Brewed by:
Evil Twin Brewing
New York, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Roman Empire had a certain "je ne sais quoi" - festive food culture, extravagant architecture, and spectacular live entertainment. Some might argue the Emperors were brutal, mad, and hungry for power, and the people vain when taking baths and working out all day. Listen - that's still all part of the secret Imperial ingredient - keep it cool, clean, confident, arrogant, and flamboyant. Forza Imperiale.

The beer pours a beautiful look, with a serious brown fizzy head than dies to a ring quickly and a black hue. Lacing is decent.

The smell lives up to the name: nice coffee roast, sugary maple, some bacon, ginger sweet breakfast scone, and more. Quite excellent.

The taste lives up to it for the most part, but has sort of metallic overtone to it that detracts just slightly. Lots of roasted espresso with slight brown sugar sweetness, vanilla, waffles. Awesome and unique has a slight smoke overall like the smell of a dinner at work.

The feel is nice and full bodied, roasty and toasted.

Overall an excellent beer, I really love it.

A: Pitch black; thick; viscous. Beautiful pour. I would have given it a 5 except that the head dissipated a little quickly and I would have liked to have been a little bit thicker. Otherwise, looks just like a stout should.

S: Awesome melange of vanilla, almond, molasses, coffee, and chocolate. I get the vanilla and roasted nut aroma the most. Wish it had just a bit more coffee in the nose but still...pretty damn intoxicating.

T: Ridiculously good. Incredible mixture of the following: molasses, bitter dark chocolate, roasty cocoa, carmelized brown sugar, vanilla, toasted nuts, coffee (not as much as I was expecting but still present). So good!

M: Thick, viscous, chewy...a sipper for sure. ABV is well hidden IMO. Definitely something to sit, sip, and ponder...which is exactly what I like and expect in an Imperial Stout like this one.

Overall, this is a great brew and definitely lives up to the high ratings received here and elsewhere. Recommended for sure. I hope to be able to find some more! Outstanding.

Bottle (2012)

Best Damn Beer Shop (in Super Jr. Market)
San Diego, CA

Black with a small dark brown head that leaves irregular spiderwebs of lacing down the glass.

Incredibly expressive, bold aroma of coffee, vanilla, and chocolate. It's relatively simple, but the rich, morning coffee and dark, bold chocolate aromas are so incredibly full and inciting, it doesn't need much more than this bold simplicity.

This is truly what I wish for and dream about when I imagine the perfect imperial coffee stout. The dark chocolate, vanilla, and coffee notes reminds me of dessert and freshly baked brownies more than they do any sort of beer. The lingering dark chocolate and coffee flavors are astounding, lasting forever between sips. The alcohol is absolutely, fantastically, gone. This is dangerous stuff.

Medium bodied with low carbonation, though very, very creamy. This is a decadent dessert, or a perfect after-work beer. It all works.

Evil Twin is making some incredible imperial stouts right now, and this is one of the best.

Huge thanks to ArchEnemyBrew for sending this beer my way! Thanks Hollis!

poured into a snifter.

Appearance: dark black bodied beer with a small mocha colored head that drops to a ring. Spotty lace.

Smell: Nice roasty coffee notes and creamer. Little bit of vanilla too.

Taste: This one starts off roasty and gets sweeter as it warms. The fresh roasted coffee is moderately bitter. Next I am getting a vanilla wafer note and also has that lacto sweetness of a milk stout.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with low carbonation. This beer is so smooth and the 12% is redicously hidden...not even a hint of booze. This beer is very silky and velvety. The carbonation really about perfect and actually makes the beer seem soft and delicate even though it such a big beer.

Overall: It lives the claim of dessert in a glass and has a killer mouthfeel on this beer. Its a fantastic drink; seek it out! One of the better non BA Imperial Stouts that I have drank in a while! (Bumped the overall score from 4.5 to a 5 because I would rate the taste at a 4.25)

Thanks to Matt for sharing.

A: Black with a finger of light brown foam.

S: Nutty toffee and chocolate. Strong earthy coffee aroma with some brown sugar. Lots of roast and a touch of molasses. There's a little coconut but I'm not sure where that's coming from.

T: Roasted and nutty with caramel and chocolate. Brown sugar with a little molasses and vanilla. Pervasive earthy coffee presence. Lower moderate bitterness. Alcohol is very well hidden.

M: Full body with creamy moderate carbonation. Smooth and sticky mouthfeel.

Overall: A really nice beer. Recommended.

Thanks to Mike, Matt, and Michael for sharing the Evil Twin Biscotti and Imperial Biscotti beers with me. I heart you guys.

The beer appears dark brown, approaching black, with a beige head. The aroma offers coffee, roast, oak, bread, biscuits. Lots of coffee, with a delicious almond / hazelnut flavor. Wow, fantastic tasting brew. Lightly sweet, with a superb vanilla, coffee, oak. Beautifully balanced. A terrific beer I would love to have again.
