It pours dark copper with a pillowy tan-ish head of good retention. The aroma has a lot of coffee notes which I did not expect at all. The taste is well balanced between the malts and hops but there is also a lingering burnt toast element to it (and some metallic notes too). The mouthfeel is pretty light and with a fairly string carbonation bite.

Pours an amber brown with a white head. Smells of sweet malts, German yeast, and nuttiness. Tastes of roasted malts, earthiness, bread, and some sweetness. Medium in body and carbonation. This is a great German Lager. One of the better I've had.

I was recently at Hunger-n-Thirst's bottle shop, noodling around as I am wont to do, when the duty attendant asked if I was interested in a German series that had recently arrived. My ears perked up and my curiosity piqued, especially knowing that I was close to a German horizontal anyway. Once I saw them & their relatively inexpensive cost, I was sold! I am now continuing where I left off last night.

From the bottle: "Dark Beer".

Once again, a fresh bottle means a heavy-handed pour following the Pop! of the cap. I kind of get a rush from the excitement of watching the head come rushing up & (hopefully) stopping at the lip of the glass. In this case, I had two-plus fingers of dense, light-tan head with decent retention that provided me an opportunity to measure its color. Color was Brown to Dark Brown (SRM = > 22, < 27), although closer to 22 with copper highlights. Nose had a bready maltiness with a nutty, chocolaty overtone. Mmm. I am really glad that I picked up these beers on my last visit. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was very chocolaty, more towards milk chocolate, with a light nuttiness & a biscuitiness that rendered it drier than it might have been otherwise. Finish was semi-dry and very refreshing. It was another pleasant German beer & a very good example of the style, but again, nothing to open the windows & begin shouting about. Still, at the price point, it was definitely worth a try.

these old world lagers like this get absolutely no love from the new wave beer geek, they just care about barrel aged sours, huge ipas, and stouts with funny ingredients. beers like this are like the beatles. all this other stuff isnt possible without these, and they rock awfully hard in their own right, so lets give them some love. this is a pretty darn textbook example of the style, rich decadent malt base, past caramel almost crimson brown in color, with a short and short lived white head, soda bubbles, and a lot of clarity. smells and taste nice and nutty, sweet crystal malts and maybe some vienna type malt as well, it has that filling sweeter vibe to it, but a nice earthy backbone and then the bready german lager yeast, less dusty than some, but with that ancient sort of thing going on as well. its all here. it dries out a little in the end, but there is a lingering molasses finish with the yeast there too. smooth and easy drinking though too, very classically german, and one of those beers that i would be overjoyed to have a fridge full of. the price points on this and beers like it are amazing too. $3.99 for a large bottle. hard to overlook this intersection of quality and value. pretty stoked on this overall

Grabbed a bottle from the store at the abbey.
Quite a dark dunkel, bigtan head. Was expecting some dark malt and German hops on the nose, but really didn't get much. The flavor was much bigger. Lots of malt, some burnt caramel, and fairly sweet overall. A bit more complexity as the slightly cloying sweetness fades.
Bottom line: little nose, big flavor, too sweet.

Very subtle hoppiness with very slowly drying after taste. The aroma is basically non existent a common trait of beers in this style what does emerge is pure malt goodness. Deep malt flavor with a smooth and thin body. It goes down by gallon easy.

Poured from the bottle into a pilsner style glass.

Super dark dunkel going on here. Deep mahogany red, with dark brown and walnut edges. Excellent clarity with a moderate amount of carbonation rising through it's body. Head is fluffy to creamy like retention with a small head of about two fingers. Manages to settle slowly to a one finger puck, and stick around looking real inviting. Excellent looker.

Solid notes of clove and spice, with a caramel and sticky lager yeast. A little bit of noticeable sourness, maybe some acrid grain hiding but very small and almost comes off like a fruity ale ester, or possibly some sweet balsamic vinegar interestingly. Pretty solid.

The palate comes off with a nice thick malt action, but not horrifically sweet. Some hint of chewy hazelnut, but also a bit of sour twinge going on as well. Some mild molasses like sweetness, but missing a bit of bready toast and some anticipating bready character.

Overall though very solid brew here, with a hint of classic German character but has a bit of an odd sour quality that I can't seem to ignore. It's definitely not compromised or infected, but a decent beer with a character that sort of distracts me.
