A nice, balanced IPA. In drinking it, my first thought was "Yup, tastes like an IPA!" Not memorable or anything spectacular flavor-wise, but it's a solid beer I'd be happy to drink.

From an undated bomber. Pours a golden color with a finger of white fluffy head. Almost no smell, a faint hint of citrus. Medium carbonation, taste has apricot flavors followed by hop bitterness. I like the apricot flavor, it's reminiscent of Emperor Norton by Almanac which is brewed with apricot.

Slightly hazy orange body, orange-tinged white soapy head. Smell is bitter mint, pine sap, orange rind, and a bit of malt that mildly counters the bitterness. Flavor leans more towards the fruit with predominantly orange skin and grapefruit and the cooling mint as an undertone. None of the juicy delicious sweet fruits (apricot and mango) the bottle promised. Barley husk on the late palate, giving it an unpleasant grainy note, but at least it finishes with more piney hop notes. Body is medium, with *heh* awakening carbonation.
This will be some people's cup of tea, but not mine. Too much pine, too little tropical fruits, and to really knock it down a bad malt flavor that I consider a flaw appeared towards the end. The bitterness was quenching, but the actual flavor was a letdown.

Coronado Brewing Company "Islander IPA"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, no apparent freshness dating
$1.99 @ Giant, Upper Darby, PA

Appearance: Clear golden body beneath a frothy-then-creamy off-white head that holds quite well and leaves very good lacing behind.

Aroma: Hoppy: resin, citrus (orange, mild grapefruit), pine, grass.

Flavor: Hoppy as in the aroma with the addition of some pineapple and apricot, nicely threaded through a softly sweetish and grainy golden malt base. There's a synergy to its components, and it seems perfectly balanced. In drinking it you won't forget that it's an IPA - it's solidly bitter, and a touch spicy with alcohol in the finish, but you may drink it as if it were a pale ale as it's also quite soft and supple upfront with malt followed by fruitiness and then bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate carbonation that leaves it quite smooth once warmed a bit.

Overall: An impressive, easy-going "tropical" IPA with a bit of bite in the finish!

Very standard but well done IPA. No crazy overwhelming hop profile but just a solid, bitter, balanced IPA. Definitely true to the west coast IPA style. Nice and I'd enjoy it again.

This is a solid West Coast IPA, though nothing special. A nice aroma of citrus, pine, and grass, but a relatively weak backbone that makes it seem a little thin at times. Definitely worth drinking again.

Appearance: on the lighter side, very sunny light orange / mandarin. like yellow orange but more on the bright gold tinge. almost completely crystal clear. Medium off white head.

Aroma: Typical orange, citrus blend, ruby red grapefruit juice scents (freshly squeezed).
I get some simple light tame malts but nothing too bready or biscuit-like or sweet for that matter.
As it warms a bit its reminiscent of those semi fancy lemon / orange hard candies.

Taste: I really do get the apricot the bottle describes. The apricot flavors are precisely a fresh apricot thats not too sweet or ripe. Then you quickly feel the tingly bitterness toward the end of the swallow. tongue gets coated with a hefty dose of sticky resinous hop oils. Finishes clean, a spirited refreshing bitterness lingers a little in a nice pleasant way. Oh, can't forget to mention the small yet noticeable honey malt presence. Interesting malt bill, tastes like a quality lager kind of. Wonder if they're using a pilsner malt.

Mouthfeel: medium minus, feels relatively thin compared to other SD IPA's of similar ABV. That being said, it works well with the beers flavors / hop profile. Unique carbonation.

Overral: solid go to. Even at 2 - 3 months after bottling it tastes crisp, refreshing and soothing. One of the better west coast IPAs in the county.

Cloudy golden orange with a big frothy white head.

Aroma: tropical fruits, papaya/mango, citrus, noticeable malt presence

Taste: soft as it hits the tongue, malt first, the fruit flavors follow, delicious. Tangerine in there as well. Slightest bitterness on the finish, its kind of soothing.

