Brewed by:
Catawba Brewing Co.
North Carolina, United States | website

Style: Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This robust, deep mahogany ale is brewed in the classic Scottish "wee heavy" style featuring a profound maltiness and a restrained hop character Six different brewing grains layer on caramel and toffee sweetness, but the beer seems magically balanced when it reaches your palate. Use caution though. This Hooligan will blow your bagpipes!

For a long time, Catawba Valley Brewery only had three beers available, so I was surprised to see this beer on the shelves on a recent trip up to Asheville.

Appearance 3.75: Pours out a beautiful, dark brown with a 1/4" creamy tan head. Good lacing.

Smell 3.75: Good bouquet. Lots of maltiness, along with a deep caramel. Also, you can detect a grassy hop and a slight biscuit scent.

Taste 4.0: Front is slightly sweet and this blends into the Middle, where a delicious, deep, caramel/slightly smoked grain flavor comes rolling out a sweeps over the palate. This is very tasty without being overly sweet. Finish is all about "sweeping up" from the middle: residual malt, caramel and slight British hop grassiness. The Finish is also long, slightly smoky and somewhat dry. Aftertaste is short, dry and pleasing.

Mouthfeel 4.0: Silky smooth and a perfect complement to the style.

Overall 4.0: Outstanding Scotch "Wee Heavy." Big without being obnoxious and there is no hint of the 8% ABV. Excellent balance of flavors at every level. This is actually light enough in the mouth to be a sessioner, just make plans beforehand to call in sick to work the next day. Definitely worth a purchase if you are lucky enough to find it on the shelf at your local beer store. Recommended.

Pours a rich mahogany with a thinner beige head atop.Brown sugar, caramel, and dark fruit in the nose,a hint of roasted nut is detected as well.a little flat in the feel, comes off a little slick.Dark fruit and caramel flavors with a touch of drying earth in the finish. Not bad but it lacks a little complexity and even more so,some body.

12 oz can into a lager glass. Canned near the end of Dec. 2015, if I am reading the coding correctly.
Pours clear dark brown but nearly opaque in the glass. Good head and decent lacing initially, but weak retention.
Aroma: Dark roasted grains and dark dried fruits.
Flavor: largely follows the aroma; nicely rich; a touch of smoke.
Feel: medium+ body with near medium carbonation.

Absolutely no head, even on a hard pour, despite some abnormally large CO2 bubbles, which dissipate then leave the brew with little carbonation. Definitely a sweeter brew, but not cloyingly so.

A: Pours a slightly hazy opaque deep mahogany in color with light to moderate amounts of active visible carbonation along the edges of the glass and moderate ruby red highlights. The beer has a finger tall foamy beige head that reduces to a medium to large sized patch covering a little less than half the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of dark fruits (plums and figs), caramel malts, and earthy hops.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of dark + caramel malts with a moderate amount of dark fruit (plum + fig), caramel, and toffee sweetness. That is followed by light flavors of earthy hops which impart a hint of bitterness which fades away pretty quickly.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: This is a pretty easy drinking, albeit quite malty scotch ale with well hidden alcohol. Nice complexity and richness of flavors/aromas in a fairly sweet brew. I'd have another one of these for sure.

Ashville brewery; an excellent scotch ale, but at 8%, too strong to drink with reckless abandon.

2014 vintage.

Aroma is very caramel laden, with nutty, toasted malt countering dark fruit notes of cherry and plum. There's a hint of smoke/peat.

Flavor is similar, with an overly bitter finish. The dark fruit barely dominates. Malt is a bit hollow in the finish.

Poured a solid black with no head at all.

Smells of sweet malts, a little smoke.

The taste is sweet malts, cherry, plums.

The mouthfeel is a little on the thin side with some alcohol in the finish. I don't normally mind a bit of alcohol flavor but this doesn't work here.

A reasonable attempt at the style but there's a few breweries in asheville making a better scotch ale.
