Got a 500ml bottle from Bine and Vine, SD.
A good doppelbock, but quite flat. The taste was somewhat metallic, and there was some phenolic taste to it as well, as if there was some dead yeast. Would rather have a Celebrator or a Korbinian.

Dark walnut brown (with generous orange highlights) that becomes dusky ruby when backlit. The head is the color of toasted wheat and is a good contrast to the lucent liquid on which it sits. A short collar of lace has appeared, with more, perhaps, to follow once the stubborn cap finally relents.

The nose is gently roasted malty, dark fruity and lightly spicy. It isn't as bombastic as the biggest members of the style, but it's enjoyable all the same. Actually, repeated sniffs convince me that this is one of the spicier doppels that I've smelled. It'd be nice if that characteristic translates to the palate.

Curator is full of flavor and is a wonderful example of the style. As I'd hoped, it tastes like it smells, for the most part. I often forget that doppelbocks are lagers and shouldn't really be stout-like in the mouth. While this one isn't the biggest doppel in the race, it's in the lead pack.

Sweet, well-roasted barley is the unchallenged focal point. There aren't a huge number of accessory flavors bathing the taste buds, but then there doesn't need to be when the beer is this well-crafted. Buttery figs, dark caramel, cracked coffee bean and a wee smattering of cinnamon play supporting roles is this impressively complex lager. Delicious.

I don't know why Klosterbrauerei Ettal decided to give the American import version a higher ABV, but the alcohol is so well-buried that it doesn't really matter. If it helps depth of flavor, so much the better. The mouthfeel is medium-full with an impressive amount of lightly silky smoothness. The next highest score is only a hair's breadth away.

Ettaler Curator Dunkler Doppelbock is fantastic and should be enjoyed by lovers of quality doppelbocks and by most others as well. The fact that the recipe was created by Benedictine monks in 1609 proves that good beer is timeless.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy mahogany with a orange highlights and a thick head that splashes some lace around

Smell: Muscat-soaked raisins, fruitcake spice and a hint of tobacco

Taste: Opens with raisin, caramel and allspice flavors; by mid-palate, there is a bit of brown sugar sweetness that comes into focus; but the surprise is when the tobacco arrives, after the swallow, to add another dimension

Mouthfeel: Medium body with mild, creamy carbonation

Drinkability: By keeping the cloying tendencies in check, this beer ranks among the better doppelbocks out there

Impressive Doppelbock. Pours a clear dark amber/mahogany color with a medium size beige head that fades fast. Strong aroma of roasted malt, and dark fruit.

Taste is very good. Rich malty presence with sweetness coming from dark fruit (plums and raisins) and a molasses flavor. No alcohol taste.

Mouthfeel is rich and smooth. There is a warming presence from the alcohol but no "burn". A smooth very inviting beer.

I would seek this one out again!!!

Nice, sweet, malty doppel. Hints of fig and banana. Very solid tasting. I think this is my 2nd time and I liked it both times. Passes the test.

Growler fill from Green's PG. Poured into a Cigar City snifter.

A: Pours a deep ruby body, approaching cola; forms a quickly-dissipating beige head. Looks like a good doppelbock should.

S: Strong aroma of figs and prune juice, with some bready malt and booze accompanying. Dark and fruity, even for the style.

T: Follows the nose, with deep and juicy fig and prune flavors. Sweet, bready malt back it up--reminiscent of banana bread, almost. Striking.

M: Full-bodied, but seriously lacking carbonation. Almost flat. Apart from the carbonation issue, each sips feels nice across the palate.

O: A nice sipper, with standout fruit flavors--even for a doppelbock, this is complex and rich. I will seek it out again.

Pours with a four-finger light tan head that goes quickly leaving traces of lace. Deep clear amber color. Medium bodied and light carbonation. Malty nose. Flavor is sweet raisins, but is balanced, finishes mellow with just a hint of bitterness. $4.10 for a 500ml bottle from Tulley's Beer & Wine Wells, Me.

Appearance: Crystal clear dark mahogany. Medium sized cap of beige froth. Lacing is adequate. Inviting brew.

Aroma: Sludgey molasses. Chocolate. Currants. Rich dark malts. Brown Sugar.

Flavor: Dark fruits. Plums, blackberries and dark cherries. Molasses. Cane sugar residue. Rich malts.

Mouthfeel: No sign of EtOH. Carbonation is appropriately low. Body is medium-full.

Drinkablility: Good. This is a good dopplebock. Nothing more, nothing less. Enjoyable and one I'd gladly have again sometime.

Aroma: Malty; dried fruit; slight hop notes

Taste: Roasted malty flavor; really offsets the sweetness.

Overall: I changed my scores here. This has become my favorite Doppelbock due to the bitter grains used. Works very well together.

Picked up this 0.5l bottle at Half Time, setting me $4.99 arrears. Have already had the German version at the Kloster, so I'm interested in comparing the two versions.

Alrighty... into a Spaten stange goes the bottle's contents... The bier is a clear, striking mahogany color, with a minimum of carbo within, as well as a thin, beige head. Bubbles are fine and tight, and cling mostly to the rim. Not much lacing to speak of, though. Aroma is full of malty caramel and toffee. Smell is A-OK! Body borders on medium, at best, though it is rather smooth across the tongue, with only light prickliness.

Flavor? Nicely sweet yet never close to being cloying. There's an abundant measure of caramel and toffee coating the tongue, and quite well at that. Anything more? Maybe a touch of roastiness and dark fruit, but the sweet malts dominate. There's only a subtle suggestion of floral hopping present here, with the malts being the item to write home about. And as it warms? More malt comes your way. Hard to find the 9% ABV, too, which is a scary thought. Flavor seems to be on par with the homeland edition, though appearance and mouthfeel are slightly behind. Overall? Solid; quite solid indeed. Prosit!!

