decent at this age.

2015 bottle (I think) poured into a Founders Brewing Co snifter

A: Pours nearly black with a frothy khaki tan head that settles to a light layer and leaves some nice lacing.

S: Big molasses, kinda umami, roasty, coffee, char, earthy, vanilla, dark chocolate, burnt sugar, and a touch of spice.

T: Roasty, coffee, a touch of dark chocolate, solid hit of molasses and vanilla, earthy spice, a little of char, umami undertones, with burnt sugar and light spice on the back end.

M: Full body, moderate carbonation, some creaminess, and very faint warmth (10.4% is very well hidden).

O: Did some reorganizing in my cellar and decided this had spent enough time in there. Glad I decided to crack into it. It has aged beautifully. Great complexity of flavors that progresses as it warms and even throughout the sip. I'd love to try this fresh if they decide to brew it again and get a better idea of how it's changed.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a glass - did not make note of the type. Consumed and reviewed on 9/30/16. 2015 vintage bottling.

A: Very dark brown and opaque, with a low amount of visible carbonation. Forms a thin tan head that fades almost instantly.

S: Cacao nibs, vanilla, and drying tobacco. Roasted malts. Hints of black licorice, toffee, and smoke.

T: Dark chocolate and cacao nibs, roasted malts with a fair amount of bitterness. Vanilla sweetness and more drying tobacco. Some toffee sweetness. Lesser notes of caramel, and a light smokiness to the toasted malt body. It's like malted milk balls coated in extra chocolate and vanilla wafers. A light hop and roast bitterness at the end with more cacao nibs, and another wave of mild char on the exhale.

M: Quite full-bodied though not much in the way of residual sugars – a European take on the Imperial Stout. The alcohol flavors are dangerously well-hidden. Low carbonation sensation overall, but about average for style.

O: Well, this really needs to warm up from the refrigerator quite a bit before you drink it. As a personal opinion – this isn't even close to my favorite imperial stout. But it’s a solid, well-made heavy-bodied stout in 12 oz bottles. No adjuncts or flavorings, no barrel-aging - but good, with complex flavors. Just not a personal favorite.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: black body with a thin layer of fizzy dark-tan foam. The color is great, but the head could use a little more staying power.

Smell: sweet with notes of molasses and raisin; it is also bready, almost like a kvass. Not complex, but good.

Taste: bready, sweet, and just a little bit roasty, with some of that good raisin/tobacco character. This thing really reminds me of a huge, slightly roasty kvass, it's got so much bready character. This is not a bad thing!

Mouthfeel: medium-rich body with a relatively low level of carbonation. Not super duper creamy, but quite smooth; I like it.

Overall: imperial kvass, maybe? Weird. An interesting beer; I wouldn't want to have it all the time but it is definitely a solid brew.

April 7th, 2015 - This is my first tilt at Evil Twin Brewing, which has developed an important reverence in tandem with its counterpart, Mikeller. This is the Soft DK, sure black and with just a small wreath of foam around the edge of the glass. It's served in a chalice, so I have a hard time getting at the aroma, but it has a deep and lingering character of chestnut. On the tongue it is a different beast altogether, thick and syrupy, crawling low to the palate and intense. The taste is moderate and not too sweet, expressing dark fruits like fig, but in a restrained and powerful fashion. I don't know what style this technically is, bit it tastes a great deal like a Belgian Strong Ale, but smoother, thicker and denser than anything I've had with a monk on it.

L — Pours a very dark black body with a small light brown head produced with aerated pour. Some retention and lacing
S — Nougat, dark chocolate, dark fruit, molasses, brown sugar, hint of maple… you can really smell the sweetness
T — Has a strong roasty chocolatey char presence. Good amount of molasses sweetness and banana, although not as much as expected. Coffee character is stale
F — Big mouthfeel, medium- carb. Too thin for the ABV, lacks viscosity
O — Description on the bottle is pretty misleading. Much less desserty and much more bitter/charry. Still fairly decent. Horrible name. Couldn’t get the idea of drinking liquid feces out of my head

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a tulip

L: Dark inky black pour... 2 fingers of thin tannish head. Falls fast with a nice rim of lacing.

S: Dark sugars and cocoa... espresso... charred malts and grains.

T/F: Follows the nose. Sweet and dark... rich and silky on the tongue. Strong mix of chocolate covered espresso beans and burned sugars. Dark fruits like plum and baked raisin... could perhaps use a little more bitterness to balance the sweet. Rather decadent. The finish is sweet and roasty. Warming... and hides the ABV up until the point that it doesn't.

O: A solid Imperial Stout... bordering on dessert. Great complex flavors that play nicely together... has most of what I look for in the style. Could use a little more bittering but that feels kind of like nitpicking since I'm enjoying this one so much.

10.4% ABV, 12 oz bottle. No ingredients or specs per the website or bottle. Pours out to a clear dark black, forming a large dark brown head with excellent retention and lacing. Carbonation is mild, ~2.0 carbs or so. The nose is ripe with prunes, raisins, black walnut, soy sauce, chocolate. The mouthfeel is slick, oily, dense bodied. The taste is a recap of the nose, lots of prunes, raisins and black walnut. Bitterness is mild, a little earthy in the finish, not overly acidic despite the large amount of roasted malts, warming, a bit harsh in the finish worsens as it warms, Overall on the sweet side. Not oxidized, slight fusels,

Overall, not a very enjoyable experience. Too sweet, too warm, too harsh. Some may like this impy stout, but I don't.
