Finally got to tick this brew, during Haymarket's 5th Anniversary Party (I flew out to Chicago, from Delaware), just for the chance to try this legend. And it did not disappoint! Rich, lush, velvety, full-bodied chocolate raspberry stout, with excellent depth, body, and mouthfeel. And I got to meet Clare & Pete as well. Fabulous experience. If you like chocolate and raspberry in your stout, this is the best one out there, so go get some!

This one is pure raspberry up front and one of the better raspberry beers that I've had. It smells of fresh raspberry juice, chocolate and roasted malt. The taste is just like a chocolate covered raspberry dipped in whiskey. The chocolate is definitely dark as you get a slight bitter and roasted aspect from it. If you see this at Haymarket, you need to get some as it is one of the best fruit stouts I've had.

L: Pours a thick onyx and mocha stream with a 1cm sandy head and moderate lacing
S: Dark chocolate covered raspberries
T: Incredibly decadent - silky milk chocolate, cacao nibs, and ripe raspberries burst on the palate; the barrel is well integrated and provides a substantive base for the beer
F: Medium thickness with a velvety/smooth mouthfeel and ample carb
O: Man, this is dessert in a glass and well executed. While the caliber of beer is on par with Backyard Rye, I'm not sure I fully agree with the comparisons given the different fruits/flavors. Nevertheless, this is an elite stout and probably the best raspberry stout I've ever had. Absolutely worth seeking out - hope they offer this for growler fills again in the near future. Cheers, Haymarket!

Glad I tracked down a growler of this!!! This turned out to be as good as everybody says! Hard to get! They need to bottle this beautiful Rick chocolate and raspberry BA stout!

2016: Draft at the brewpub, full snifter sample. Big tart fruity raspberry presence, more natural than in the past. Juicy and drinkable, slightly thin though still packs a punch. Reminded me in some ways of Blue Gene, with different fruit.

2015: 4.21
Fobab sample, much improved with better integrated natural raspberry flavors.
Melded well with the big chocolate from the base imperial stout.

2013: 3.5
Fobab sample, somewhat oxidized and tasted artificial like raspberry tootsie rolls.

Look: Pitch black, dark khaki head that quickly dissipates leaving a bit of lining, medium carbonation.

Smell: My lord. A metric f***ton on raspberry (obviously), french vanilla, dark chocolate, a lot of bourbon sweetness.

Taste: The most fruit I've ever gotten out of a stout, even more than fresh BCBS Bramble. Super strong raspberry, a bit of roastiness towards the back end, decadent dark chocolate truffle, vanilla, sweetness bordering on playfully cloying, a bit of tartness. Jammy as f'. You're doing yourself a disservice if you don't allow this to warm up and open up. Incredible.

Mouthfeel: Heavy but not Bourbon County heavy. Loads of residual sugars, smooth with a surprising touch of prickly carbonation. The beer definitely coats the tongue.

2016 on draft December 2016

Look - medium thickness with minimal head

Smell - straight raspberries and chocolate. Very little barrel
Taste - heavy raspberries. Very sweet, however, the chocolate mixes in nicely too. minimal barrel

Feel - below average thickness

Overall - an overall excellent beer, however, the "Baby Backyard" ratings seem a bit off to me because there is almost no barrel presence and the berry flavor are overly potent. That said, it's still an excellent beer, but I'm not willing to crown it at this point.
