Three Heads Brewing "Too Kind Double IPA"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle without freshness dating
$2 @ Giant, Havertown, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Hazy amber body beneath a finger-thick head of frothy off-white. Dank, earthy, piney, somewhat floral, and berry-like and grapefruit/citrusy in the aroma with some gently caramelish malt behind it. The flavor follows, dank and earthy, maybe a little resinous, and dusty, floral, and piney. Ah, there's some golden caramel to the grainy malt as well. It doesn't seem particularly bitter but I guess that's because of all the malt - the bitterness in their standard "The Kind IPA" is sharper and that's just 76 IBUs. The head has now dropped but it still maintains a thin surface covering and has left broken walls of lace behind. Oddly, I feel the head retention and lacing is better in their standard IPA as well, although it might have to do with the alcohol content. .. how strong is it? 8.5% ABV... hmmm, that shouldn't have much effect. I should also note that I see it's listed at 87 IBUs, which is not a lot more than their regular's 76 so that all makes sense, they're going for a softer double IPA, which I like. I can sense the alcohol though, which is a bit odd if it is indeed just 8.5%. It feels higher. I get it at the back of the throat. As it warms a bit the malt and hops fuse somewhat and it becomes much more pleasurable as "one" rather than separate components. The lower end of medium-full in body with a gentle caress from a fine-bubbled, median carbonation. Not a bad double IPA, a little unique, and pleasant, but also a little non-congruent.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Dogfish tulip. Artwork is unappealing at best. Sort of like you crossed a hippie with Ganesh and tried to have it play hackeysack.

L: Cloudy medium golden pour. Thick off-white head leaves great lacing.

S: Lots of tropical fruit and citrus. Tangerine and pineapple.

T/F: Bready and malty to open... a little bit of caramel which leads into a reasonably fruity hop profile. Tropical fruits are present but not as robust as I'd expected. Some definite citrus and peppercorn.. a bit of mango. Moderately bitter. Medium body. Finish is sticky citrus which lingers a bit on the tongue.

O: A reasonably good DIPA. Not spectacular but solid enough to have again.

Poured into a custom shaped pint glass: color is gold to copper, head is off white, color is a little hazy, some lacing on the glass.

Smell is a little muddled between hops and malt: hop aroma is citrus and some pineapple like notes, malt is biscuity, light toast.

Taste is similar to the aroma: hop/malt blend that is hard to decipher - flavors not too strong or clean for either; hops are citrus and earthy, malt has a biscuit like note; some strong fusel alcohol presence.

Mouthfeel just seems off to me - very sharp and biting on the tongue, but not in the form of dry/hoppy bitterness.

Overall an ok DIPA with some off presence and flavors.

A-pours a straw yellow, slightly golden color with a white head with decent retention and lacing
S-lots of orange citrus, some pine, wheat/bready aroma
T-some citrus followed by tons of pine and resiny bitterness, long lingering bitterness on the palate
M-medium bodied with average carbonation, slightly dry finish
O-wish there was more citrus and fruit in the flavor, as the aroma is a bit misleading. overall not a bad DIPA

Artwork: As attractive as a tonsil stone. Not much else I can say about this.

Appearance: Dark amber with about an inch of head that sticks around for a couple of minutes.

Nose: No idea how fresh this was, but the nose doesn't offer much in terms of hops. Pretty malty and you pick up the booze too. Not unpleasant.

Taste: Malts, fairly bitter, some spice, booze.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body. Nice level of carbonation.

Overall: I think it's about time I give up on DIPAs. They just don't do it for me so I should not single this particular beer out. Had a tough time finishing it. Perhaps it's my (admittedly unreasonable) expectation for every beer (regardless of style) to have some thirst-quenching qualities. Or maybe it's that this was an older bottle, but then again how could I tell when there is no bottling date on it?
