Evil Twin Brewing

Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Roman Empire had a certain "je ne sais quoi" - festive food culture, extravagant architecture, and spectacular live entertainment. Some might argue the Emperors were brutal, mad, and hungry for power, and the people vain when taking baths and working out all day. Listen - that's still all part of the secret Imperial ingredient - keep it cool, clean, confident, arrogant, and flamboyant. Forza Imperiale.

Poured into snifter straight from the fridge. Sugary and sticky look. Smells of bittersweet chocolate, some coffee grinds, dried dark fruit and molasses - taste followed with a touch of booze. As it warms to the peak temperature - wow! A chocolatey, slick mouthful followed by a brief touch of roared malt and hop. No booze at all.

My local shoppe just got a bunch of Evil Twin in and I had to just start trying them all and this is definitely my favorite so far.

A - Rich black with a viscosity that is hallmark of a good imperial stout. The thick fluid won't let the bubbles escape only yielding a small, fine dark brown head but with good lacing.

S - Initially this is what a coffee imperial stout should smell like. There is malt, caramel, dark chocolate, roast, and dark coffee. There is a lot going on in the nose and a sweet, dark roasted coffee is a good starting point.

T - Initially the sweet malt, caramel, and chocolate flavors open you mouth wide. It is smooth and rich allowing the dark roasted coffee and roasted malt to drive it home. It's robust and smooth. The finish is a balance of all the previous flavors but just tilted toward the bitter, roasted side clearing your palate. Very delicious flavor that is smooth and balanced well.

M - High mouth-feel with low carbonation. It's a sticky beer with significant sweetness but enough roasted character to help it clear the tongue.

Overall, this is a very delicious beer. Great flavor that is smooth, rich, and more balanced than some of Evil Twin's beers. It is still slightly sweet with the chocolate and coffee but it's very good flavor. As far as imperial stouts go this is a very good one. There are a few that I would just put above this one but very close.

This is quite the rich, coffee imperial beer. I recommend anyone to try it because it's a solid imperial coffee stout. Compared to some of the best imperial coffee stouts, this example isn't quite as good, but still up there in quality.

LSTFO (A):

Look: Dark, thick and syrupy. minimal head.

Smell: Coffee, carmel, sugar, yeast.

Taste: Strong coffee, but well balanced with sweetness - though it felt artificial at times.

Feel: Very nice mouth feel. Syrupy (much like its looks), but not overwhelming.

Overall: Great imperial stout. Not the best in the world, but certainly something remarkable and better than the majority of coffee stouts. A little disappointed by the artificial taste of the beer... almost as if flavors were added. Also a little confused over who actually makes this beer... it appears Eviltwin contracts this beer out. Not a huge deal because the beer is still good - but what's with the copacker?

Aftertaste: Syrupy flavor lingers but is wonderfully complemented by the coffee aftertastes.

Black appearance. Had it on draft and had a small head.
Aromas was great. Slight coffee but mostly sweet(brown sugar sweet).
Taste was very similar to the smell. Sweet brown sugar, molasses, with coffee and vanilla.
Mouthfeel was very nice. Smooth and creamy.

A: Dark, oily black. Deep tan, creamy head, low retention.

S: Chocolate, dark fruits, slight bourbon smell.

T: Surprising amount of hops up front, chocolatey, a little vanilla. Peaty finish.

M: Smooth and creamy. Low carbonation. Fabulous.

O: Really great beer. Hoppier than most imperial stouts which threw me off, but still smooth and enjoyable. Would drink again!
