Enjoyed a half pint of Puppet Show Pale on tap at Indy's newcomer Black Swan off 70 just west of the airport. New brewers, new beer, new brewpub: Hoosier luck!

Arrived bright straw yellow with orange highlights in a half pint glass; one finger of light foam dissipated leaving little evidence it existed. Nose is layered but clean: some nutty highlights and a clean, grassy hop nose.

Taste is clean and crisp: a light session beer with some surprises: roasted hazelnut and vanilla flavors becomes more pronounced as the beer warms, bringing balance. Light mouthfeel.

Puppet Show Pale Ale is a light, bright pale offered by Indianapolis newcomers Flat12. Wasn't a big fan of their last 2 tried at Black Swan, but this is a solid performer. Aroma is outstanding, with some subtle complexities: nutty, almost vanilla ice cream notes: buttery. A different take on pale ale. Welcome, nice.

On tap at Tom Tap Room

A: A little cloudy golden straw color bordering on copper
S: Pretty assertive floral nose with hints of woodiness
T: The hops are upfront with no malt balance at all. The hops used actually have a soapy quality to them that I don't enjoy. The bitterness isn't balanced at all with the malt.
M: The astringent bitterness wasn't welcome on this one.
O: I was pretty excited when I smelled this one, but the flavor just isn't there. I am a hophead for sure, but the bitterness just wasn't good on this beer and was one dimensional.

I think Flat 12 does an awesome job with dark beers (esp. the porter) , but I just didn't enjoy this one.

Purchased a growler, orignally tried to purchase a seperate beer but they only had a little left so i pulled this trigger on this one without tasting it.

A - a little reddish tint to it actually, so maybe a bit different for an APA. other than that its clear with a nice head and lacing on it.

S - sweet and malty smelling. i would really like there to be more of a hop presence in this beer.

T - you can definitely taste the bitterness but there isn't much hop flavor or aroma to it which makes it taste like its lacking pretty substantially. i would probably think this was maybe an ESB if it was a blind tasting.

M - crisp and dry

O - i like supporting local breweries but this one won't be purchased again. its just pretty lacking. considering this brewery makes some great porters i probably should have stuck to that style but i just like trying things.

their half cycle ipa is decent, but if you really want a good local ipa I'd head up to Bier Brewery.
