Picked this up for around 3 bucks single at Vintage Estate.
A - Very deep dark black stout with just a 1/4 inch of head deep mocha in color that dissipates rather quickly.
S - More roasty that smokey to tell you the truth. Some licorice and coffee roasts all around
T - Smoke is pretty nice mixes well with the roasted malts and leave you with a slight hoppy bitterness in the finish. Anise is also there but mixed in which I can take in small doses.
M - Quite smooth drinkable stout with a medium to heavy body

Overall I am glad I picked this up and remember someone calling this a "licking of ashtray" beer and avoided but it's pretty good. Still not as good as "Even more Jesus" but still a nice stout.

The aroma is smokey, sure, it's just not massively smoky (bear in mind I'm drinking this after a Schlenkerla marzen). The smoke character is also subtly different to that one - here, it takes on more of a peaty tone than a woodsy one. There is also an impressive amount of brown sugar, dark chocolate, and roasted malt. There's no surprise to the flavor profile, as it starts off fairly smoky (again, more peat than bacon). The middle has a nice touch of cherry, and it finishes with some roast, Irish cream, and dark chocolate. I really enjoy the flavor profile, but it needs a touch more "oomph" to achieve greatness. On the other hand, it's quite light and easygoing for nearly 9% - nor does it rely on a wimpy texture to achieve the relative drinkability. I'd even call this a bit dangerous. This isn't Evil Twin's best stout, but it's definitely tasty.

3.64/5: Not just good for an ashtray, but good period

Poured a dark brown from a bottle into a pint glass, thin brown head with light lacing. Very subdued smell, but slightly smoky. Taste is earthy and smoky with a bit of chocolate. It is not bad.

Poured into pint.
Opaque black beer with 2-finger tan head, moderate retention.
Smell - smoked, bacon, coffee, licorice.
Taste - not very smoked, coffee, tobacco, slightly acidic, licorice.
Medium body, soft carbonation.
Not enough smokiness for me.

Oh fuuu yes. It's so rare I come across a smoked beer or rauchbier with actually enough smoke for my liking, but this one does not disappoint. I will definitely revisit this and do a full review in the future.

The only thing I'm not loving is I swear the nose is reminiscent of green olives.

This beer pours pitch black with a one finger coffee with cream colored head. Retention is solid and there are a few spots of lacing. Smell is smokiness, roasted malt and coffee. Taste is the same. Feel is medium and slick. Overall a very enjoyable beer. Not on the same level as the Evil Twin stouts, but still very good.

Poured into a narrow ale glass: color is black, head is tan, presents about 1/2 inch thick then dissipates to thin top and ring with some lacing on the glass.

Smell is mostly roasted malts, touch of chocolate, then some espresso and grinds, lighter smoke comes in feintly. Nice smelling but not too smoky.

Taste is clean, solid roast, espresso, feint smoke but not distinctive.

Mouthfeel is pleasant, a bit crisp but not overcarbonated and not cloying or taxing on the tongue.

Overall, solid and nice tasting beer but the smoke character is light.

Poured into tulip glass. It pours jet black with a thick, mocha-colored head and lacing. Although there is some smokiness to the smell, it wasn't as strong as I anticipated. It also smells of burnt coffee. The taste is more smoky than the smell but it blends with roasted malt, burnt coffee grounds, tobacco, and dark chocolate. There are also hints of licorice and vanilla. It is quite bitter at the finish and it leaves a fairly bitter aftertaste. This porter is medium in body (approaching a stout in its viscosity) and carbonation and its 8.9% ABV is well-masked. It is surprisingly smooth and easy to drink. Overall, this is an interesting and tasty porter. It would pare well with a hearty meal.

Carmel colored head when poured into q glass, great smokey coffee taste with a smooth mouth feel and smokey kick at the back of the throat. Not as good as their soft DK, but right under it in my list. Great smokey porter!

Enjoyed from the 12 oz bottle in a snifter via a friend at work---Thanks Justin!

Pours a muddy brownish black with a nice light tan head of foam that settles to a light ring with a thin pool and excellent lacing. Nose of medium charred malts of chocolate, light anise, and a medium strong amount of campfire smoke. Flavors surpass the nose with rich deeply roasted chocolate malts on all sides, subtle vanilla and light notes of licorice spread from the middle to the rear of the taste with a good dose of smoke that is rounding and within the limits of civility compared to many within the style. Warming alcohol presents itself on the back with low carbonation and a slick coating mouth feel that is rich and full. Another solid brew from a fantastic brewer.

This one begs for a fine cigar and a warm fireplace.

Cheers

12 oz bottle poured into a 9 oz Libbey Embassy snifter. Pours dark, inky brown with short head of khaki foam; a fringe persists with minimal lacing. Complex, smoky aroma stars - charred wood, slightly savory smoke and plenty of roasted malt. Dark, roasted malt continues in the taste with slight savory notes (soy?), hints of dark fruit, tobacco smoke, and crisp bitterness. Medium, creamy body - lighter than its color or aroma suggest - with light carbonation. A basic stout highlighting some nice smoked malt character.

Poured out black with a nice 1 finger of head. The aroma is of smoke and roasted malts. Flavor is smoke, all I can think of is sitting around a camp fire and breathing in the smoke. I don't really get anything else from this beer. To be honest this is the first smoked porter I have had. I think it is made well just not a beer at this point that I enjoyed very much. Evil Twin makes some great stuff. Have a great day my friends.

