Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 12.00%

Notes / Commercial Description:
On a pilgrimage for immortal craft beer we tripped on these heavenly coffee beans - threw them in and created damn good aromas, a thick fudge-like body, pitch black color and obviously only made in limited amounts. And the taste.... furthermore jesus!

Pours like used motor oil, impervious to light. Virtually impossible to create any type of head, even swirling in the glass only generated the faintest amounts of foam. The beer coats the glass and has huge legs. 12% abv is well hidden. Has a sharp metallic / coffee aroma, not much going on there. Full bodied beer, thick and syrupy, I taste a lot of bittersweet chocolate and espresso, some fudge, finishes very dry with a pleasant lingering espresso aftertaste. Carbonation is minimal, liquid is extremely viscous. Overall I am glad I tried this beer but I don't need to drink it again.

12 oz bottle, no date but I think it is a fairly recent bottle.

Poured near room temperature into a Lost Abbey Teku glass, not sure when it was bottled. Pours near pitch black with a massive 3 finger mocha head that has excellent retention and takes its sweet time slowly settling into a ring of mocha bubbles that hugs the sides of the glass and leaves some spotty lace behind.

Smell is roasted expresso, vanilla beans, Ameretto, hazelnut, truffles, and just the slightest hint of warming alcohol.

Taste very much about the roasty expresso, Deep dark chocolate, vanilla, truffles, and just a hint of warming alcohol.

Mouthfeel is near large, gentle carbonation, actually not dry and that is unusual for this style, and it is so darn drinkable at 12% ABV.

Overall this is as good a Imperial Stout as I have ever drank, really world class!

I don't see a bottle date listed.

Appearance: It has a black body and a very dark brown head which has a creamy texture. The head slowly fades leaving some creamy-textured islands with a thick frothy ring on the surface. It leaves some nice spots of lacing on the glass.

Aroma: It has a bit of a chocolate aroma with some green pepper and a very light burnt scent.

Taste: Up front it has this burnt wood flavor which moves a bit to a chocolate flavor in the middle of the mouth. Towards the end there is a moderate bitterness mixed with a carbon flavor.

Mouthfeel: It is smooth and a bit oily but not too thick. It has a medium-weight body with more texture than a standard medium bodied beer. It feels well attenuated.

Overall: It's a good beer but there are a lot of better Imperial Stouts. The coffee is hidden behind the burnt carbon flavor but it does peak out every now and then. It's good enough to at least try once but I doubt I would buy it regularly.

Pours black with a thin tan head. Excellent bold coffee aroma and flavor.

Coffee is anything but subtle but not over powering and is well blended. Nice base with a touch of sweetness.

Very dense and rich. Good job by the folks over at Evil Twin.

Extremely dark chocolate while pouring, and jet black in the glass. Syrupy thick with a slight rocky dark chestnut head that quickly forms a ring on a Dogfish Head snifter glass. Viscosity leaves a film that washes away tiny spots of lace.

The aroma opens with rich hot fudge, roasted coffee, and alcohol. Dates, figs, and lots of plum quickly follow, as does brown sugar and licorice. Warmth brings out smoky peat.

Flavor delivers on the aromas against a canvas of deep roast and surprisingly sweet malt. The finish is long with licorice and dark chocolate. Coffee is a mild attribute.

The texture is hard and smooth, while the body is bold. While not hot, alcohol is strong. Carbonation musters a faint prickling sensation.

While I would consider this a dessert beer, it served well while reading on a cool November afternoon.