12 oz. bottle, no bottled on date present. Acquired multiple six packs of this stuff from the local beer store for under ten dollars a piece. My second beer from Coronado Brewing Company, their flagship IPA.

Poured into a Duvel tulip snifter.

A - It pours a nice golden orange IPA body, two fingers of thick fluffy off-white head with nice staying power. Body is semi-translucent, with perhaps a touch of haze. Appears actively carbonated, and leaves some okay thin bubbly lacing behind.

S - A nice traditional aroma: fresh, soapy, piney, sappy. Notes of citrus, orange, grapefruit, mango, rinds, and some honeyed / bready / caramel malts for balance. Smells fresh & appealing. A nice aroma.

T - Flavor profile follows the nose: bready / honeyed / caramel malts paired with fresh herbal, earthy, piney, floral hops. Notes of citrus, orange, & grapefruit. A good standard IPA option.

M - Smooth & creamy, with good carbonation.

Overall, an excellent new traditional go to IPA.

Poured into a tulip glass. Golden clear look, head is a couple fingers thick, uneven bubbles that doesn't dissipate too quickly. Lacing subtle.

Nose is floral but subtle as well, barely hoppy. (When the beer warmed and the head was gone the nose became much more obvious. More hoppy than fruit, a good balance).

Taste is initially hoppy with a some bitterness, and then the citrus quickly comes in. Pineapple and apricot is underneath, even mango which is all working very well together. Malt is slight, but has a definite chocolate to it. It balances the fruit so this isn't as sweet as it may sound. Not too tart, a nice change for an otherwise pretty citrus/juicy IPA. Clearly a west-coast style IPA (IBU at 75) and a very tropical one. Would be a great summer ale.

As the sip continues I get some increasing spice in the aftertaste. The bitterness slowly intrudes, continuing to make itself known in a pleasant way, but never hitting hard. It's got medium-heavy carbonation and the aftertaste is nuanced and sticky and coats the tongue. I get the final impression of hops. A great switch-up.

Not as aggressive as Stone, a great American IPA, incredibly drinkable and a new go-to for me.

Above average IPA. Look is a medium gold. Some random bits of lacing.
Aroma is a complex blend of both citrus and pine. Taste is similar but a little more malt forward. Had on draft at Applebee's.

Pours a clear, gold color. 3/4 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of earthy malt, sweet malt, hint of yeast, hint of pale malt, hint of pine, hops, hint of alcohol, and a hint of floral notes. Fits the style of an American IPA. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, slight pine, hops, hint of floral, and a hint of earthy malt. Overall, good appearance, aroma, blend, and decent body.

12 oz bottle poured into a Savor snifter.

Pours a clear bright yellow color with a half finger of foam. Aroma is hoppy, with lots of pine and tropical fruit notes in the nose.

Flavor has lots of tropical fruit - mango, citrus and finishes quite bitter. Just enough malty sweetness to keep the hops in check.

This is a good, but not great, IPA. Nice hop flavor, but the bitter finish is a bit much. Hop profile is nice, but I'd prefer more pine and citrus and less tropical fruit. I'd be happy to drink this beer again, though.

Surprisingly great bomber at 4.99 in Burlingame CA.

A: Pours a totally hazed golden amber with a white puffy head; moderate retention and streaky lacing.

S: Tropical fruit (pineapple, grapefruit and mango) with sugary, chalky malt.

T: Follows the tropical fruit flavors with piney bitterness joining; floral hoppy flavors then dominate mixed with cotton candy sugary malt alternating with peppery, piney bitterness. Delicious and complex.

F: Medium body with moderate carbonation, a bit chalky.

O: A find! must try.

