Style: American Barleywine

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.30%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Did you also at some point in your life get seduced by promising words like ‘probably (not) the best in the world’, ‘it (doesn’t really) work every time’ etc. This American Barley Wine says it how it is. It’s intense, attention seekingly hoppy and definitely your kind of beer. A beer with a big ego, drive and a huge thirst for recognition.

Appearance: Amber, tons of yeast chunks, big head. The chunks are probably due to age and an aggressive pour.

Smell: Sweet, caramel, dark fruit, olives.

Taste: Sweet, candied fruits-cherry and strawberry, bit of caramel. Stays sweet through the finish.

Overall: I picked up a four pack of this barleywine since it was discounted to $5. I can't tell the bottle date but figure it is probably at least a year old. So, after maybe a year of shelf/fridge aging, this barleywine was sweet and malty, with not much in the way of hop flavor. Pretty good, especially if discounted this much.

Bottle share. seeing the rave reviews and not getting it. Actually poured my glass out. Dark, bitter pit fruit, prune juice. Not recalling a barley wine at all. Tried hard to find some redeeming qualities, and then I gave up.

A - Pours a dark ruby red with a creamy off white one finger head. Light amount of sticky lacing.

S - Aroma is sweet dark malts and ripe dark fruits.

T - The taste starts with some aggressive piney hops. The hops are backed by some sweet dark malts, toffee, and dark fruits. The finish has a lingering piney bitterness.

M - Medium body with medium carbonation. Syrupy mouthfeel with a crisp dry finish.

O - This is a nice Barleywine. The hop bitterness is touch overbearing though.

Slightly hazy dark amber color with beige head. Aroma is sweet and malty with intense alcohol. Taste is quite bitter up-front with some roasted malts in the background. Alcohol is quite present in the taste too. Medium body and carbonation. Really bitter and alcoholic barleywine, very unbalanced.

Sampling right now on 3/2/16. No date on label. Comes in a 12 ounce single bottle from Evil Twin Brewing in Strafford, CT., their "FREUDIAN SLIP" contains a stronger 10.3% alcohol (ABV). Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a snifter glass.

Brew pours just lighter-side of medium amber in color with close to a finger head that is 'egg shell' in color. A decent amount of sticky lacing is seen when sipped that stayed in place. Aroma is of sweet malts with a hint of pine and even some dark fruits. Taste of front is the 'pine hops' bitterness along with some booze mixed with some sweetness from the malts and maybe a hint of caramel. Lots going on really with this brew. The bitterness for the doesn't last long and is very drinkable, though this is a 'sipper' kind of brew. medium-bodied with lower carbonation. Overall a good brew.

Evil Twin really is evil. I'll review this, drink it, and take a nap.

This bottle is marked 259:15, so I think it is several months old. I don't think this style needs aging any more than that.

It's a nice brown color with fine bubbles. The aroma is strong dark malts. The taste is a balanced bitter sweet with a boozy finish. Very nice. Evil Twin conquers another style.

Warning. This drink is a (cool) drug. I felt a rush as I swallowed the first sip. One toke brew, man. Highly recommended for a serious barleywine experience.

I think this was bottled around 4 months ago. This certainly was aggressively hopped. They were tea-like for the most part with some faint tropical fruit. The lingering bitterness was a bit flavorless. The malt balance was robust enough to shine through, sweet toffee and raisins mostly.

I really enjoyed this relatively fresh but I think I might like it more with some aging. Definitely worth purchasing again.

Pours a brownish copper with less than a finger of head. The nose is fairly week for the style - some malt but nothing that bowls me over. The flavor profile is pretty much in line with a standard American style barleywine - malt backbone with a good dose of hops.

This is a lesser cousin of Bigfoot but sadly more expensive.
