Had on-tap at Universal Joint Asheville. Served in a Foothills pint glass.

A- Pours a dark reddish amber with a 1/4 inch off-white head that doesn't retain long before becoming a thin ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of sheer surface foam.

S- Mild hop aroma plus some semisweet malt but not much else.

T- The first thing I notice is how watery it tastes but I've come to expect this from Catawba. The flavor profile is that of a hoppy red but the hop bitterness and flavors are muted. Also not much of a malt backbone. In a word, bland.

M- Slightly sharp from the hops and, as stated in the flavor category, watery. Medium-low carbonation and a body leaning toward the lighter side.

O- I knew going into this I probably wouldn't be thrilled with it since I find all of Catawba's beers to be average at best. But it was on special for $3.50 and I wanted something hoppy. If I had it to do all over again, I would've shelled out the extra money for a Rampant, but tickers gotta tick.

Appearance: amber in color with a 1" head that lingers around a while.

Smell: earthy tones with some caramel are all you can detect.

Taste: caramel, bread, orange, some earthy bitterness. a hint of nuts, and a fruity sweetness.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Lightly crisp throughout.

Overall: a moderately bitter red ale that hits the spot while looking for a red ale.

Fairly decent IPA. If they called it a Red/Amber Ale it would have rated even higher!!!! Pours a crystal clear Reddish Amber color with a good, medium size slightly off white head. Head retention is good and there is plenty of frothy, patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma is slightly sweet caramel malt and fairly decent hops bitterness. Taste is pretty good. There is a decent balance between the sweet malt and some citrus hops. Mouthfeel is light, crisp and has a decent amount of bitterness. It is all in the labeling - would have been an excellent Red Ale but still an OK IPA.

Nice color and good lacing on my glass, but this is about the taste. The other reviewers got this right. For an airport beer (Charlotte) this is pretty good, but if your looking for an IPA, you can do better. Yes I'll have another here at the Carolina Beer Co in CLT, but only because the options are Goose Island and I just can't support fake craft.
