Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 12.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
A few times in the history of craft beer it has happened that a highly praised beer rises beyond mortal stardom into the higher godly league. Usually the recipe to make such heavenly drops is thick fudge-like body, pitch black color, amazingly overwhelming aromas of chocolate, coffee, dark fruits and muscovado sugar, obviously only made in limited amounts and most crucial of all -- it must taste rare!

I wanted to love this stout. Like many stouts out there, it's a dark brown with tan head that dissipates to just a light film rather quickly. Nice mouth-feel due to some viscosity. The nose is a light coffee and alcohol. I get coffee and chocolate flavors, but especially coffee. The problem is the strong alcohol taste and lack of depth. The overall flavor profile would probably benefit from some barrel aging. I drank it slowly over an hour and the coffee flavor seemed to lessen. Chocolate increased. In the end, though, it reminded me of a good but young wine that needed some mellowing.

Man, pouring this stuff would make you think that the liquid came straight from the murkiest parts of the River Styx itself. Not black, but as deep brown and as opaque as it comes, and THICK! Not much head, but a decent amount of carbonation.

For some reason, I expected this stout to be a bit sweeter. It's chocolatey, yeah, but more like cocoa then Hershey's. Both in the smell and the taste, there is a dry, bitter quality that comes off like heavily toasted grains with a bit of coffee. Not much residual sugar or fruitiness, contrary to what the label suggests. I'm surprised it's not barrel-aged, because there's a lot of woody, charred oak flavor to it.

The most remarkable thing about this beer isn't the flavor, but the lack of heft. 12% and thick as any beer I've drank, I expected it to be a real booze bomb, a necessary sipper. However, I was swishing it around in my mouth to taste it and gulping down mouthfuls and it goes down like it was half as strong as it is...okay maybe not half as strong but I've I certainly tasted boozier, harsher beers with much lower ABV.

Overall, a winner, though perhaps not something I'd rush towards again, since if I'm doing a stout this intense, I prefer a bit more mellow sweetness like Dragons Milk, or The Abyss - different, I know, but it's a preference thing.

16oz can pours nearly fully opaque, dark tan head.

Smells of cocoa, coffee roast.

Taste is cocoa powder and dark coffee, a little charred wood flavor. Some booze picked up once it fully warms but very little.

Pretty thick, viscous feel, but silky. Low carb. Slight roasted malt bitterness lingers along with sweet chocolate. Excellent.

Really good chocolate and coffee dominated stout with some smokey char thrown in all wrapped in a full body.

Weak aroma and flavor for such a big beer, moderately strong alcohol in the finish and a little too thick

A 22 fl. oz. bomber with no clear bottled on or best before date. Poured into a snifter.

Appearance: Deep slick motor oil black with not much head despite an aggressive pour and some sparse spotty lacing.

Aroma: Roasty dark malts, molasses, chocolate, coffee, dark fruits and a hint of char.

Taste: Roasty, chocolate, molasses, caramel and coffee. On the back end, at times there is this light lingering smoked honey glazed bacon flavour. Interesting!

Mouthfeel: Creamy, full bodied with low carbonation.

Overall: A nice sipper for a cool day.

L: dark black, kind of thick, with a decent sized tan head that is fizzier than I expected from a beer this thick
S: pure roasted malt - chocolate and coffee
T: same as the smell, roasted malt, chocolate and coffee mostly, with a decent amount of bitterness - both coffee bitterness from the roasted malt and some hop bitterness too. Very nice.
F: not very boozy for a beer this strong, the flavor hides any alcohol. Kind of thick, but not too much so. Pretty drinkable for a heavy stout.
O: This was Evil Twin's last chance for me. I've tried several of their beers and always been disappointed. This one is a winner. Hard to find a better RIS with this price point and availability.

A: Dark black body, with a crazy creamy, dark tan head.

S: Rich roasted malty goodness with molasses, chocolate, a touch of smoke, and perhaps a hint of wood.

T: Rich, malty, and bold. Molasses and caramel with tons of roasted grain. Almost a touch tannic in the finish.

M: Creamy thick feel, with moderate to high carbonation.

O: Overall pretty good, but a touch harsh.

This has been sitting in my closet for close to two years when I finally broke it out. Wow! Glad I have more in there. Glad it is so readily available in Connecticut! Great stout!

Pours like used motor oil with a firm carmel colored head. Smooth and sweet with a meaty mouthfeel and cherry laced chocolate finish. It was pricey but worth it.