Poured a deep dark brown with some reddish hue with fluffy off-white one finger head,first thing that stuck out to me in the nose was the smokiness that goes along with the dark fruit and brown sugar and caramel sweetness the alcohol whafted a little but its not strong.Sweet up front quite sweet in fact raisins and caramel with some dark brown sugar as well a little bit of an alcohol burn going down.I notice just a slight spiciness and earthy note in the finish,its a smooth,slick doppelbock glides down easily if you like big malty sweet beers to me this would be a good winter sipper to take the chill off I ll be looking for this again come December I think.

Dark, tawny brown with ruby highlights, it pours with a meager tracing of beige lace.
The nose is an veritable collage of malt, with roastiness, charred pork fat, cinnamon, nutmeg, hazelnut, liquorice, and sherry-esque booze traits.
Upon entering the mouth, roastedness takes control, full of burnt grain, and burnt meat flavors. These linger as a spiciness wells up towing notions of anise, mace, and a peppery rye-like quality. Back into the molten malt bath, it sweetens with fig, and hazelnut, and carob. Turns vinic on the outset, with vapors of sherry and marsala.
Moderate in the mouth, and only lightly carbonated. The sweet-bent of this brew, while wine-like and notably potent, is quaffable rather than cloying or gummy.
This is a delicious dopplebock, and carries enough uniqueness to make it a must find, even if your not a normal fan of the style. Though I am, and found this absolutely entrancing.

Maroon/red when held to light, the head is full and thick, off white. The body is crystal clear with only a couple bubbles of carbonation. Smell is sweet, very sweet with brown sugar and a little banana fruitiness. Alcohol is evident, makes it a little spicy. Smooth and subtle up front, many earthy and spicey flavors reveal themselves. Sweetness is carmel and molasses, and a strong shot of alcohol. A little cloying as you keep drinking. Not sessionable at all, but has a nice moderate-to-thick mouthfeel, and is not a bad beer.

Deep dark brown color with a medium tan head and patchy lacing. The aroma is bready malt and fruit. Medium-bodied and creamy with roasted malt, fruit (raisins) and caramel flavors. The finish is tart and fruity with touches of malt. A decent enough beer, although it doesnÂ’t really fit into the Doppelbock flavor profile that I prefer.

U.S. version. 9.0%.

This one pours a dark brown, with slightly reddish tints- this is seriously one of the darker dopplebocks I've ever seen. This has a small head, and not much lacing.

This smells like very sweet dark cherry, port, booze, simple syrup, caramelized sugar, and toffee.

This is definitely one of the sweeter dopplebocks I've ever had. This is still tasty, but a little syrupy, with lots and lots of dark fruit- cherry and raisin, mostly. There's caramel syrup too, kind of like the stuff you'd put into Starbucks coffee, with toffee as well.

This is medium bodied, but very syrupy, with a lower level of carbonation.

This is decent, but pretty far from the best German brewed dopplebocks.

On tap at the Devil's Den in Philly. From notes.

Appearance: Delivered with the expected dark chestnut body capped by a frothy head of light tan foam. It's hard to tell if it's clear or not as the beer is dark and the bar is dark. The head holds quite well and leaves some thin lacing about the glass.

Aroma: The nose displays a toasty and caramelish malt. Clean. Subtly spicy (seemingly more from yeast or hops than alcohol).

Mouthfeel: It's full and creamy across the palate with a full body and very fine, median carbonation.

Flavor: The flavor is far more rich and malty than the nose suggest, and it's caramelish with a thin strand of delicate cocoa and perhaps a bit of butterscotch. Some dark fruit is present as well, but it's more on the caramelish with underlying chocolate side. It's very straightforward rich malt, and there are no hints of roastiness or smokiness or any dark malt acidity to interupt its smooth passage. In fact, there are barely any hop flavors either, excepting the spiciness, which may be coming from alcohol and /or yeast, or a combination of both. Some floral, and perhaps grassy hops do dance about in the background but they are minor in comparison to the dark maltiness. It's bitterness is also restrained, allowing the malt to shine, but it remains superbly balanced and never appears sweetish, only richly malty. Very cleanly fermented. Very nicely rounded. The alcohol is very well-cloaked and it never appears 'hot'.

Drinkability: One of the best doppelbocks I've tasted. Some go too strong, some go too complex, some are just too thin... this is very direct and very drinkable without becoming strong or heavy on the palate. Worth seeking out!

Served in at bottle at 42 deg F.

Appearance: Poured into a hefe glass. Dark mahogony color. Absolutely no head, despite an attempt to create one with an aggressive pouring technique. No bubbles or lace appeared during the drink.

Smell: As others have noted, a very fruity, raisiny smell, but I sense a very malty nose as well. Definite presence of alcohol in the aroma.

Taste: Very cloying. However after the sugar overload wears off, there is a rather pleasant malty aftertaste. Alcohol is also rather dominating.

Mouthfeel: This beer excels in this category. It is a thick, robust beer, and asserts itself well here. Alcohol provides a gentle warming sensation.

Overall: Comparing my review to others, it appears I got a stale version. There simply was no carbonation whatsoever. I wouldn't go out of my way to find this beer locally, but wouldn't turn one down if offered. Overall a middle-of-the-road Doppelbock. I've had worse, but as most others would probably attest, I'd prefer a Salvator over this one. If I can find this beer in-country, I'll post a comparison review.
