Poured from the growler I scored from the Chama River Brewing Co 3 days prior, we were serving in beer mugs. The beer retained it's jet-black color, and the thick layer of chocolate colored head was insanely dense and thick. It also did not leave the beer as you drink, remaining around an inch and a half the whole time, with a great clinging to the glass. The nose is still dark roasted coffee and booze, but it has settled and calmed a bit. The beer has a creamier feel to it now, but still dark chocolate and coffee on the palate, now a little less bitter. The beer has a creamy and smooth finish with an extremely mild and semi-sweet aftertaste. Even better after some time in the growler!

Deep dark brown with caramel edges. Cramy tan head of one finger depth
and small spotty lacing.
Nose is dominated by licorice, with broad shouldered molasses,
chocolate, dark caramel, and hefty malt chewyness. Very inviting.
Intense dark grain on the palette with a rich licorice note, anise,
dark chocolate drizzled caramel chew candies, hefty malt sweetness
that is far from cloying. A touch of boozy heat as it warms, as well
as a bit of light roast coffee.
The body is heavy with residuals and the low-medium carbonation that
is refined and fits impeccably. Definitely a highlight of the beer.
Much restraint is required to consume only a pint of this ebony
nectar. Thank heavens for growlers, as this thing needs to be consumed
on a slow session throughout the day, especially on chilly spring days
when a cold front is moving in.
