Black with ruby highlights. Massive head of bone-toned foam. Attractive lace.

Nose is rich, dark, bittersweet chocolate. I get a hint of hops, but it's pretty obscure.

Taste is nicely hopped, followed by a roasty charred finish. A solid and enjoyable brew combining some usually disparate styles.

Also of note -- I love the stark, dark, and stylish bottle art.

More Flat 12 beers being bottled is perfectly alright with me. Cheers to growing breweries!

A: Thin head of tan bubbles, thin texture to the body, but with a color as deeply black as beer can be. Lacing and retention are sparse.

S: A bold nose of dark, delectable flavor: freshly roasted coffee, burnt toast, brownie batter, and rich maple stand out the most. Breakfast in a glass, nearly, but with emphasis on the aromas of roast malt. Slight foray into hoppiness as pine peaks near the end of the nose.

T: Pronounced bitterness all the way around, starting with sharp, spicy hop tones of pine and pepper. As the bitters swell, this beer’s roasted character arrives in full force, bringing the level of astringency even higher – powerful tastes of charred wood and dark chocolate, supported by toasted bread crust, peat, and warm pumpernickel. Make no mistake, this is a very bitter beer. Finishes with a dry, burnt biscuit taste that lasts for minutes at a time.

M: Feels pretty thin, but with a good amount of frothy carbonation, it goes down inoffensively. In fact, the flavors are so crisp that any more kick might be too much, so this texture works well.

O: This is a beer worthy of a six-pack purchase, at least. While balance isn’t exactly the name of the game here, the flavors contained here are too big for this little bottle; this is a damn satisfying drink.

On tap at Fiddler's Hearth in South Bend.

Pours near black with a good off white head and a pretty good amount of lacing. Nose has roast and citrus with a slight earthy character. Good flavor with a bit too much roast. Medium body with a dry finish. Plenty of roast and hops. Pretty good.
