Aromas and flavors of tropical fruit, citrus peel and pine needles dominate this brew. Two row malted barley, Belgian Caramunich, and Victory malt were used to create a malt backbone that can handle 40 pounds of seven different hops and two dry hop additions.

Let me preface by saying that I enjoy a lot of different beers, and while near perfect, i've never given a beer a solid 5 across the board. That ends today after just sampling a pint of Rail Spur Double IPA from the Burbon Barrels.

The head on this beer is phenomenal, pours a monster 4" head that remains throughout with a white pillowy cast net of lacing along the inside of the pint. Smells of intense hops flavors of citrus, pine, earth and tropical fruits with a whiskey backnote. It's like the most heavenly beer/rootbeer cross-smell that makes me think of childhood.

Taste is also astounding. The immediate presence of the assertive hops spells itself out across the tongue like a noble hop blitzkreig across the mouth. Malts kick in to provide some balance, and the whiskey is barely attainable until the end of the swallow, when it comes to the forefront leaving you wanting more.

Mouthfeel is a complex melange of rich, slick and warming beer. Overall, this might become my favorite DIPA of all time. Where a beer like Ballast Point's sculpin is a lesson in subtle balances to a path of excellence, Rail Spur is a complete crash course in assertive balance that certainly doesn't leave you wanting at all. You must try it.

Fairly similar to the regular rail spur DIPA. single finger head on an amber and crimson body, clearer than the regular. Aroma and flavor are both very similar. Pine and orange peel in both. The flavor has more of a the bourbon notes than the aroma with the spicey/peppery finish not as evident as in the regular version. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. Overall a fairly drinkable for a bourbon barreled DIPA.