This was poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a hazy golden to burnt orange color with a slim white foaminess of a head. It dissipates at a nice pace.
The smell has some citrusy notes, seems to be an odd blend between pulp and rind - somewhat, mostly hard to discern. Bitterness in said notes seems fairly tame in its aroma.
The taste was moderately sweet leaving the bitterness a bit something to be desired in this part as well. There's a slight sweet citrus aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was moderately harsh with an underscore of bitter breaking feels on my tongue, slightly weird, as the sweetness I've mentioned seems to be gone in the feel of this beer.
Overall, slightly different to me, I don't mind this one but it does seem like its kinda all over the place.

O- A solid west coast IPA, , on the dank side of things.

Smells like a homebrew pale ale. The hops approach bubblegum with just a hint of citrus. The beer is too sweet and bitterness is pretty mild. Clean, but not much of and IPA. Pass.

Poured a clear deep gold body with a half-finger bubbly white head. Overall impression of appearance is of a quite nice IPA. Scents of dank, herbal, weedy, piney hops upfront with undercurrents of tropical fruit lending supporting aromas of mango with hints of apricot with light hints of pale malt. Overall impression of aroma is of a very straight forward, but well crafted American IPA. Not the most complex or richest aroma, but quite pleasing and a good example of the West Coast aroma profile. Flavor begins with medium-high bitterness and a high level of hop flavors imparting notes of pine resin, dank, earthy, herbal hops with undertones of mango and apricot balancing these flavors. Middle opens up further mango flavors and a light touch of grapefruit rind. Finish is bitter with high hop flavors reminiscent of grapefruit rind and flesh, mingling with pine resin and light notes of mango, pale malt and warming alcohol. Aftertaste is of piney hops and grapefruit rind. Overall impression of flavor is of a very well done West Coast IPA. It has a good hop-forward flavor profile, with minimal malt getting in the way of the hops. This allows them to showcase a diverse array of flavors that is quite pleasant. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate, prickly carbonation and a sticky, resinous feel. Overall impression of mouthfeel is of a classic IPA, true to form. Overall this is a fantastic IPA, one with which I was quite surprised. It has a good aroma that does not fully betray the excellent flavor and mouthfeel. An excellent and quite affordable example of a well done West Coast IPA.

12 oz bottle. Pours golden with tall, long lasting, fluffy white head and nice lacing. Aroma is of citrusy hops, tropical fruit and biscuit malt. Body is medium and smooth. Large amount of citrusy herbal hops dominate the palate. Biscuit malt and ripe fruit are in background. Finish is long, dry, and very bitter. Good brew for hopheads.

On tap; poured into a pint glass.
Apperance - clear golden straw color with medium, eggshell head that drops quickly to a film; leaves a little lacing on the glass.
Smell - mild citrus and grassy hop notes, with some cracker malt. Just a hint of pineapple and perhaps mango.
Taste - picking up caramel malt flavors early, followed by some earthy hop notes. Malt to hop flavor ratio leans more towards malt.
Feel - lighter side of medium-bodied, clean-finish. Decent carbonation; a touch of bitterness, but fought off my pale malts.
O: decent offering, but with so many IPA's to choose from, I doubt I would ever give this another look.

Descent ipa a little funky earthiness in there I pick up a bit a of stone fruit and typical pine. A little to basic for me with all the hop bombs out their. An ipa realying on centennial, chinook, and cascade is hard to stand out these days.

The Islander pours a clear straw color with good 3-4 finger head. Tight lacing and head dissipates pretty quickly. The smell is of apricots and pineapple. It has a good mild sweetness following by a good amount of bitterness which is right on track and not too overwhelming. The Islander has a soft mouthfeel and leaves the right about of ibu's on the tongue and back of the throat. I thought it was a great session ipa. I would buy again.

Appearance: Bright gold with a great head of foam, good lacing, and an explosion of carbonation.

Smell: Tropical fruits, pine, and malt.

Taste: Citrus, tropical fruits, and a hint of pine.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Moderate hop bitterness in the finish.

The Verdict: I like it. Good flavor without being overpowering and just enough malts to give a passing nod to the concept of balanced. Not great, but a good solid IPA.
