Evil Twin Yin, "Imperial Taiji Stout", 11.2-oz bottle bought at Whole Foods Bowery Beer Room for $6.99. The Evil Twin Brewing line is just now getting distribution in the US, this was the first time I had seen the bottles (imported by Twelve Percent LLC)
Appearance: Served in my Sierra snifter Yin pours thick and black like a toxic spill in a Superfund site, gargling all the way down to the bottom of the glass and producing a beautiful mocha-colored head of a classic one-finger size. Doesn't last long, though.
Smell: Smoke, burnt wood- Oskar Blues Ten Fidy comes to mind. Sort of a forest after a fire. Some graininess and horse urine at the end. Nice opaque woodiness all around, sort of a barrel reminiscence.
Taste: Roasty bitterness. Hints of chocolate fill the mouth and leave a lingering sensation. A tad of booze at the end. Sugars. Comes across almost as a regular stout...
Mouthfeel: Medium body, flavor and carbonation. A little lacking, particularly for a 10% Imperial Stout, but correct anyways. Smooth throughout, with a pleasant dry and bitter end.
Overall: Very drinkable! Absolutely not boozy, well balanced and approachable. Needs more body and else, though.
Obviously I would love to try this together as the black & tan the brewers intended, along with the "Yan" Imperial IPA. As it is, on its own, "Yin" is an enjoyable stout, but nothing you would want to pay $6.99 for.

I Love this beer. Got this with the Yang so that I could make a badass black and tan. Lots of dark chocolate, caramel, and dark fruits. It has a nice sweetness to it as well but the hops are pretty noticeable in this beer. Head retention was awesome and poured a light coffee color which notched all down the glass. Its a very impressive beer and its totally worth the 7.50 I paid for it.

Poured into a tulip glass. Pours black with a thin, tan head that doesn't hang around for very long.. The beer is opaque with no light shining through the edges. The aroma is of dark roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, molasses, anise, and some alcohol. I also get some hops, which adds some piney scent. The taste is very roasty with piney hops, bitter coffee, dark chocolate, and anise. The alcohol is there as well as some dark fruit notes. The body is full and thick with moderate carbonation. The finish leaves a roasty aftertaste. This is a very good beer.

Poured a black color with an average frothy brown head that lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted chocolate malt, earthy hop and alcohol aroma. Heavy bittersweet roasted black sweet coffee and dark chocolate flavor with a heavy bittersweet and small alcohol bite finish of long duration. Full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a near standout beer.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a nearly pitch black color. The head stands tall at three fingers high, khaki shaded. Texture-wise, it seems more soapy than creamy, but still, this has good retention for a 10% beer. Some spotty patches of lacing are left behind.
S: This has a lot of licorice for my tastes. Seriously, a lot. Apart from that, this beer still brings the roast, still brings the chocolate, and even brings something resembling peat. There's even some slight citrusy hops floating around. Even with all the aniseed, this has a very appealing aroma.
T: I said the aroma brings the roast. Well, that's not the case here - because it REALLY brings the roast, like a charred sledgehammer. The roasted notes are mainly clustered near the finish; before that, it starts with a combination of fruitiness and licorice. It also finishes with slight wisps of chocolate and booze (just enough to add to the experience, mind). I'm really enjoying how charred the roasted malts are in particular.
M: It starts off really dry finishing in spite of the creamy body, and combined with its slightly thin body, gives it great drinkability. The finish becomes becomes a lot wetter as more is consumed - it's almost like said feature is an omen for me to stop slamming this. Too bad, because I absolutely adore a slammable imperial stout (Black Albert, anyone?) Carbonation is medium.
O: Make no mistake, this is really damn good. A bit pricey for me to purchase this frequently, though. Highly recommended for roast lovers.
