Very Good
Notes: Collaboration with Cigar City Brewing

This collaboration represents a unique fusion of styles and balance. It was brewed when CCB brewmaster Wayne Wambles and owner and CEO Joey Redner visited San Diego late last year. The name “Jurata” (pronounced Yoo-‐rah-‐tuh) is Polish for “sea”, and rings true with both Coronado and Cigar City beside opposite oceans. It is also a mythical mermaid in the Baltic Sea.

Pours a smallish dark tan head (~1/2 finger) atop a dark black brew. Retention is surprisingly good, and lacing is thin but pretty.

Dark fruit and roasted barley aroma. Slightly boozy with a hint of cream and coffee. Quite typical of porters and stouts. Nothing particularly stands out.

Surprisingly bitter up forward, with a sour tinge that lasts throughout. Dark fruit give it a hint of sweetness after the initial wave of bitterness. A huge wave of roasted barley crests midway, and you ride it the rest of the way through, waving quickly to coffee notes as you ride past.

Silky and lively, not particularly thick, but extremely drinkable. Sticky finish.

This is a quite tasty Baltic Porter, with the huge roasted grains you'd expect from a stout, and the smooth drinkability of a lager. An excellent marriage of the styles. My only complaint is that there is little that stands out; no real calling card.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours nearly opaque dark brown color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, dark bread, brown sugar, light coffee, herbal, light dark fruits, and roast/yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, dark bread, light coffee, brown sugar, herbal, light dark fruit, and roast/yeast earthiness. Light roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, roast, toast, dark bread, light coffee, brown sugar, herbal, light dark fruit, and roast/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt and earthy yeast ester flavors; with solid robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy, and lightly chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice and pleasant Baltic porter. Good complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt and earthy yeast ester flavors; and very smooth to sip on. Not as bold or robust as I was hoping for, but is a nicely enjoyable offering.

A - Dark brown pour with slight carbonation and a minimal tan head.

S - Roasted malt, brown sugar, and a slight bit of licorice.

T - Blend of sweet and roasted malt There is a pronounced hoppiness in the finish. Flavors of chocolate, anise, and molasses round this out.

M - A little thin for the style, but is smooth and easy on the palate.

O - Interesting collaboration from Cigar City and Coronado. Worth trying even if it is a bit of a novelty.
