Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
The Roman Empire had a certain "je ne sais quoi" - festive food culture, extravagant architecture, and spectacular live entertainment. Some might argue the Emperors were brutal, mad, and hungry for power, and the people vain when taking baths and working out all day. Listen - that's still all part of the secret Imperial ingredient - keep it cool, clean, confident, arrogant, and flamboyant. Forza Imperiale.

Poured from a bomber: deep, oily black with a dusting of a beige head. Aromas are strong with molasses, currant, cinnamon, raspberry, brown sugar, a little coffee. Flavor is intensely dark and sweet. Lots of chocolate with cherry, raspberry, and some breadiness. Tastes like a rich piece of flourless chocolate cake with a raspberry syrup. Feel is pretty heavy, somewhat syrupy, but has a lightness to it as well. Overall this is a deep, rich, sweet, roasty beer with lots of depth. It hasn't warmed up yet but I'm already noticing it change, with the smell more chocolatey, and the flavor smoothing slightly. A great beer to be enjoyed on a quiet evening.

Pours pitch black like motor oil. Thin, tan head which clings to the sides.
Smells of toasted Carmel and chocolate. Molasses and malt smell rounds it out...terrific.
Taste follows the nose followed up with the hop. Also some licorice. A little ash, and toasted coconut.
A big mouthfeel. A very complex one this is.

This beer pours your typical Imperial stout color, that deep, rich motor-oil black, with hardly any head. The nose is very complex, starting with milk chocolate and leading into a bouquet of fruit scents - blackberry, plum, raisin, fig, peach and cranberry. I also get some spice, some cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger, like ginger bread really. The flavor starts by tasting like hersheys syrup, but quickly moves into rich notes of raisin, fig, and plum, and a strong finish of fresh blueberry. The amazing thing is with all this fruit and chocolate, there is very little sweetness here. The mouthfeel is full but not thick or syrupy. It really has just the right amount of weight. Overall this was much more fruit forward than I was expecting, but this was not a bad thing. Endlessly complex, even sharing I sat through a whole movie sipping on this. I understand the buzz on it.

Bomber > Tulip Glass

A - Pitch black with a nice two finger tan head, thick walls of lacing.
S - Mild coffee, rich deep malt, caramel, milk chocolate, some light burnt woodiness, very roasty.
T - Delicious, sweet and creamy rich malt, very mild coffee, rich silky milk and dark chocolate, almond nuttiness, light smoke. Definitely some dark cherry and fig in here too, there is a very complex profile in the flavor.
M - So smooth and creamy, deep and rich, very balanced and hides the abv well.
O - Excellent imperial stout, very creamy, so smooth and deep, very well balanced.

Inky black with khaki head

Vanilla, prunes, plums in the nose.

Taste surprised me on first sip...wasn't what I expected from the nose. Lots of rasberry.

Nice creamy mouthfeel, but still light....drinks easy for 11.5%

Unique and enjoyable. The fruit is what I'll remember most.

2014 bottle.

Pours a medium thick milk chocolate colored head with light lacing.

Overripe fig. Burnt white sugar.

Heavy blackstrap molasses flavor. Alcohol heat builds, but is not very present in the overall taste. Roast, roast, roast. Even with this older bottle the coffee bitterness comes through strongly.

Creamier mouthfeel than expected.

Overall I am enjoying this much more than expected. The roastiness is perfectly balanced with the fruit. Not sure what a fresh bottle tastes, like, but this is certainly super tame and balanced.

Pours a pitch very dark brown with thin but dense and creamy medium brown head, rings of fine lace struggle to stick to the glass. Smell: faded earthy espresso, caramel, fig, currants, chocolate liquor, waffle cone. Taste: bite of vanilla ice cream in chocolate dipped waffle cone, currants, caramel, note of earthy espresso, mostly clean but slightly spicy hopping provides some degree of balance. Full bodied with exceptionally creamy feel. Good but would rather have a 4-pack of Lil' B.

A: Opaque and ebony. Abundant warm, dark brown head.

S: Sweet, dried fruits. Molasses. Something much lighter and almost floral, too.

T: Rich and creamy with a little coffee and cacao nibs at the fore, rounded out by the flavors of raw cane sugar and something that reminds me of fresh apple cider. I guess maybe that's the biscotti/doughnut flavor.

M: Thick, sumptuous and silky. Even and tightly structured carbonation.

O: Really an excellent imperial stout. As rich and sophisticated as many of its bourbon aged counterparts without the intense booziness and mash flavors (which i think often overpower all else). Quite excellent, especially given that it's not super hard to find.
