Evil Twin Brewing
New York, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 12.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Did you like Before, During, & After Christmas? Maybe you thought it poured brilliantly, and you loved of the arrogant amounts of hops wowed you. This beer will knock your tongue off, essentially due to the obscene amount of hops that went down this explosive fella. It’s a tour de force in hoppiness and by far the craziest beer made by Evil Twin… but not the last.

Brewed at Fanø Bryghus.

How is that this successful 3rd generation brewery focussed on the British tradition has escaped me ? (This is my first.)
Answer: they make their money hopping-up IPA's and stouts... then doubling-up the malt etc for high alcohol.
OK, but not my style.

Molotov Cocktail poured a big head and, then, went away... almost totally.
Smell? Yes, there are hops. Taste? There are lots of hops (and there must be something more since I've gotten quite heady.)
Feel? I didn't notice.
Overall... If you are a hop-head, try this. If you are a Belgian-phile like me, I advise one and done.

Well that's an ipa to sip. The booze is there all along. It's nonetheless balanced between the piney and citrusy hops and the caramel malts. This strong beer becomes more drinkable with each sip. Some aging might do some good

12oz bottle poured into a snifter.

It pours a bright amber orange color with some haziness and lots of sediment. The pour builds up thick creamy off-white head that stands with pretty good retention before gradually subsiding to a long-lasting bubble film atop and leaving some spotty and patchy lace. This is a good showcase for such high ABV beer.

Loads of hop intensity in the aroma, it is dank, heavily juicy, tropical, grapefruit, a bit of pineapple, resin, and massive peppery spice like a black pepper. Malt is quite underlying with its biscuit and subtle caramel beneath all the hoppy goodness.

The palate is taken over by hop with only just the initial sip. It provides breathtaking bitterness covering all over before letting the other tastes to incorporate. I can taste citrus, grapefruit, tropical, resin, and loads of peppery spice yet black pepper together with some warming alcohol. Again, malt is undertone as a base of the flavor structure with its biscuit, slight sweet, and caramel. The end and aftertaste is wrapped up and lasting with solid resiny bitterness from hop.

The body is full and bold also a bit sticky and syrupy at time. Thanks to the just right amount of crispness and carbonation to handle it well under the smooth palate and some lively feeling. Finish is pleasantly dry.

This IPA is equipped with the surreal amount of hop. It is so tasty and same time hefty as hell but you won’t feel it until the bottoms up. Prepare to get Molotov before trying.

poured from a 1pt. 6 fl. oz. brown bottle - dated 3/4/2015

Evil Twin's Molotov Cocktail Single Simcoe Hop Edition has a hazy orange/gold body that produced a 1-finger off-white bubbly head. The head was reduced to a foamy collar with no lacing to speak of. The nose was dominated by clean/fresh floral hops, grapefruit and citrus. The taste, as the nose was dominated by hops. There is an intense flavor of grapefruit, citrus, and pine. The malt is masked by the hops This leads to a lingering hop bitterness. There is also a warming alcohol at the finish. The mouth feel is crisp and smooth for such a high abv. Medium body and carbonation.

This hoppy ale is a good representation of the American Double/Imperial IPA - a true hopheads brew. A real tongue twister for this non-hophead and this had some age on it!

Big dank beautiful brew. Massive hop and alcohol profile, while both big and aggressive, don't overwhelm. Fruit forward aroma and taste work well here with the big bold hop flavor.

A: Amber orange in color with a light tan head, and a whole bunch of chunks in there.

S: Pineapple. candied fruit, apples, spice, and a touch of garlic? Sweet, and perhaps a little bit of a Belgian character.

T: Aggressively hoppy with tropical fruit, pungent pine some light citrus, and a lingering orange and honey sweetness in the finish followed by a long bitter cling.

M: Medium thick with fairly assertive carbonation.

O: Overall pretty tasty, aggressive, and unforgiving.

12 oz. can - Batch #024

Pours hazy amber-gold orange with a quickly receding frothy white foam head. Smells like mango, fresh orange, papaya, grapefruit, some caramel biscuity malts, with bitter resinous earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like big mango, fresh orange, some papaya, grapefruit, bitter resinous earthy herbal grassy pine, with boozy caramel biscuity malts. Feels medium-light bodied, creamy and slick with moderate carbonation. Overall a real nice and boozy imperial IPA.

Pours clear amber from 12 oz can with a 1/2" white head. Aroma is citrus and hop. Taste is IPA hoppy with citrus notes. Claims to have mango and orange, but all you get is the citrus. Not a bad thing. Feel is very good, nice and smooth, especially for a 12% brew. Overall, it's easy to drink and very tasty, but at 12% two is probably a good place to stop.

