Served on-tap at the Blind Lady Ale House in San Diego, the beer was served in a Weisse vase, and this bad boy poured just like a stout. Jet black with a creamy chocolate colored head. Nose of heavy and wet hops with roasted malt. Super hoppy forward flavors, with peppery highlights and a bitter coffee backbone that lasts through the aftertaste. Robust and a little dry on the body, with a bitter finish. Very tasty!

April 28th 2011-

Dark black with tan head. Very roasty on smell really didn't get any hops. Taste was much more hop forward, surprised me after smell. Overall the hoppiness and roasted characters collide a little too much but its still a good beer.

Poured the blackest of black with one finger tan head.

Smelt of slightly of fresh fruity hops.

The taste was more roasty than what I expected. At first you get chocolate and roasted coffee then on the back you get the standard bitterness of an IPA. I would think it would be the other way around but it surly is not.

A pretty good beer and I love the Cascadian style but this is probably on the lower end of the ones Ive tried. I would order it again however because it does have pretty good drink-ability.

This is a really nice Black IPA. This hops are undeniable in the aroma, it's got some little hints on burnt malts on the nose but not much. The color is very black. The head is very durable and thick for the entire course of time from start to finish. This is super citrusy up front and then smacks you with a very dry aftertaste that begs for another sip!

On tap at O'Brien's, San Diego.

Pours a solid black color with a small tan head and some lacing. Light aroma with citrus and roasted malt. Tastes of grapefruit and very deep roasted malts (with some sweetness up-front). Almost full-bodied, smooth, and with mild carbonation. Tasty and nice to drink; not bad, but probably my least favorite black IPA that I've tried.

In a mug at the brewery earlier tonite (not a fan of remote reviews but this is a new one so I made an exception). It's not really a strong ale, it's a black IPA but there is no category for that yet.

The body is dark, more black than brown, thick and topped with a dark mocha colored head. About a finger's worth on it initially which dissipates to a sploty thin film which remains throughout.

The smell is floral hops initially, a refreshing scent which perks up the nostrils, this is followed by a smoked malty sweet type tinge.

The flavor profile is very interesting. First I got the smoked malt which gave me a bacon taste which was very intense. This was followed by an indistinguishable malty flavor, kind if a sweet molasses and dark biscuit combined into one. The hops come more towards the end and are very subtle but leave you with a great balanced aftertaste which I enjoyed.

The mouthfeel is great, it's super malty so it's thick creamy and smooth as well as having a lightening sense from the hoppy aftertaste.

For sure a sipping brew, I am not 100% on the abv but I would guess between the 8 and 9 percent range.
