Got this one from the Lidl in Maarssen

From a 500ml bottle into a weizen glass

APPEARANCE: Pours a 2+ finger, medium looking, creamy and frothy white head with excellent retention. Hazy, opaque gamboge orange with piles of carbonation evident. Head has mega staying power, eventually fading to a full, foamy cap and leaving lacing on the glass. A half wisp remains until the end and leaves some decent lacing down the glass as it empties.

SMELL: Wheat malt, some lemon aromas, bubble gum as well as some banana esters on the nose. Bold and ticks all the right boxes.

TASTE: Lots of wheat malt and bubble gum flavors up front, with some banana and lemon esters as well. Wheat and estery finish with a bold and lingering aftertaste of wheat, bubble gum, lemon and banana esters, clove flavors and some bready notes. Good.

PALATE: Medium-fuller body with medium carbonation. Creamy and smooth on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes slightly mouth-coating.

OVERALL: This is a solid find at the Lidl for less than a euro. Looks nice, smells good and meets the standards of a solid, enjoyable weizen beer. I think if this liquid was in another bottle, people might rate is higher than they already do. I am certainly happy with it and will definitely be getting more whenever I hit the Lidl.

For days I did something I do not usually do: buy a white beer brand from a large supermarket chain. I do not like that they fool me. He says that he is made in Munich but is not made with the Bavaria quality seal.

The Yeast is dominating too much, even for a Hefeweizen. There's just not much else coming through and it ends up as a one note Weizen.

L- Dark amber when held up to the light and slightly hazy. Quite brisk rising CO2 into a 2Cm creamy fat head of fine bubbles that is holding very impressively. (suggest you pour v slowly the head forms readily on the pour).
S- Apples is the prominent thing I get
T- It has a very slight sourness I'm not used to in a weissbier, not necessarily a negative just a little unexpected to me. A taste of apple is quite distinct, some sweetness comes towards the end.
F- It's sweeter than I'd expect. I lived for 3 years in Berlin and visited Munich and elsewhere in Bavaria on several occasions. I drunk a load of German beers and this in unlike the weissbiers from the traditionalists like Paulaner and Augustiner. It is outright sweeter, and effectively mono-dimensional in flavour...
O- ... the by now very prominent apple flavour is frankly also well over-emphasised. And unfortunately the sweetness means I don't find this refreshing. If sampling this I'd suggest chilling very thoroughly. £1.25/500ml from Lidl and perhaps a case of getting what you pay for. BB 24/09/19. From Lidl. In Bavaria hefe glass. Playing Avernum 3. Fairly decent for the cheap price. Typical notes of a hefe are here, with a good feel. Maybe its a bit metallic but nothing excessive

Weissbier from Lidl, about time. Looks great, flavour not as good as most of the big boys; Paulaner, Augustiner etc.

However, when you consider that this beer costs £1.39 (in Scotland) it is a no brainer.

Lidl and Aldi should really be doing more stuff like this, they are German after all. Helles, Schwarzbier, Rauchbier, Bock, Maerzen......C'mon you can do it.

Prost

Bottle, Lidl.

Looks the part, feels the part but the taste and aroma let it down somewhat. Sweetshop nose and taste, bit fake for want of a better word.
