BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Evil Twin Brewing

Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Roman Empire had a certain "je ne sais quoi" - festive food culture, extravagant architecture, and spectacular live entertainment. Some might argue the Emperors were brutal, mad, and hungry for power, and the people vain when taking baths and working out all day. Listen - that's still all part of the secret Imperial ingredient - keep it cool, clean, confident, arrogant, and flamboyant. Forza Imperiale.

22oz bottle poured into a snifter
A: Pitch black with a 1/2-finger mocha-colored head that stays at a thin level forever
S: Melted chocolate, cream/vanilla, coffee, roasted malt, caramel
T: Chocolate cake, chocolate frosting, a bit of coffee/malt/caramel, a bit of booze. Tasty but definitely dessert
M: Full-bodied, fairly sweet, a bit of alcohol
O: This is certainly tasty but I actually think I'd like it better if it were a bit less sweet. The amount of sugar/abv make it hard to finish the bottle. I'd still recommend trying it

Looks jet black with a brown head, quickly disappears. Smells very chocolatey with slight coffee aroma. Taste is absolutely top notch with roasted malts, chocolate cake and a little coffee flavor. Feel is medium-full bodied with very little alcohol present. Overall one of my favorite stouts and is def one of the Evil Twin beers that justify the price tag. Buy it if you see it!

Poured from a bomber into a wine glass

APPEARANCE: Pitch black with a thin tan head that lingers surprisingly long. Sheets of tan lacing are left behind.

AROMA: Very sweet. Rich roasted malts and cake. Some chocolate and faint booze.

FLAVOR: Chocolate cake, roasted barley, caramel, coffee, almond milk, gingerbread and a hint of earthiness.

TEXTURE: Thick, slick, and creamy with very light carbonation. The ideal feel for a beer of this style and magnitude.

OVERALL: Top-notch imperial stout. I can understand why this is so highly sought after. If big, rich stouts are your thing, get your hands on this if you can.

Way too sweet, I like my coffee black so this was not a bonus. Otherwise good coffee flavor, mouth feel and surprisingly no booziness...but won't buy again.

Best before 2015... no idea when it might have been bottled.

Appearance: Jet black body with a generous finger of dark tan froth.

Aroma: Dark malts with a bit of a soy sauce edge. Maybe past its prime?

Taste: Definitely on the sweeter side but with a fair amount of bitterness on the back end. Quite boozy as well. Lots of black coffee essence and some harder flavors to discern (dark chocolate, almond, vanilla extract?) that all add up to an odd experience. Still it has a certain liqueur quality that is nice in the finish. Bitter dark chocolate/black coffee aftertaste. It's growing on me.

Mouthfeel: Thicker than molasses in the dead of winter. Just the right amount of minimal carbonation. Low drinkability.

Final Thoughts: Maybe past it's prime but still decent. The copious amount of flaky sediment coming out of the bottle when rinsing it had me worried. Would I drink it again? Maybe, but not before trying more of Evil Twin's lineup.
