BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Evil Twin Brewing

Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Roman Empire had a certain "je ne sais quoi" - festive food culture, extravagant architecture, and spectacular live entertainment. Some might argue the Emperors were brutal, mad, and hungry for power, and the people vain when taking baths and working out all day. Listen - that's still all part of the secret Imperial ingredient - keep it cool, clean, confident, arrogant, and flamboyant. Forza Imperiale.

Poured into a Duvel snifter glass.

A - 4.75 - Pours jet black in color, forms a good finger of extremely dark tan to light brown colored head. Medium head potential, low head retention. Nice solid rings of lacing.
S - 4.25 - Tons of malts, cakey-cookie-biscuit-breadiness, light and distant dark fruit and coffee.
T - 4.25 - Matches the nose closely. Tons of sweet malt, on the border of cake/cookie flavor, medium amount of coffee. Not much chocolate. Slightly boozy and very warming.
F - 4.75 - Nice thick, creamy mouth feel. Full body.
O - 4.25 - One of the better imperial stouts that I have had in a long time.

Pitch black, aromatic, and thick as tar. Lots of chocolate and coffee, but bitterness is a bit intense (drank fresh, not aged). A bit too viscous, busy, and overwhelming for my taste. All of these are nice in combination, but whole is somehow less than the parts here.

Having this brew at about cellar temp. Appearance is a huge, thick, foamy tan head that slowly subsides, lots of lace, and an opaque black brown color. Aroma is mild - malt, cocoa, toffee, biscuit, yeast, coffee. Flavor's like nose plus slightly sweet tart up front with bitter coming next and finishing with a dynamic mix of the three. No off characteristics at all. Everything is very smooth and balanced. Later more sweetness comes out. Aesthetics are key here. Beautiful body. I want so much more.