This beer pours a clear gold with an average head. The aroma features orange, caramel, pine, cannabis, mango and cedar. The flavor offers up dark pine, orange peel, roast mano, and is very, very bitter, with a finish of burnt caramel. The mouthfeel is full. thick, and has low carbonation. Overall this beer represents an exploration of bitterness - it is not too sweet, often a risk for the style of DIPA, and not a complex brew, but a very enjoyable one for me.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a speiglau IPA glass.

Look is an orange anger with a head that dissipates quickly.

Aroma is a light candy orange and a alcoholic burn at the end.

Taste is not as strong as aroma. Just a lot of alcohol burn.

Good beer, but lets down a little in taste.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a Dogfish Head tulip

L: Pours a clear golden orange color... 1 finger of white head. Not much lacing.

S: Juicy and fruity... citrus, mango, and pineapple.

T/F: Light malts give way to a very juicy and dank hop profile. Lots of tropicals... the mango shows through. Definite citrus and a bit of pineapple. Also some light floral elements. Sharp and bitter... finish is juice... coats the tongue. Sticky and resinous. Warming and almost boozy.

O: A big juicy IPA. Lots of flavor... and the ABV could be a bit better hidden (that 12% sneaks up on you fast). Love the big juicy DIPA's though. Glad I got a 4-pack.

Caramel amber color, thin wispy head

Smells like their Charlie Work IPA, with wet and fresh grassy aromas

Flavor is very malty and ugly/caramel sweetness. Idk if I can finish this.

Feel is slightly creamy but pointless now.

Drain pour.

Strong imperial with a great taste. The massive amount of hops leaves you relaxed and the taste is satisfying. Highly recommended for the taste, the bite, and the relaxation afterwards.

Type: 8-oz. draft
Glass: Clear snifter
From: Pub 365 at Tuscany Casino in Las Vegas, Nev.
Price: $8.00
Purchased: Dec. 16, 2016
Consumed: Dec. 16, 2016
Reviewed as: American Double / Imperial IPA
Misc.: N/A

Went to this place for the second straight night. This time I reviewed a Molotov Cocktail and sipped on another Bomb! while eating an OK burger. More interested in this one than excited.

Poured a deep gold yellow color with 3-to-4 fingers of rocky white head. Some bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Almost perfect spiderweb foamy lacing. World-class foamy retention. Just a good looking beer. (Sight - 4.75)

Smelled Citra, Cascade, lemon peel, lime, caramel and a touch of tropical. Smells really smooth for 13 pct. ABV. (Smell - 3.75)

Tasted maltier than I would have thought. Caramel, toffee, bitter pine, Citra, dry Cascade, some spices (maybe Simcoe?), lemon peel, citrus zest, Nugget and a touch of earthy tobacco. Boozy, but not 13 pct. ABV boozy. (Taste - 3.75)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Lively carbonation. Dry malty finish. (Feel - 4.25)

Liked the smoothness of this one overall. Was nice to try, but not sure it’s something I would need to have again. (Overall - 4.00)

Appearance - Pours golden colored with pretty decent white head, very spotty lacing around the glass.

Aroma - The alcohol stands out pretty strong, pine, grapefruit, hops very faint hint of fruit hard to tell through the alcohol.

Taste - The alcohol is pretty overwhelming in this, bitter pine, grapefruit not getting much fruit but guess what lots of rubbing alcohol.

Feel - Pretty hot and burns from the alcohol, medium body maybe a little heavy on the carbonation.

Overall - This thing does not play and hits hard with the alcohol, I cant seem to find my way around it to find the other flavors.

Poured the 12oz bottle into a teku glass

I was expecting more from that one, a slight disappointment. Will buy again if given the chance but this will never be my weekly buzz. Sorry.

12oz bottle purchased from local grocery chain for $3.25.

Honey colored brew, haze and precipitant, minimal white foam quickly dissipates to a tiny rim. No lacing. Alcohol legs.

A nice pine resin, spice and earth aroma. Some subtle grapefruit and citrus.

The dank, resin hop profile predominates with a subtle undertone of tropical fruits. A bit of biscuit malt on the finish. A bit of alcohol burn.

Big body, alcohol, sticky.

I am rating this as a triple IPA and as such it is a really nice, extremely hopped sipper.

Gold-amber with a soft thin collar.

Smell is grass, rug resin, weed, and bread.

Taste is Sweet Tarts, hot grapefruit, bread, weed, and onion.

This puppy is really pungent, and sharp, like a pine forest fire.

