A pint at the brewery in Coronado. Better than I expected. True to style, it’s super crisp and drinkable with a delicious malt bill and a hint of hops in the finish. Seriously good.

Pours a fariyl clear yellow with fine, soapy head.

Smell is clean and bready with some citrus and floral notes.

Taste is clean and crisp with a surprising amount of citrus, grapefruit in particular. Some nice floral hops and a mild bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation.

Overall, a very tasty and summery pilsner, maybe not entirely true to style, but very good.

8oz glass at Beer Revolution YEG Oliver Square. Apparently, this is 'pretty darned good', according to the unsolicited advice from the server.

This beer appears a mostly clear, pale golden yellow colour, with a thin cap of wispy and bubbly off-white head, which leaves a bit of silly string pattern lace around the glass as things slowly progress.

It smells of grainy and crackery cereal malt, Hall's throat lozenges, a bit of generic citrus rind, and some earthy, herbal, and musky floral green hop bitters. The taste is bready and grainy pale malt, a muddled pome and citrus fruitiness, wet black peppercorns, and more leafy weedy, and estery floral verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly active in its palate-tickling frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and generally smooth, with just a hint of indistinct hop acridity making a few waves on this metaphorical coast. It finishes off-dry, the malt and strange hoppiness presiding.

Overall - this comes across as one weird bird of a brew to me, as the hop treatment makes it taste like no other Pilsner that I have ever encountered, American or otherwise. Unfortunately it's actually a tad off-putting, and I'm glad to only have ordered the smaller (and cheaper) option.

This pours a pale white gold with decent foam. Labeled as a California style pilsner, so I guess, uh, hoppy? It's a rounded hop aroma, slightly floral. Crisp, grassy, clear.

This beer pours a pale yellow with a large head. The aroma bright and bready, with cracker and biscuit malts, black pepper, orange zest, lemon zest, clove, flowers, and a slight woodsiness. The flavor is slightly sweet and bready upfront, with wheat cracker and biscuit malt, then black pepper, raw grain, nutmeg, cereal grains, and lemon and orange zest. The mouthfeel is light, bright, and crisp, with piquant carbonation. Overall this is a tasty craft American pilsner, bright and clean, with just the right amount of hop.

Canned on date of 05/30/17

Appearance - Pours mostly clear and golden yellow in color with a white, near finger width head.Fair retention results in a thin, broken layer of suds with a thin ring around the edge of the glass. No lacing save a handful of small spots found here and there.

Smell - Aroma hits on notes of hay, light grass and lemon hoppiness with a touch of grainy earth.

Taste - Follows the nose. Malts are bready with some dirty hay and grain undertones, while the hops come through mid-taste with light grassy bitterness, spice and some faint, bright citrus character. Bittersweet finish.

Mouthfeel - Light-bodied with fair carbonation. Slick texture with a crisp, dry and refreshing finish. The strong point of the brew.

Overall - Pretty standard pilsner. Solid, well-made brew, but nothing that stands out flavor-wise.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Clear 15.25-oz. pilsner
From: Trader Joe’s in Mira Mesa Calif.
Price: $1.42
Purchased: June 5, 2017
Consumed: June 13, 2017
Reviewed as: German Pilsner
Misc.: Bottled on May 22, 2017 at 6:41 a.m. PT

Picked this up on a recent trip to the Mira Mesa Trader Joe’s. Not a proponent of Coronado beer, but a big fan of pilsners. Kind of intrigued by the description as the bottled read, “ California Pilsner with Czech Saaz, Cluster & German Hallertau Hops.” Figured as much in the Saaz and Hallertau, but California was the curious part.

Poured a straw clear color with 4-to-5 fingers of rocky white head. Lots of bubbles swirling around underneath as expected. World-class uneven foamy lacing. Almost perfect retention. (Sight - 4.50)

Got a punch of pilsner notes into the nose from the get-go. Specifically got grass, hay, corn cereal, Saaz hops, grain, white cracker and a touch of honey. (Smell - 3.75)

Tasted was pleasantly as good, maybe even better, than the nose. Spicy Czech Saaz up front. Also hay, grass, grain, corn cereal, sourdough bread and lemon pepper. (Taste - 4.00)

Light body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Dry finish. (Feel - 4.00)

Wow. This was surprisingly good. A rare win for Coronado. I look forward to having this again. (Overall - 4.00)

Clear light gold with sea foam head. Very bubbly. Has a classic salty, yeasty pilsner scent. Taste is similar: a salty sourdough flavor. A nice, slightly above average bitterness to the finish. Overall, a well put together pilsner.

Aroma is German lager yeast/malts and a dryish hint. The flavor is light citrus, fruit, German malts/yeast and a mix of dry and earthy in the finish.

Pours a finger and a half of head on a clear straw body.
The aroma is dry hay and lemon.
The taste has a sharp and quick lemon bitterness, then mellows to grapefruit bitter.
The texture is crisp and fizzy.
Enjoyable.

On tap at Whole Foods in Venice, CA.

Pours a hazy light gold with a foamy off-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of grain, earth, grass, and hay aromas. Taste is much the same with cracker, grass, hay, and slight fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that is tasty, light, and super easy to drink.

Serving type: on tap.
