May 1st, 2015 - The Stupid Stout is a favorite in our household, and we mourn it's disappearance from shelves when it rotates off-season. Finding a barrel aged Stupid Stout was an especially exciting moment (even knowing full well that barrel aging can sometimes be a distraction from good beers.) The tasting begins by behold the huge smell, packed with liquor aged figs and licorice and the juiciest grapes imaginable. Plums stretched with juice and sweet flesh also define the aroma, causing pangs of hunger for a decadent dessert. The body is foamy with a lovely palate, and the residual alcohol gives it some spine, at the same time at it cuts through a thick and viscous palate. The flavor is most akin to chocolate covered beef jerky which I find stupendous. And this odd combination of tastes is dusted with notes of roasted macadamia nuts. It is rich, decadent and luxurious, and many layers of excellent.

I'd ordered the base beer and the 2015 barrel-aged Stupid Stout a few months ago - both have been sitting in my cellar since then. For some reason, I just wasn't particularly psyched about this beer - when a barrel-aged vintage is so easily obtained, I get a little bit suspicious as to why.
Stupid Stout isn't a bad beer - it has a decent chocolate nose, and there subtle barrel and bourbon notes to it. The base beer seems to show through quite a lot though - it's thin, and tastes like a sad little export stout. The alcohol content doesn't seem to be quite up to par for a BA beer, and I suspect it didn't sit in bourbon barrels for terribly long.
On the plus side, the adjuncts and the beer itself have blended well. There's none of the acetone and heat in any number of other barrel-aged beers. Then again, it's also a fairly boring drinker in general - nothing truly stands out about it. If it were a shelfie and accessible in that way, I could definitely endorse this one. Californians may have a different take. I found Stupid Stout to be eminently boring.

5300th review! 22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 12/15/2016. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, fudge, marshmallows, coffee, nuttiness, vanilla, cream, bourbon, toasted oak, and brown bread; with light notes of smoke, coconut, dark fruit, molasses, and roast/toast/oak earthiness. Some increasing booze in the aromas as it warms, but not overwhelming. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt and bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of huge milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, fudge, marshmallows, coffee, nuttiness, vanilla, cream, bourbon, toasted oak, and brown bread; with light notes of smoke, coconut, dark fruit, molasses, and roast/toast/oak earthiness. Light roast bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, fudge, marshmallows, coffee, nuttiness, vanilla, cream, bourbon, toasted oak, brown bread, light smoke/coconut, and roast/toast/oak earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of ark/roast/bready malt and bourbon barrel flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and full body; with a very smooth, rich, creamy, silky, and velvety mouthfeel that is awesome. Minimal chalky roast, oak tannins, or dryness. Mildly warming alcohol for 10%, with zero barrel booziness. Overall this is an amazing barrel aged imperial stout! All around incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of ark/roast/bready malt and bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV. Definitely a completely different experience vs the base beer when I had it; which was much more bitter like a Russian imperial stout. This is much more rich, silky, and smooth; with a pretty much perfect balance of the barrel character. Never overwhelming or boozy at all. An extremely delicious offering.

22oz bottle, $16? Dark black, huge light tan head. Fruity aroma, mild booze. Flavor is only mildly boozy, chocolate, fruit, not a lot of barrel but this is still pretty good.

2015 vintage; drank 5/8/15 @ the Yarchives.
Poured from the bottle into a glass.
Black appearance.
A rough pour yielded a huge dark tan head; frothy lace.
Oak, fresh earth, sweet bourbon & milk chocolate notes in the nose.
Thick mouthfeel.
Milk chocolate & fresh earth flavors up front; harsh bourbon heat on the finish. Too boozy for this timid soul; a touch too sweet as well. Tough for me to finish.
