Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
In honor of Officer Mathias Degan, the first of 8 of Chicago's Finest to lose their lives in the line of duty during the Haymarket Affair. Copious amounts of Citra Hops deliver wonderful citrus and mango notes. At 10% ABV, we feel Mathias is a proper representation of the strength and courage of our Boys in Blue. Raise one to thank the fine Officers of the Chicago Police Department for their sacrifice.

This is the beer that started my lifelong quest to recreate that first, great IPA experience. One day I'll make it back up to Chicago and see if my journey changes this rating in retrospect, but until then (or until my next revelatory beer experience), this is the beer to beat.

As I recall, the Mathias IPA was extraordinarily hoppy, but the first IPA I had ever tried in which the hops character wasn't just bitter punch in the teeth, but was balanced robustly on the other end by a heavy dose of sweet malt. The flavor is super-citrusy, and tasted almost perfectly like an alcoholic grapefruit (even more than grapefruit-infused IPAs I've had since).

Again, this is definitely rose-colored glasses talking, but this beer is definitely worth making the trip to Haymarket if you are an American IPA fan visiting downtown Chicago.

Citralicious fruity hops.
The new gold standard in DIPA -- I am spoilled for all others.
You need to have this fresh at the brewpub and it is glorious.
If you are a hop person -- you will love it.

Even if you do not think you are a hop person -- try this one. For those who are coming from the dark side (bocks, imp stouts and belgians) as they enter the beer scene -- this citrus hop bomb has enough fruit and sweetness to turn their palates.

A really world class beer -- worth the trip to chicago alone. Lucky for you there are many other good things to drink once you are here...

Beautiful glowing color, and the wafting of fruity hops greets you. The taste follows through with everything the appearance promises. Great body too.

finally, a local, fresh substitute for zombie dust! the only problem is it's $27 a growler plus $5 for the initial one. When your growler pricing is more than 3 floyds, you may want to rethink some things.
A: orangeish light amber. decent white head and lacing. light haze.
S: delicious citra hops-citrus and tropical fruit, above a honeyed, doughy malt base.
T: follows suit. medium to full sweet malts perfectly balanced by smooth, juicy hop bitterness and flavors.
M: at 10%, obviously bigger bodied than zombie dust. carbonation seems a bit light against this more viscous mouthfeel.
O: hell yeah. i was planning on sharing the growler i brought home, but will be selfish.

Had on tap during the WBEZ tasting

A) Golden Copper color with a two finger head, cloudy some visible nucleation.

S) When the bartender handed it to me I could smell while it was still in his hands. Citrus fruits, dank, honey, bread, very sweet smelling beer.

T) Citrus, skittles, honey, bread, very tasty can't taste the alcohol at all.

M) creamy and juicey medium amount of carbonation

O) Absolutly great! Reminds me of Clown Shoes Galatica or Piepworks Citra Ninja.

Citrusy and packs an alcohol punch @ 9%, one of my favorites from Haymarket who continues to put out fantastic beer.

Cloudy but bright orange beer with prominent lacing. Smells like a tropical hop explosion and tastes like it too--my boyfriend thought this was the best beer he had all year, and we don't usually like Citra, so that's saying something. A very rich and juicy tropical hop flavor, mango, bubble-gum, grapefruit, orange, pineapple, just a touch of caramel malt, with a thick mouthfeel.

My notes mostly just say "wow" again and again... best imperial IPA ever? It may well be.