Batch #022 poured into a Waterford (classy!) white wine glass

A - Pours a golden yellow/orange with a conservative, 1-finger white head. The last bit of the pour introduced a massive amount of 'floaties' that remained in suspension throughout the drinking experience. (3.5)

S - Citrus and Tropical...juicy orange is the first noticed followed by mango and grapefruit zest. Although subtle, there is a sticky, resinous quality lingering in the background. For 13% ABV, the alcohol is completely masked on the nose. A tad one dimensional, but smells delicious nonetheless. (4.5)

T - Nectar of the Gods. The sweet citrus and tropical vibe found in the nose carries through onto the palate. Sweet citrus (orange, clementine, grapefruit), fleshy tropical fruit (mango, papaya) converge with a solid malt backbone to bring this behemoth into focus. The flavors blend with precision. (4.75)

M - Full bodied with moderate carbonation (non-nucleated glassware used) Molotov Cocktail presents itself well. After the sip, the palate is left abrasively sticky and dry, forgoing any notion that this IPA 'cloying' in any facet. As a matter of fact, this beer could be considered refreshing at at the proper moment, but respect is paid to its heft and it is a treat to sit back and enjoy. (4.75)

O - I have had this beer on numerous occasions with varying degrees of pleasure and this one ranks at the top of the heap. Since the 'floaties' do not look like yeast or any by-product of the standard brewing process, I can only surmise that they are the result of the 'natural flavors' added. This is a gargantuan IPA that maintains aroma, mouthfeel, flavor and bitterness all in balance making Molotov Cocktail a memorable high gravity IPA ('Triple' IPA, if you will). My only criticism comes in the form of the bottle dating...batch codes mean nothing to the consumer and would love to know when something like an IPA was packaged (or a Best By Date, at least). That said, if Evil Twin wants to continue the charade of bottle dates, then I now have my reference the next time I look for another 4-Pack of Molotov Cocktail (4.5)

Batch #022. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours golden with a subtle haze and lots of floaties/sediment; nice eggshell white head that falls leaving great retention and nice lacing. The aromas have a nice amount of garlic and onion notes. Some rubber notes as well. Very musty. Malts are there. The flavors seem to follow the nose. More garlic, onion and rubber notes. Some tropical and citrus notes in the mix. I'm picking up some pineapple and grapefruit. It's slightly spicy. Solid malt backbone, but the malts don't diminish the hops at all. There's some warmth in the finish, but the alcohol is well hidden. Mouthfeel is very nice. It's full-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's very smooth and dangerously drinkable.

This is a solid Double/Triple IPA or whatever you want to call it. I usually like the garlic/onion aromas, but something isn't working for me. The hop flavors seem to be what doesn't do it for me personally. The craftsmanship is impressive though. I like how it drinks like a big beer but remains smooth. It's fun to drink.

Okay. My nose has been shot since I was a kid (my dad was a smoker), so I can't discern much smell -wise. And I work at Microsoft. There's the background. When I get home on Friday nights, I want something interesting, fairly strong, and fairly inexpensive. I saw this beer in Whole Foods. 13% IPA for $8. Sounded like a bargain. It was. Very strong, but very drinkable. Notes of inexpensive and a long finish of relaxing. Highly underrated.

A hazy gold color, not much head. Scent is very dank with hints of citrus and alcohol. Taste is similar: piney, a bit of citrus, but fairly bitter. At the same time there's an underlying sweetness with flavors of brown sugar and toffee. Feel is somehow oily yet dry and crisp, esp. for a big beer. Not a great beer but a definite near-miss and the kind of big, strong face-biter I like to drink every one in a while.

L: copper orange. Little head. Just ok.

S: smell is ok. Bitter hops with a slight slight citrus.

T: holy crap that's hoppy. If you like a strong bitter bomb this is it. The first sip was the most in your face. The name says it all. It did get better as I drank it.

F: again like it's name. Fire bitter and alcohol heat.

O: I think the beer does what it is intended for, but it's not really my thing. But if you are a big hop head you will like it.

Picked up a bomber of this for around 9 bucks tax included so quite a sweet deal.

A - Quite hazy bright yellow orange color with surprising full inch of frothy head that takes a bit to dissipate to a small foam cap.
S - Quite full of bright simcoe hops very sweet smelling notes of pineapple and some bittering hops as well. No ethanol which is a surprise.
T - Wow very nice balance sweet then bitter hops with a warming bit of booze in the finish. Bitterness lingers on the tongue with each sip.
M - ABV shows quite a bit it is smooth but medium to heavy in body.

Overall an insane Triple IPA that is not only balanced but quite bitter and the price is pretty great for bomber standards!

Almost clear, a deep gold with just a smidge of head dabbed on the top. The ring of head leaves a delicate ring of lacing. The aroma isn't huge but it has a distinct hops note, I get mostly pine. The body has a nice caramel sweetness to it that strongly offsets the heavy simcoe, balancing it out. The body isn't too heavy but has a nice thickness to it with just a little bitterness bite on the finish.
