Dark roasted beer with far too little character or focus. I suppose the name says it all, a new york city hotel room is close to so much amazing stuff but it is hell to be there. It is small, cramped, and over priced as hell. This beer is the same. Sweet roasted and boring as hell. At 10% AND AT 10 bucks a bottle any sane person would want more.

Pitch black color with mocha head. Aroma has chocolate and some sweet spices. I get vanilla, cloves, cinnamon and some liquor. Taste starts sweet and slightly boozy. Finishes bitter and roasty, lingering in the aftertaste. I also get some hops in the aftertaste. Body is heavy and has medium carbonation. Quite good overall, just slightly boozy for my taste.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: totally, completely black with a finger of dark brown, frothy, creamy foam. Outstanding.

Smell: big, sweet malt; dark fruit; deep roast and -- is that a little wood? Very good indeed.

Taste: roasty, sweet, deep and dark. Starts of with fruitiness, moves into a bit of alcohol heat and finishes with a great roastiness. There is a little bit of a lingering vegetal character but that is acceptable given its other hugenesses.

Mouthfeel: medium-rich body but with a bit of a restrained carbonation and a decent creaminess, if a bit light considering this beer's otherwise plenty of heft.

Overall: I enjoy the heck out of this beer. A great example of the style.

Pours nearly jet black with a almost non existent head atop.Aromas of buttery rum, bitter chocolate, and dark fruit.A flatter feel with flavors of dark fruit and bitter chocolate mainly, brash sweet alcohol in the finish.Eh not as good as I was hoping for but not awful.

Bottled on 08/23/13

A: A jet black beer with a thick, espresso colored head. The head is made of compact, long lasting foiam.

S: Some dark stone fruit, a bit of alcohol and a slight note of citrus hops.

T: Strong dark malt flavors with some unsweetened chocolate, roast, burnt sugar and a some dark fruit flavors. There is a moderate dark malt bitterness and a medium hops bitterness; against the moderate caramel sweetness the balance is somewhat towards the bitter. There is a linger bitterness in the aftertaste with some alcohol sweetness in the medium finish.

M: A medium-full bodied beer with medium-strong carbonation.

O: A big, richly flavored Imperial Stout.

On tap at When Pigs Fly. Near black in color with a cocoa-colored head that was very sticky.
Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee. A hint of vanilla.
Lots of chocolate in the taste, both dark chocolate and cocoa. A little bit of coffee.
Very smooth, alcohol well-hidden.

Astringent flavor on the back end turns me off. Not comparable to the other stouts evil twin puts out.

33cl bottle. Pitch black pour with a medium height tan head with modest retention. Notes of dark chocolate, roasted malts, some dark cherries, molasses and licorice. The alcohol could be a bit more hidden, but otherwise this is a solid beer, smooth mouthfeel, full bodied and with a chocolate bitter-sweet taste.

Also had on Christmas Eve but not in a New York Hotel Room

L: Pours bright black with ruby highlights under a ½” lacy dark tan foam cap that is moderately persistent.

S: Roast, coffee, dark malt and faint chocolate aromas.

T: Alcohol spice, rich chocolate, traces of coffee, some rich dark sugars produce a light sweetness. A faint hint of baking spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg. The roasty malt flavors are medium high, the hop bitterness medium, the alcohol flavors are medium, the yeast flavors and hop flavors are medium low.

F: Very creamy medium full body and medium carbonation with a mild and pleasant alcohol warming.

O: This is a big imperial stout with a very pleasant blend of flavors.

On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Dark, deep brown with nearly no head and eventual dots of lacing down the glass.

Huge amounts of roasted malt in the aroma along with little else, perhaps the tiniest hint of chocolate sweetness and dark fruit, but this is simple and roasty, though very boldly aromatic.

The flavor is again dominated by huge amounts of roasted malt with almost a smokey characteristic, a bit of bitter chocolate, and a mild dark fruit component; this beer is also relatively, almost strangely, bitter for a big stout. Drinkable, though simple.

Medium to full bodied with low carbonation.

A fine, above-average stout, but certainly not worth the price tag, as there are finer examples for less than half the cost.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Brooklyn chalice.

Appearance: Pours midnight black with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of tan head that settles into a thin creamy layer. Leaves some decent lacing.

Smell: A roasty and toasty dark malt forward aroma with hints of chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit. Roasted malt with upfront hints of dark chocolate, coffee beans, burnt toast, biscuit, grains, caramel, yeast, and smoke. Sweet hints of molasses and cream. Dark fruit hints of cherry, raisin, and fig. Subtle earthy hop hints. A very solid roasty aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a nicely roasty and toasty dark malt driven taste with some good notes of chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit. Roasted barley malt with upfront notes of dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, toast, biscuit, grains, caramel, smoke, and yeast. Sweet taste of molasses along with some notes of cream. Subtle dark fruit notes of raisin, fig, and cherry. Light background notes of earthy hops. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Creamy, bitter, and pretty drying on the finish. Alcohol heat is fairly minimal.

Overall: A pretty good take on an Imperial Stout. Good dark roasty malt flavors with a nice drying bitterness.