Smoking! Almost pitch black with a tan head that stays quite firm down the glass. The aroma is smoky with dark roast and a hint of vanilla. The mouthfeel is full bodied with some smoke on the tongue and full blooded malt on to the fore. Hoppy finish shows it is more of a stout than a porter, but it is still very tasty.

Poured into a Dogfish traditional oversized snifter. Bottleneck says 345:14, so almost a year old.

A- Pours a 99% opaque black color with a 1/4 inch medium brown head that retains a bit before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a half sheet of sheer surface foam. Resilient lacing leaves a solid ring behind.

S- Big smoke presence in the aroma with some slightly sweet vanilla/chocolate notes accompanying.

T- Has more of that honey barbecue smokey character rather than that burnt, ashy quality. A bit of booze plus some char and roast. There's a tad bit of sweetness but the smoke and roasted malt reign supreme on this one. Chocolaty aftertaste.

M- Slightly creamy with medium carbonation and a full body.

O- Would really like to see what a 2 or 3 years would do to this beer since it's still pretty smoky and bold in flavor after less than a year of age on it.

Jet-Black like gasoline. If you like the Laphroaig whiskey, like smoked ham and cured meats, this is the beer for you. Mildly bitter, and sharp alcoholic flavors. Slight coffee and tastes like burnt ends of baby back ribs. This one is very new for me--I've never had a smoked porter before. Don't look for anything milky like the left-hand milk stouts (or the kentucky bourbon) this one is a lot more sassier. Great if you enjoy good amounts of peatiness in a beer. I'm not there yet, so I could take/leave.

Pitch black with a copper tinge and topped with a half finger head of chocolate milk colour.

Smoke, chocolate, sweet dark fruits, a slight peat quality. There also some garlic and steel.

Amazingly light in taste for the colour, chocolate, steel and a hint of potted meat or hot dog, less smokiness than I'd expected.

Smoothly covers alcohol but you feel the burn in the throat. Oily, a little foamy carbonation.

Found at Beer Lab in Chiang Mai. Drank Oct. 3rd, 2015. Little disappointed based on expectations and price, but certainly covers its alcohol. Not the smokiness I wanted either.

Fairly smoky, dark roast malt notes, and dark cocoa in aroma.

A bit phenolic, bandaid flavor, with undertones of smoke, dark chocolate, and roast malt. Not overly bitter, but I think this has some age on it.

More than just smokey, actually tastes and smells like an ashtray...the dark malts are there, and tasty, but the ashtray flavor and aroma just really weren't my thing

Poured into a tulip glass, color is almost black, foam is a toffee light brown with great retention. Mouthfeel is a soft, yet lively carbonation. Tasting dark fruits, chocolate, and earthy minerals with subtle smoke and spice on the finish. Smoke isn't as significant as the label indicates, but overall a nicely crafted stout with good flavor and mouthfeel.

The name says it all. Both smells and tastes like you poured a carbonated beer into a cigar ashtray, then added a couple band aids for an antiseptic flavor(new ones, not used...if that matters to you), then poured into a glass. There are some slight coffee notes if you search for them, but it's pretty tough getting past the "smokey" ashtray taste. I am certain there are more complex palates than mine that can appreciate this one, but alas, it is lost on me.

330ml bottle bought from Lighthouse Wines, Jordanstown

Poured pretty much completely black even when held up to the light. Mocha head poured tight, thick and foamy then faded slowly to nice thickish covering... some light sticky lines of lacing around the glass...

Aroma - Strong meat smoked roasted malts, dark chocolate notes, dark sweet coffee, nice treacle / burnt sugar sweetness, leathery, toasted nuts, faint liquorice, some pepperiness...

Taste - Roasted chocolate malts to the fore mixed with some nice meaty smoke, some creamy / milky coffee traces, woody, treacle and brown sugar sweetness, some grassy / peppery traces, some oatiness, liquorice, light sweet nutty notes...

Feel - Quite smooth and creamy... medium/full bodied... very drinkable considering the 8.9% alcohol...

Overall - A very good smoked porter - sweet, smokey and roasty. I really enjoyed this... recommended

Pours black with a dark tan head.
Nose shows some meaty smoked malt alongside smooth roast and cocoa.
Pretty similar flavours, a mix of smoke, roast and sweet bready malt.
Very enjoyable.

Inspiring, deep black color Decent pale tan head.

Smell of porter. Some maltiness.

Predominant flavors of licorice, bitter cola, smoke, and malt. Especially licorice. No sweetness.

Malty finish, hints of licorice and seawater.

Nice mouthfeel, relatively rich.

Effortlessly hides the 8.9% ABV. Not a hit of heat. Impressive, that.

Overall a pretty decent porter. Nothing to get excited about. Not as good as other smoked porters (es. Rogue Big Ass Barrel Tea Smoke Porter).

On-tap 4/19/2015 at Natty Greene’s Tavern, in North Attleboro, MA served in a snifter glass.

A: The beer is a deep black color, with a short light brown head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains roasted and smoked malts, chocolate, licorice and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out with a mild smokiness followed by flavors of licorice, chocolate and dark fruit. Then a hearty roasted malt character comes in. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly smoky and sweet.

M: Smooth and a little crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry and slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, strong kick, good representation of style, this is a good smoked beer to drink for a while if you’re in the mood for the style.
