In honor of Officer Mathias Degan, the first of 8 of Chicago's Finest to lose their lives in the line of duty during the Haymarket Affair. A massive American style Imperial IPA hopped and dry hopped with 3 pounds per barrel of Citra. We feel Mathias is a proper representation of the strength and courage of our Boys in Blue. Raise one to thank the fine Officers of the Chicago Police Department for their sacrifice.

finally, a local, fresh substitute for zombie dust! the only problem is it's $27 a growler plus $5 for the initial one. When your growler pricing is more than 3 floyds, you may want to rethink some things.
A: orangeish light amber. decent white head and lacing. light haze.
S: delicious citra hops-citrus and tropical fruit, above a honeyed, doughy malt base.
T: follows suit. medium to full sweet malts perfectly balanced by smooth, juicy hop bitterness and flavors.
M: at 10%, obviously bigger bodied than zombie dust. carbonation seems a bit light against this more viscous mouthfeel.
O: hell yeah. i was planning on sharing the growler i brought home, but will be selfish.

12oz can
PKD DEC0122
L: clear, caramel colored ale with bubbly carbonation maintaining a persistent beige colored foamy head
S: caramel malt, brown sugar, citrus, stone fruit
T: sweet malts up front with notes of caramelized grain, toffee, and brown sugar; hoppy bitterness is pine & grapefruit, with some fruity nectarine and peach in the mix as well
F: medium body, ample carbonation, finish is dry and bitter with some residual sweetness along for the ride
O: I’ve wanted to try this one for awhile…it was worth the wait! Classic west-coast flavors.

Pours a dark amber, like an amber ale would. No head, little lacing. For a dipa, it's not too boozy are syrupy. Overall, I'd get it again if I was looking for a higher abv beer, but I'd rather have 2 regular ipas. This is probably the best haymarket beer I've had.

I recognize Mathias is on The Chicago Haymarket list. But the bartender across the road from the Bridgman taproom swears that Mathias is brewed here. And since bartenders are reliable sources in their field, I added Mathias to make this point.
As for the DIPA, I have almost never rated above the average and I am unlikely to change that pattern.

12 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 3/28/2019. Pours slightly hazy deep golden/orange/amber color with a 1 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big red grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, guava, gooseberry, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, honey, caramel, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and dark/bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big red grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, guava, gooseberry, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, honey, caramel, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of red grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, guava, gooseberry, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine, honey, caramel, toasted biscuit, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and dark/bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and no cloying/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready/grainy/sticky, and fairly crisp/resinous/rindy balanced mouthfeel that is great. Minimal warming alcohol for 8%. Overall this is an excellent DIPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical/earthy hops and dark/bready malt flavors; very smooth, easy, and fairly crisp to drink for the ABV; with the modestly bitter/resinous/drying finish, not overly aggressive. Great Citra profile. Very juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hops; with a great balancing dark/bready malt backbone. Light residual sweetness with lingering crisp resin dryness. A very enjoyable offering, and impressive spot on Midwest style example.

9/19/18 (Chicago): $6.75 12 oz draft pour into snifter at Haymarket Brewery. Amber pour, white thin lacing. Sharp mango and orange aroma, balanced with strong hops blend. Slightly dry crisp hops taste and mouth feel. Friut blend taste not as strong as aroma would steer you toward, but what did flow through with the flavor was very good. Thin light texture, slightly dry, easy summer drinking. Overall, a very solid pour.
