Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 12.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
A few times in the history of craft beer it has happened that a highly praised beer rises beyond mortal stardom into the higher godly league. Usually the recipe to make such heavenly drops is thick fudge-like body, pitch black color, amazingly overwhelming aromas of chocolate, coffee, dark fruits and muscovado sugar, obviously only made in limited amounts and most crucial of all -- it must taste rare!

From a 16oz can:

Appearance: Totally black, big brown head. Poured like motor oil.

Smell: Sweet, some chocolate.

Taste: Sweet, chocolate, some dark fruit, molasses, a bit of booze. Thick mouthfeel.

Overall: A big impy stout in cans for about $12 a 4-pack, not bad. The beer is good, too. Hits most of the big stout markers: more on the sweet side (that's a plus for me) instead of the roasty side, chocolatety, a little boozy but not too much. Pretty good stuff.

16oz. can:

Look: Dark as the night! Reminiscent of old engine oil. Head is very thick, brown, and lasting.

Smell: Sweet molasses and brown sugar. Coffee and chocolate are present. At 12%, it smells boozy too.

Taste: Much like the smell suggests, it is abnormally sweet, countered by the alcohol. Flavors of molasses and dark chocolate highlight initially, with a boozy finish.

Feel: Thick, syrupy, oily, really full bodied. Leaves your mouth feeling sticky and dry. Overall very tasteful, but definitely non-sessionable!

From a 16oz can, batch #005, undated. Served in a pint glass.

Looks exactly like pouring motor oil. A half finger of profoundly ugly brown head dies back quickly leaving a thick, viscous ring and thick lacing around the glass.

The nose and the taste are inseparable, all prunes and raisins, bittersweet chocolate, cold coffee and tobacco. Plus some soy sauce and smokey grains on the palate. Finishes fast and clean with no hint of booziness.

Mouthfeel is thick and heavy, verging on syrupy without ever crossing the line.

I have finally met a stout which is too heavy for me to enjoy. It's delicious but, if I drink this whole can, I'm going to die.

The color looked dark brown when pouring and black when poured. The head formation was brown, but settled down into a deep khaki color. The aroma was deeply roasted coffee, chocolate, and roasted grains. The taste was not as hoppy as many beers of this style, which allowed sweet flavors like cocoa, toffee, brown sugar, dates, and vanilla shine through. The finish was a little warm, but nowhere near feeling like a 12% ABV beer. The feel was quite silky, and there was very little astringency . This was quite easy to drink for an Imperial Stout.

An awesome imperial stout. I put it right up there with Founders Imperial Stout as one of the best non-flavored/aged stouts available.

Poured from a 16 oz. can into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours midnight black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big two finger tan head which settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A very rich and roasty dark malt driven aroma with a scent of chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit. Dark roasted malt with a scent of dark chocolate, coffee, smoke, toast, and biscuit with yeast. Sweet scent of molasses. Dark fruit hints of raisin, fig, dates, and prune. Also some hints of leather, tobacco, and earthy hops. A really good rich aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a rich and roasty dark malt driven taste with notes of chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit. Dark roasted malt with rich notes of dark chocolate, coffee, smoke, toast, and biscuit along with yeast. Sweet notes of molasses and syrup. Dark fruit notes of fig, raisin, cherry, dates, and prune. Some notes of leather and tobacco along with earthy hop bitterness. A really good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Rich, creamy, and somewhat syrupy. Alcohol heat is masked well.

Overall: A really great Imperial Stout. Good rich roasty malt notes with some nice dark fruit undertones.

This is a very good stout. Pours pitch black with a very thick brown head. There is a ton of lacing, more so than I am used to with stouts and especially this abv. Aroma is woody, heavily roasted and even some tobacco. Taste is woody/coffee/very dark chocolate. Feel is not as silky as some, but lightly carbonated and not as thick as you would expect, making this fairly easy to go down. It's a warming beer. The alcohol presence is there, but it's not overpowering especially at 12%. Overall, a very straightforward stout. A great example of the style minus the sweetness. I can only imagine what this tastes like aged in bourbon barrels. A perfect beer to end the night.

Canned
Black bodied with nice thickish tan head
Full on espresso with chocolate syrup with butter fudge
So you have that flavour with some earthy bitterness
The mouthfeel is where it's at
Its the solI'd foundation of a superbly layered huge ale
