Growler shared by Thorpe429. Thanks Mike. The beer is dark brown with a thin, sparse head. The aroma offers roast, oak, wine, sweet liquor, possibly brandy. Rich and full flavored. Full bodied with very low carbonation. Complex and delicious. Silky smooth on the palate with lingering barrel characteristics in the aftertaste.

On-tap thrice: at FoBAB, Haymarket, and Jerry's Sandwiches. Served in various glassware.

A - A dark reddish foam settles to a thick collar, with good retention and a few specks of lace. Body is pitch black.

S - Big port and dark fruit sweetness, baker's chocolate, not much oak presence. Reminds me a lot of Darkness '08 actually. When I had this on a fresher palate at Haymarket, I noticed a bit more bourbon but it's fairly mild.

T - The taste is also very sweet, with peppery grape notes, and bit more roast and oak than the aroma suggest. There's a bit of dark chocolate and anise in the finish, perhaps a bit of vanilla as well. The Haymarket version had a bit less sweetness than the FoBAB one, but this beer was more consistent across the multiple servings.

M - Big and sticky, medium-full in body, with low carbonation and some surprising but mild vinous acidity. Not much alcohol presence at all.

D - This was nice, although I think I prefer the original bourbon version by a small margin. Still, if you like sweet and fruity stouts it's hard to go wrong with this one. Nice complexity too; this one grew on me as it warmed up.
