Pourin' at Smokin' Joe's in the Southside, this one appears a deep cola brown near black, with a frothing tan head. Roasted dark malts come through in the nose but big citric/herbal/pine hops show as well. Flavors of dark anise, dark caramelized sugars with a touch of coffee in the finish clash with the big alpha hops used. Mouthfeel is medium bodied slightly resinous with a dry bitter roasted malt and hoppy finish. Overall a nice easy to drink version of the black IPA more or less this goes down like a really hoppy porter.

Poured at the Coronado Brewery.

Looks like a porter when poured in a glass. Pours jet black with a nice 2 inch fizzy tan head that laces the glass all the way down to the last drop.

Smell - cocoa, piney, and roasted malt

Taste - tons of hops in this one. Piney citriusy goodness followed by a smokey kick and a very distinct cocoa flavor. The bitter hop character in the aftertaste is a true representation of a west coast ipa.

Overall- this is a great example of how west coast brewers do a black ipa. Tons of palate ass kicking hops.

Pours jet black with a light tan head. In the aroma, orange citrus hops. In the taste, a roast of cocoa and a nice orange citrus hop. A small hop bite and a medium bodied mouthfeel, with a dry roast with a hint of hops in the aftertaste. Very nice but the mixture of chocolate and orange citrus doesn't seem to mesh well.

On-tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach

A: The pour is black as night with a finger of off-white head and nice sticky lacing on the glass.

S: Smells nice and citrusy. Great pine hop aromas with some bitter grapefruit peel. Fairly roasty with a touch of coffee aroma to it. Not really too much chocolate, but there is a little bit of it.

T: The flavor isn't quite as impressive/enjoyable. Rather heavy handed on the roasted malts with some definite malt bitterness. The hop flavors are not all that intense and there is a bit of grass and pine.

M: Medium in body with a somewhat low level of carbonation.

O: Nowhere near as hoppy (in terms of the flavor) as I would have liked.

Coronado Black Ops IPA ontap @ Fatheads

Pours a dark brown with an off white head and lacing down the glass. Aroma is full of roasted malt and some earthy hop notes. In the flavor, big on the hops, pine and orangey citrus standing out. The malt profile is somewhere between a schwarzbier and a porter, with a nice black malt/coffee presence. The hops come through more in the finish with a lingering bitterness. A nice, true to style, Black IPA. More hop focused than many, I can dig it.

Had on tap at Jamison Pour house here in Bucks co.
Pours a very dark brown with a large brown head. The head is very dense and mousse like leaving good lacing around the glass.
Carbonation unknown.

Aroma is rich roasted almost burnt malts, chocolate and esspresso.
There seems to an underlying citrusy hop aroma just lingering under the surface.

Taste is of rich roasted malts. Lots of coffee and chocoalate too. Hops are light and under achieving. The malts are overpowering.

Mouthfeel is heavy and a bit gritty too from the use of roasted malts no doubt.
Its bitter and lingers deep into the aftertaste.

I like this beer it has a definite roasted burnt malt taste but I think for this style it's alittle to much.
Black Ipa are good with a little roasted flavor but this one is borderline porter or stoudt I don't know.
But to me it's good and would have no problems drinking more.
See ya

A - Very black, tan, creamy head, slow to leave. Lace coats the entire void.

S - Cocoa, malt, tropical and citrus fruits.

T - Where is the friggin malt? Very dry, powdery cocoa, finished with citrusy bitters.

M - Not much to balance. Not much flavor at first and bittering hops follow up.

D - One was enough to try.
